Cute As The Dickins perfectly describes our lakefront cottage; the original Dickinson lake home. This lovingly restored, clean and fresh family cottage home, features an expansive green lawn to the lake, plenty of land and water toys, and a retro 1950's cottage theme with all of the modern conveniences we have come to desire.

Knotty pine walls exude warmth and comfort. Enjoy a lakeside large bedroom with king bed and bunk bed, reclining leather rocking chair and TV, full bath just off bedroom hallway/fun retro mint green tile and fixtures plus one smaller bedroom suite with queen bed and full bath. And a third option is the queen sleeper sofa in the living room alcove. 32" flat screen, Comcast Cable with WIFI.

Fun decor throughout. The retro 50's kitchen is complete with original turquoise metal kitchen cabinets, 50's chrome dinette set, Kit Kat Klock and original boomerang Formica counter top with chrome edge trim. Find a fondue set, Revere-Ware pan set, Corelle dishes, and pink handled flatware...all of the fifties fun with modern convenience. The large kitchen features a washer & dryer as well as an eat in breakfast area, full size refrigerator/freezer, electric range, dishwasher, microwave, 1 high chair.

The large L shaped living room features a game/dining table that seats 4 / leaf avail. if needed. 2 Large picture windows overlooking the lake, plus a full glass pane door, allow for a panoramic view of the lake and all that is going on, from fishing, sailing, paddle boarding, skiing, peddle boating, kayaking, canoeing, to the swans who swim by and occasionally come ashore. The warm clear waters and sandy bottom of the lake make it such an enjoyable experience.

Outside you'll find two porches, one covered, one open, furnished to enjoy coffee sunrise or dessert and wine sunsets; outdoor living at it's finest. Last year we added a nice new concrete patio to the lakeside yard, making grilling and picnics a pure joy! Also new last year is a sidewalk from the driveway to the cottage. Each year we make a few more improvements.

For those who like to fish, cast your line from our private dock, drop your worm between the rocks along the shoreline and expect to catch bluegill, perch, crappie or maybe even a pike, although trolling is really best for pike. Maybe it's just a sit in the sun you love...we offer that too. You are welcome to bring your own boat with the public boat launch just down the street a ways. Nice private drive for walks, stroller rides, or biking. Bring your bikes along. Enjoy the basketball hoop and court and wooden swing set/playhouse for children, paddle boat and 2 kayaks. Fire pit and gas grill, picnic tables and lawn chairs.

2 large tv's with Comcast cable as well as wireless internet services are provided. Sheets and towels, blankets, pillows and bedspreads are furnished, as well as a completely set up kitchen. No smoking, no pets allowed. Year round rental.

The location can't be beat. We are 1 mile from downtown Fennville with several restaurants, a large grocery store, drug store, hardware and lots of entertainment throughout the year. We are only a 5 mile drive to Lake Michigan if it's the Big Lake you'd like to explore...but of course much chillier waters come with this as well. You will enjoy how quickly Hutchins Lake warms up in the summer. We are approx. 10 min from Saugatuck Douglas, 15 minutes from South Haven.

So much to do in this beautiful coastal area from fruit picking, wine and hard cider tasting, trails for hiking and biking, galleries galore and quaint lake towns just a quick drive from Chicago, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Detroit. We have many visitors from Ohio, Indiana, as well as St. Louis too.

New this year is our 2nd option, The Little Dickins. This was formerly the guest house. Any of you who have stayed with us previously have wondered what will become of this cute little place, that had been my grandparents guest house but had been neglected for too many years. We spent last year completely re-doing it and it's available for over-flow guests who rent the larger cottage. Call us if you are interested in learning more.

Fennville is definitely a 4 season community, so check out the happenings in all seasons...you'll surely enjoy the colors of fall and our Annual Goose Festival/Get your Goose in Fennville Michigan! Stay with us for Homecoming at Hope College, WMU, Grand Valley, Calvin, Lake Michigan College...we're only minutes away from all.

Our Christmas celebration is small town America at it's finest. And with the snow comes cross country skiing, ice skating on the lake, ice boating, ice fishing...you name it...Fennville offers it if it's family fun you are looking for.

We're a beautiful 10 min. drive to quaint downtown Douglas and Saugatuck. Visit Glenn as well, with the Blue Star Hwy antique and artist tour route. Circle the lake to find Fenn Valley winery, Virtue Cider farm, Crane Orchards U-pick, corn maize, hayrides, cow rides:) and of course Cranes Pie Pantry Bakery for delicious meals...all made on the farm...from the farm to the table.

Speaking of farm to table...check out Salt of the Earth...another award winning restaurant, right downtown in Fennville, with a wonderful evening menu...be sure you try the brussel spouts and hanger steak!

