After retiring from public school teaching with 30 years, I wanted to do something totally different. When the Matson House became available, I purchased the property and totally renovated the inside and decided to use the house for short term vacation guests. I have two adult sons, Jason and Aaron. Jason was commissioned from United State Naval Academy with a mechanical engineer degree and is a Lieutenant in the US Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor, HI. Aaron earned a degree in physics and is finishing a masters in renewable energy engineering at Oregon Tech.
I also volunteer in juvenile court through CASA (court appointed special advocate) and work sporting events at Science Hill High School.
Frances Ponder purchased this house in 2011
Since I was a public school teacher, the Matson House fits my style. It was built as a school in 1900. Matson Institute continued for 36 years. The Matson House is located on adjoining property to my log home and additional acreage. The house is very comfortable and nicely furnished. I guarantee the house will be very clean and ready for you at check in. I am always available for directions, suggestions, or any need you might have.
The inside of the house is completely new and very clean. All new plumbing, electrical, foam insulation, high speed wireless internet, HD cable-TV, ADT monitored security and all furnishings create a comfortable home environment. The house is user friendly!
It was awesome, we stayed for four nights, we could'nt have asked for more, Francis could not have done any more for the way the interior was remodeled. We didn't want for anything. We will definitely come back! Michael from Indiana
You will not be disappointed....so much nicer than staying in a hotel & yet the same price. Frances has thought of everything...even if you forgot your dental floss! It was so wonderful having a full kitchen for cooking up meals & yet 10 mins away were downtown JC or Jonesborough. Very convenient & oh so quiet! We slept in every morning, didn't hear a single thing outside....very peaceful! And CLEAN! I had to hunt down my son's toys under things & never saw a single dust bunny!
This was just a weekend trip for my husband & I, along with our 9 year old son, to explore the area for possible relocation. Frances was a wealth of information & really helped us understand the areas around JC, along with the school districts best for our son with special needs. She really went out of her way to help in every way. She got us in touch with a realtor beforehand so we could have everything lined up. By the time we got there, we felt we were meeting an old friend. We actually met her out for lunch one day. So many personal touches, from menus, things to do, and she even came by one evening with a gift for our son. We really enjoyed our visit & highly recommend this charming old schoolhouse....though, it is definitely renovated & immaculate. And the furniture is super comfortable. Plus our son was so happy having his own room. He was in heaven!
Book it, you will not be disappointed. Thanks again Frances, hope to see you again soon. ox
By far the best rental experience we have ever had. The house is in immaculate condition, and you literally have everything you need. Francis is a wonderful host as well. Here are 2 examples:
1. We accidentally locked ourselves out of the house on our first night. I sent Frances an email at 10:30 pm, and she was there within 5 minutes to let us in. (Then apologized as if it was her fault, which it was not)
2. Frances knew we were in town to watch our daughter run at the indoor national track meet. When we arrived there was an article about the meet from the local newspaper waiting for us on the kitchen counter along with a nice personal note wishing her good luck at the meet.
She is simply an awesome lady. If we are ever in the Johnson City area again I won't even look for any other place to stay.
This was one of the cleanest rentals we have used. Very well-stocked kitchen with excellent appliances. I don't normally sleep well when I'm not at home, but the bed was so comfortable I slept like a log. Perfect for our family of five.
Very well kept and all new inside
Finding "home away from home" is difficult when you travel nearly 100 days per year. This property was exactly what myself and colleagues needed. It felt like a home while away on business. Owner was fantastic - responsive, accommodating, and meticulous. Great place that I would recommend to anyone traveling for business or pleasure!
The home is located approximately 3 miles from Johnson City Medical Center, East Tennessee State University, Mountain Home Veterans Hospital, and Jonesborough. Numerous chain and locally owned restaurants are within minutes. Historical Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tennessee and the home of the National Storytelling Festival. It is approximately 5 miles from Interstate 26, The Mall, and Science Hill High School/Freedom Hall complex. The home is located inside the city limits of Johnson City but has a Jonesborough mailing address and GPS location.
Views of the mountains and visiting wildlife are a plus to this country setting so close to the conveniences of Johnson City and Historical Jonesborough. Many TVA lakes provide opportunities for fishing, picnics, and boating--Watauga Lake (45 minutes), Boone Lake (10 minutes), Cherokee Lake (60 minutes) and Douglas Lake (70 minutes). Many hiking and biking trails are within minutes of this location, and the Appalachian Trail is accessible from various locations including Erwin, Tennessee, 20 minutes away. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34 mile rail-to-recreation trail starting in Abingdon, Virginia, traveling through Damascus and ending just past White Top Station at the Virginia-North Carolina border. This is a favorite hiking/biking trail about an hour's drive from Johnson City. The house is located 30 minutes from Bristol Motor Speedway, an hour from Asheville, NC, a little over an hour to Gatlinburg/Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge/Dollywood, and Knoxville, Tennessee, home of the Tennessee Vols and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
