About the property

Stone-built village farm house with three bedrooms. Exclusive use of pool

The converted barn has a large reception room on the ground floor, with sitting, dining and kitchen areas. There are three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. One bedroom is a large double, one a good-sized twin, with a balcony overlooking the inner courtyard as well as views over the pool and garden, and the third is a compact single. The house is comfortably furnished in modern style. The kitchen is equipped with a gas hob, electric oven, fridge-freezer and dish-washer. There is a TV and video in the sitting area and wi-fi broadband throughout.

There are two outside areas: one is a large garden with gated pool, family dining area under a vine-covered pergola, gravel drive and garage; the other is a shaded inner courtyard. Outdoor furniture includes large teak tables with chairs and benches, teak sunloungers, deckchairs, occasional tables and parasols. There is a barbecue and washing machine in the garage. The pool is salt-regulated and available from April to October.

About Julia Stevenson

Nick and I bought this property in 1994 when our three sons were young. It is in two parts - we live in one part, and we rent out the other part, the Old Barn, when we're not there, so renters have exclusive use of the garden, courtyard and pool. We live and work in London, and try to get out to the south of France as often as we can.

Why Julia Stevenson chose La Bastide-d'Engras

We fell in love with the property because it's in a wonderful, beautiful, friendly village. The property itself is in old stone. When we bought it, the barn was still a barn, and it has developed the charm of the place enormously by being converted into a living space.

What makes this cottage unique

I think this property is great, mainly because of its outside space. In addition to the interior dining area, there are three external places where one can eat - we tend to eat breakfast by the front door, lunch in the shady inner courtyard, and then supper under the vine-covered pergola. The seating area is comfy, and the bedrooms cater for any combination of party up to five people. The pool is an essential in the summer, and keeps us cool and exercised. It's in a walled area, so easy to keep secure if you have young children. The Barn is in a wonderful location. There are great walks from the front door, and many fantastic towns and villages (such as Uzes and St Quentin la Poterie) within a very short drive. It's easy to get to the Ardeche and the Cevenne, to canoe under the Pont du Gard (something we try to do every summer holiday) to swim in the Ceze river at la Roque sur Ceze, and it takes about an hour and a quarter to get to good Mediterranean beaches.

Modern comfort at Old Barn

Well equipped and beautifully maintained conversion in quiet village: secluded, with lovely flowerbeds, deep swimming pool and shady outdoor eating area. Near bohemian ceramic scene in St Vincent la Poterie and not far from live Uzes.

La Bastide d'Engras is a tranquil village about 11km from the historic market town of Uzes and 6km from attractive St Quentin la Poterie. It is dominated by its impressive fortified Bastide, while the core of the ancient stone-built village is surrounded by vineyards, fields of sunflowers and extensive pine woods. There are many way-marked trails starting from the village and it is easy to avoid walking or cycling along main roads. There are safe open areas for children to play at both ends of the village. It's also a great centre for cultural excursions: the Roman Pont-du-Gard aqueduct is just 25 minutes away and the Papal City of Avignon can be reached in 45 minutes. In a little over an hour you can: visit the asylum where Van Goch produced some of his finest paintings; walk out on to the sand of a Roman arena; or sample the fine wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. For relaxation, you can soak up the sun on a sandy Mediterranean beach or take a kayak down one of the many local rivers.

Other Activities: Kayaking, rock-climbing
