Fool's Gold is a one bedroom, one bathroom cottage on Snyder Mountain 8,700 feet up. It's a sunny south facing hacienda with a deck and scenic mountain views that overlooks protected BLM land making wildlife viewing incredible.
Fool's Gold Cottage is located near the border of Jefferson and Clear Creek Counties, convenient to many outdoor activities including: rafting, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, running, mountaineering, mountain climbing, zip lining, elite athletic training, and hunting just to name a few. If you want to visit Denver, it's only a 50 minute drive. There are also plenty of trails right by the cottage.
Fool's Gold was built in the 1980s. Her sister, The Gold Mine, the home the owner's currently live in is 150 feet from Fool's Gold. The Gold Mine was built in the early 1970s and was the first house in the area. The paperwork we have on the home has President Grover Cleveland's signature on it when he signed the land over to be developed!
When Fool's Gold was built, it was basically a framed house with water, a kitchen, a bathroom with a shower pan, sink and toilet, and electricity. There was not any drywall or flooring. I used her for a while as my office until a neck injury prevented me for continuing that line of work. We have worked hard over the last ten years to get her ready for others to enjoy. We are currently remodeling The Gold Mine, our current house, who will become a prospective vacation rental the end of 2016.
The roads to Fool's Gold are paved until you reach our subdivision. There is less than one mile of dirt roads to the cottage itself. Front wheel drive cars do just fine up here and the roads are well maintained. Rear wheel drive cars, some sports cars, and many Volkswagen brand vehicles do not do very well up here.
*Because we live in Alpine conditions, please make sure that the cottage would be suitable for your stay if you have children under the age of six, are elderly, or have a physical disability.*
One dog (two dogs with approval) is allowed on the property. There is no additional fee for your pet; however, all guests with pets are required to purchase the Property Damage Protection. We do have dogs on the property and they are in a separate fenced in area and we are very respectful in terms of barking, etc.
We hope you stay with us and become a part of the Mile and a Half High Club!

Evergreen is a great place to live! It's rural enough, yet close enough to urban offerings. The property's views will not change because it is BLM land and there are many trails within a mile of the property for outdoor enthusiasts. We love it here and we will always consider Evergreen our true home. The only reason we have big city traffic jams is due to elk crossings!!
When we first bought these homes, they were basically wooden tents. We have worked hard over the last 11 years to build these home from the ground floor with lots of sweat, tears (dust in our eyes, hammers hitting the fingers, bruises everywhere) and love. We are so glad that we can share our place with you and we hope you are just as inspired to pursue your dreams as we were we saw it here.
Thank you so much for sharing your cottage with us! We definitely felt at home up here! The experience went above and beyond our expectations....or should we say the "eggsperience" went above and beyond our "eggspectations." Either way, everything was "eggcelent!" If you can't tell....we really loved the eggs. Next time, we will make sure to bring you some Wisconsin cheese! Thanks again, Jacy
Colorado Dreams, Fresh Eggs and Cold Irish Cream...only at Fool's Gold! Matt G
Eggs in the fridge, eggs in the tummy, six fresh eggs and they sure were yummy! Jared
It was relaxing and very comfortable for being surrounded by other homes in the area. The inside has a relaxing and inviting feeling that made the stay very comfortable. The little town of Evergreen was peaceful and enjoyable, a perfect place for a little getaway from the big city!
We planned a last minute vacation for our one year anniversary and to celebrate my bday right before Christmas. And this cottage was lovely! We have used vrbo/home away several times before, and this was one of our favorites! Very clean home and the pictures and description was an accurate depiction of the cottage. I was worried about wildlife being in the mountains, and right before we came I got scared of potential mountain lion encounters, especially since bringing our two dogs, but we followed the well known advice and limited their night time potty breaks to be very close to the house and it turned out just fine. We saw several deer and some elk and it was amazing. The driveway was plowed and the mountain roads were surprisingly in good condition considering all the snow and ice, but just remember to drive slow when it's icy. The views from the deck were beautiful and even out on the porch area on the lower level. Tracey's amenities were great too! Fresh eggs, nice sheets over the standard bleached hard hotel sheets, and of course better than hotel shower goods. We would definitely recommend this cottage if staying near Denver or close to ski resorts. It was a nice getaway, and secluded in the beautiful mountains, yet close enough to other houses and town so you don't feel like you're in a horror movie where no one could get to you if needed. Only took about 40 min to get to Loveland ski resort off I70, and 30 min to get to the outlet shopping mall in Lakewood, outside of Denver. Tracey was a very kind and caring host and was only a text message away if we needed something. Her kitchen is well stocked with all you need to cook, and she even has hot chocolate and fresh coffee beans! Her recommendation of sushi win was fabulous, and was only about 15 min away. When you run out of fresh eggs, I would definitely make sure you stop by the wildflower cafe for breakfast on main street. Amazing home cooked breakfast items and the pancakes were HUGE!!! A tavola was another good Italian restaurant on Main Street in evergreen. Five stars to those three restaurants and the cottage! And If you're into massages, we got a couples massage at whispering pines, and it was great! Definitely recommend this cottage to stay and if we ever vacation near Denver again, we would come back!
This is our second year staying here. We absolutely love the place, the views and the fact that everything you really need is provided by the owner Tracey including delish fresh farm eggs for breakfast! Tracey is very attentive with any questions or needs we had. The quiet, quaint lil' place is clean and inviting. Just a perfect place to decompress and enjoy. Thanks Tracey for the wonderful experience yet again this year!!!
We had a super stay with Tracey at the Fools Gold Cabin. Nice place with great view of sunset over the mountains. The fresh eggs were a nice added touch for morning breakfast. Tracey was super friendly and helpful. She even loaned me a bicycle pump to repair a flat tire. We make a trip to Colorado each summer, and now we have a place to return to in future years. Thanks :-)
Wonderful experience! Was exactly what we expected, and the view is outstanding!
Tracey is a great hostess who is there for your every need. The cottage is clean and well stocked with many kitchen and food items, including fresh eggs in the refrig when you arrive. The family lives next door with their dogs, but we did not see them (except when Tracey stopped over) or hear the dogs at all. You'll enjoy your stay in this great get away in the mountains!
This cute and cozy cottage is located in the mountains of Evergreen, Colorado, Clear Creek County- close to many outdoor activites! The land that is not developed where the cottage is located, is BLM land and the wildlife viewing includes fox, deer, elk, Prince Abert black squirrels, cougar (if you are lucky to see one), bald eagles (another lucky find), hawks, various humming birds, finches, meadowlark, lark bunting (state bird) and bear. For more information about hunting in this area, please visit the Colorado Department of Wildlife.
If you are the athletic type and are training or just a fitness enthusiast in general, then this area is for you! Just walking around the area provides beautiful walks. Looking for something more challenging? Then bike, run, walk, or hike up Witter Gulch Road towards Mount Evans or even drive to Mount Evans and ascend 17.7 miles to the top. It's the highest paved road in America and reaches to a height of 14,240 feet. At the top, you can view the Mountain Sheep and the entire Front Range.
Evergreen is one of the first cities on the way to the ski resorts as you climb I-70 and Echo Mountain Ski Resort is only six miles from the cottage! Downtown Evergreen has a lake that offers year round activities including fishing, ice skating, hockey and non-motor boating. Downtown borders the river where you can shop, dine and enjoy speaking with the all-around good folks!
Whether you are seeking to relax, test your mountain skills, and/or indulge in outdoor activities, Fool's Gold Cottage is just the right get-a-way!