Many enjoy the Blue Goose diner for breakfast...and a favorite for decades has been the What Not Inn at the corner of Blue Star and M-89, ...fun music Sunday and Monday evenings while you dine on a casual menu and the best coconut cake on the planet! Great pizza from the Glenn Store, Hop'N and lots of great spots in Saugatuck/Douglas as well.

Those are just a 'few' of the fun spots you will discover in this area...unique for it's art and country flair. But all you really need for a fun and relaxing vacation can be found right at the cottage. Two kayaks, 1 row boat, 1 paddle boat for your use. A gas grill, outdoor seating areas, a great and always used fire pit and a playhouse, swing, slide for the kids...plus your own private dock!

We hope to be your hosts for your next vacation!

Bob and Kym

As you can see...we're high on this area!

About Kym Zumbrink

I was born in Fennville, and we came back to live here after our marriage and a short 2 years in Troy Michigan where we started our careers after college. The family hardware lured us back, and we settled and raised our family here in Fennville.

I grew up just down the street from Cute As The Dickins/my grandparents home. It has been a true labor of love to restore the home and keep it in our family, as it has always been, since the 1930's

Kym Zumbrink purchased this house in 2013

Why Kym Zumbrink chose Western Michigan

The location of our home cannot be beat. It's the best spot on Hutchins Lake in our opinion...having owned property on the lake and grown up here. Enjoy 75 ft of pristine, natural lake frontage, and beautiful sunsets from the shaded yard of this property. The home is much larger than it appears from the outside.

This location is central to all West Michigan has to offer, a quick ride to Holland, Saugatuck, Glenn and South Haven, and a quiet retreat away from it all.

You like Lake Michigan too? No problem...great beaches within 5-6 miles from the cottage... Hutchins Lake is a VERY clean lake, and it warms up so nicely...you will love this beautiful find. Nice big yard for all kinds of activities and a play house, slide and swings for kids plus basketball court.

What makes this house unique

Location Location Location! Enjoy the quiet of this private lakefront neighborhood and the closeness to all of the vacation activities you can think of in West Michigan. We're right on the lake...not across the road, or down a hill...just a nice easy walk across the beautiful yard to the lakes edge making it easy and safe for families. The lake is shallow along our 75 ft of frontage, safe for children to wade and swim...with it becoming gradually deeper. We've added a play set for children, 2 kayaks, paddle boat, toys, and have provided all of the amenities to make your vacation relaxing and care-free.

We think Fennville is West Michigan's best kept secret...with it's quaint downtown, and well known restaurants and winery. New this year is Virtue Hard Cider production farm near the Fenn Valley winery. The Beervangelist also calls Fennville home...learn all about these interesting people and places during your stay. Cranes Pie Pantry Cider Mill and U-Pick is just around the corner. Or how about a 400 acre organic blueberry farm for your picking pleasure (Pleasant Hill Farms)...or buy their frozen/shippable berries already picked and boxed. Our fantastic mix of restaurants attract visitors from many miles away / so be sure to try them all!

Many antique stores and art galleries plus very unique lakeshore towns are located within minutes from our home. Some of the finest Lake Michigan beaches are a quick car ride from Hutchins Lake. We think you'll like Hutchins Lake enough you will want to spend most of your time enjoying this recreational hot spot.

The local music and art scene can't be beat...from Free Tuesday in the Park concerts to fun and lively bands in the local restaurants...right here in Fennville (10 min. from Saugatuck and Douglas...

Come and enjoy the flavor our this unique and hidden jewel.

Cute as the Dickens

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this adorable cottage. It is on an amazing lot. We enjoyed sitting on the patio watching the lake during the day, and sitting by the fire pit at night. The kids were constantly out in the kayaks and paddle boat that were provided. They paddled all over that lake fishing. (catch & release, of course) None of us were ready to come home.

We had a fun, relaxing week at this charming cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Three generations spent a week here and loved every minute. Having spent many summers in South Haven it was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the warmth of Hutchins lake. The kids (ages 15, 14, 8 & 6) enjoyed the kayaks and paddle boat as well as swimming and fishing in the lake. Lots of books were read and card games played. We took a trip to South Haven and Saugatuck but mostly stayed close to the cottage, enjoying the town, winery and Crane's u-pick and restaurant. The cottage was immaculate and well stocked. And the extra touches of ice cream and soda were greatly appreciated! We were sad to leave!

If you love vintage or retro, you will love this place. Kym is an exceptional host, full of great suggestions and very attentive. The previous renter reported no cookie sheets so she dropped them off and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. Plus, she leaves extra touches like cookies and float ingredients, and a huge binder of suggestions/information about the area.

We loved the backyard, kayaks and paddle boat, and play set. Each evening we enjoyed a bonfire and family game night (lots of board games, puzzles, card games there for your use). Our kids were fascinated by things like a phone that dials, nut cracking set, and card shuffler :-)

Beds and furniture were comfortable. Nice and clean. Kitchen was well stocked with tools and appliances. Many of them are vintage. As I am quite the cook at home, I will let you know you will need to bring condiments, spices, oils, etc... and for pots and pans there's one large non-stick and the rest are aluminum. I am a cast iron/stainless steel/gas stove user typically so that took some adjusting.

