Casita Colibri is a completely self-contained and private cottage (approximately 450 sq. ft.) that accommodates two very comfortably. Recently built, it has its own private entrance, a deck overlooking the garden and a short path leading to the secluded, solar-heated pool.
The living room and bedroom have their own remote-controlled, quiet, mini-split air conditioning/heating/fan units which allow perfect and quick temperature control.
The serene bedroom has a super comfortable, king-sized bed, flat screen TV and sliding doors onto the private deck...a perfect place for that first cup of coffee in the morning.
The living room/dining/kitchenette area is comfortably furnished and equipped with everything needed to create a simple meal. Spices, condiments, coffee, tea, sugar and milk are provided as well as a fresh fruit basket upon arrival.
England, the East Coast and the Mid-West have all been home to Roger and Linda but we fell in love with Topanga when Roger was doing a lot of consulting work in Los Angeles in the mid-90s. That was when we decided this was where we wanted to live and we finally made it happen in 2002.
Linda Ilsley purchased this cottage in 2002
There is something pretty special about waking up every morning and knowing that you are exactly where you want to be. The dry Canyon smells have become so familiar...rosemary, sage and lavender combining to create the most perfect treat for the senses and feeling so close to nature just makes us happy.
The year-round sunshine, dry warmth and the way the property is just snuggled into the landscape, continues to please me each and every day and I hope it will do the same for you.
Fifteen minutes down the Canyon to the beautiful Pacific Ocean, and another 10 minutes either direction to Malibu or Santa Monica, 30 to 45 minutes to the studios...we love this location.
Topanga is a popular weekend destination for Angelenos who come to enjoy the beautiful scenery, hiking in the State Parks or myriad of other trails, mountain biking (rentals available in the Canyon) and exploring the varied shops shops and galleries. The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum also entices many to the Canyon to enjoy their terrific productions. A choice of several restaurants, from fine dining to pizza, along with two coffee shops and a good gourmet food shop, give you plenty of choices for dining in or out.
And an easy drive away will give you more shopping choices than you will have time for from high end (Melrose Place, Rodeo Drive and excellent large Valley malls) to the outlet malls.
This is Southern California and you will not be disappointed. There are fantastic beaches all along the Pacific Coast Highway beginning with Topanga Beach, right where Topanga Canyon Boulevard meets the ocean. Turn right and you will be in Malibu in 10 minutes and left will bring you to Santa Monica in 10 minutes.
Restaurants, cliff trails for hiking, beaches, whale watching, surfing and celebrity spotting...all in the same day! Santa Monica Pier and Amusement Park, Malibu Vineyards, Universal Studios, Los Angeles Zoo and Observatory in Griffith Park...all of these destinations are from 20 minutes to an hour away. Santa Barbara is a little over an hours drive and Sea World and Legoland in San Diego are two hours to the South.
My wife and I booked with Linda for a few nights before a longer trip to the UK. She made sure everything was ready for us, and even went to such lengths as to purchase snacks and things for us to munch on as we showed up, anticipating that we had had a long drive. She was easy to communicate with, non-intrusive, and very kind and thoughtful in looking over all the details, leaving out sunscreen for us at her pool and leaving us all sorts of tips about where to find things in the local area. As a result my wife and I were very relaxed, and had a great time and great sleep before our big trip. We would definitely use the casita again and would recommend it to any couple looking for a few romantic nights. :)
lovely, peaceful & quiet location in the Topango Canyon area. Home away from home feeling. The hosts made you feel like family and had all the little extras already there. They had a notebook with info about stores, restaurants, shopping and the operation of tv, a/c and wifi passcode.
This casita is hidden amidst towering trees, a stunning array of natural landscaping, and an amazing variety of native adaptive plants. The winding walk beckons you to visit the casita, and once you step through the door, you have found a glorious refuge. The interior is bright with light, yet entirely private. The kitchen is well stocked with thoughtful items and utensils, while a sweet eating area provides a spot to view the mesmerizing bounty of nature. The bedroom is sizable with a comfy king size bed, which will rock you to sleep. The bath is wonderful, with fluffy towels, baskets of shampoos, lotions, and soaps and a splendid sense of space. A whimsical bench provides a place to sit down, and it enhances the cottage effect. When you step through the sliding door off the bedroom onto the roomy deck, you find yourself thrust into an astonishing Monet-like painting, and a magical mosaic of plants provide a stained glass landscape for your viewing pleasure. A sun-spangled pool at the end of a meandering pathway completes this ravishing vision. Deck furniture provides a comfy spot to enjoy the dreamlike garden and relax in your own private retreat, as the casita is beautifully secluded from the main home. This jewel of a wild garden engulfs the visitor, and the cottage is a perfect place to relax, yet it is very near to an array of attractions including a splendid farmer’s market in Calabasas on Saturday mornings. The owners, Lin and Roger, are quintessential hosts while providing living essentials, yet still giving privacy to their guests. A whispering sense of tranquility pervades this casita and any guests will find it captivating, quiet, immaculate and entertaining. Thank you for a perfect idyll!
Wonderful casita located on beautiful grounds on a very private Topanga property, including a surprisingly large swimming pool! The casita is well appointed and very comfortable. Our hosts were wonderful and accommodated us on a late arrival and we found the kitchenette full of good snacks and drinks, very kind! It was too early in the year to really enjoy the pool, but we plan on returning later in the Summer for sure.
One of the most beautiful spots in Los Angeles, and the casita is gorgeous inside and out. I'd stay here again just for the plush towels, big, stylish bathroom, and superb king-sized bed - as comfy a bed as I've slept on. The grounds you wake to are magazine-shoot beautiful; I sat outside with my morning coffee beside a towering pepper tree, with a spectacular bougainvillea plant before me, and listened to the birds and honey bees, browsing the pepper tree blossoms. Great pool, too, and Linda and Roger are cool, smart , and funny. Roger can also tell you about every great hike in the area, and name every local plant if you have a question about one. I love the way their place is set on a hillside high up from the canyon road - just walk out the gate and a few steps up the road and you have glorious views of neighboring mountains and rock formations. It's a quick trip to the ocean, too, and then you can come back, hop in that great shower, pour a beer or a glass of wine, and catch a sunset.
This was a great location for hiking in the hills and was also close to the beach and Santa Monica. Our hosts were incredibly gracious and helpful. They shared favorite places to go and Roger even took us for an evening walk up the hill while sharing his knowledge of local flora and fauna. The casita had several helpful books about area hikes as well as local information. The kitchen was stocked with fruit and yogurt, coffee and tea. Probably you wouldn't want to cook a Thanksgiving dinner here, but it was perfect for breakfast and lunch. The bed was the most comfortable one I've slept in other than my own at home. Outside, the property has lovely grounds and a good sized pool. Too cool to swim yet, but I'm sure it would be perfect for use in the coming months.
Nestled in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, Casita Colibri offers a relaxed escape from the bustle of the City in a comfortable one bedroom, one bathroom and living room cottage. Enjoy a delicious breakfast tailored to your taste on the private deck, swim in the secluded, solar-heated pool (summer only), hike the beautiful and varied trails of the Canyon and discover a different pace in Topanga. Restaurants, coffee shops, yoga studios, galleries and only 15 minutes to the beach, this rural retreat offers quiet comfort and relaxation to those wearied by city living. A serene and beautiful get-away for two adults to enjoy the unique rhythms of life in Topanga.