We enjoyed so much of the area - husband went to a race at Grattan Raceway, Gilmore Car Museum (amazing and I am not a car person), Oval Beach, Silver Beach, Blueberry Picking, Saugatuck Dune Rides, Cider Tasting, the Children's Museum and movies on a rainy day. So many more things to do and areas to explore, we hope to come back! We also took our boat and enjoyed going out a couple times. There's a no wake zone on Hutchins Lake from 6pm-10am. Neighbors (and their dogs) are also super friendly and full of information about the area.

I wasn't familiar with the area, or where Fennville was in relation to the touristy spots. It IS rural, but we loved how private it was, the big backyard, and being on the water (and Hutchins Lake is much warmer than the Great Lakes). We visited lots of different areas (some 15 minutes away and some an hour away) but being a little more remote encouraged us to get out and around to LOTS of places vs. staying in Saugatuck or South Haven and just exploring where we were staying.

Our kids are 13, 11, and 18 months.

Pure Michigan... There's a reason for that smooth voice bringing you here!

Owner's Response: We LOVE receiving a review such as this! Our goal is to share our family lake cottage and provide all that we knew growing up, just up the street from our grandparents home, made summers at Cute As the Dickins on Hutchins Lake so special. We hope to host this family again sometime! Great suggestions. Thank you so much!

Nice Lake Vacation - Great Area with a Lot of Stuff to Do

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our family vacation in Fennville. The weather was not the best, but we still enjoyed the lake and the surrounding area.

Lake - The lake is fairly large. There was quite a bit of power boat activity on the nicer days. The lake itself is very shallow for the first 50-75 feet (knee deep on an adult). Ideal for our small children to play near the shore. We also took our canoe onto the lake when it wasn't too windy.

Fennville - The kids enjoyed the Children's museum and the park. We went to the park twice. The park is about 2 blocks north of the main downtown area. It is a huge wooden castle that small children will love. My 8 year old and I rode our bikes there the second time. You are on a 45 MPH road for about 5 minutes, so your child will need to be older to handle this. He was too tired to bike home, so we loaded his bike in the car, and I rode back by myself. The children's museum is $5 per person. We spent about 3 hours there one day. We bought our groceries and firewood at Wagoners. We ate at Blue Goose Cafe (typical small "local" breakfast place - very good) and Hop N for pizza (good atmosphere, but pizza wasn't good - had planned to go to Marro's in Saugatuck, but they are closed on Mondays).

Saugatuck/Douglas - Dunes rides were awesome (about $75 for 2 adults + 3 kids). Oval Beach was a blast ($10 parking fee). Saugatuck Brewing Company had good food. Beer was a little too hoppy for my tastes, but worth a visit. Nice downtown area. Good park (Butler and Main). Kilwin's chocolate. We went to a used bookstore across the street from the park (Booked for the Season) and the kids got some books. The chain ferry was not running the day we were there (closed on Monday? or too windy?)

Holland - similar to Saugatuck, but the downtown area is a little nicer. Tiptoes is a kids store with books, puzzles, clothes, toys. Harbor Wear sells Life is Good and Lake Michigan stuff. Owner/Manager was very friendly. I liked New Holland Brewing better than Saugatuck, but it is more of a standard bar than a little craft brewery place. The Outdoor Discovery Center was a good place to walk around in nature (free). The kids loved Nelis Dutch Village (I thought it was old and lame). My son ran in the Zeeland Zoom and we visited the Critter Barn in nearby Zeeland.

Grand Rapids - 45 minutes away. We enjoyed Frederick Meijer Gardens and they had a special event with firetrucks and other heavy equipment at the Downtown Market

Relaxing and fun filled weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at Cute as the Dickinson Cottage. There was plenty of room inside and out to enjoy the lake and the cottage. We decided we would eat lunches out and do bbq at night. Kym texted me early to let me know the cottage was ready for us. About an hour later we were sitting near the lake and up came Kym. Apparently she checked the gas grill before we got there and it was not working, so they brought a brand new grill to replace it. Since we brought our evening meals with us, it surely made our dinners run smoother knowing that the grill would work. Thank you Kym, for paying attention to details.

We had a great time checking out the surrounding little towns. In Saugatuck, we went on a dune ride. That was so much fun. I was originally worried that my three year old granddaughter would be scared, but SHE LOVED IT. And then we went to Holland and went to a small amusement park and petting zoo. This was a lot of fun for all!

Make sure you look through the informative book at the cottage. It has interesting facts and ideas on local attractions.

Thank you again for allowing us to enjoy your cottage.
