About this property

UPDATED, FULLY-EQUIPPED, HERITAGE HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME, REDUCED APRIL RATES.

WE ARE SORRY TO REPORT THAT NEW PROVINCIAL GOVERMENT REGULATIONS DO NOT ALLOW SHORT TERM RENTAL OF THE STANLEY STREET HOUSE AFTER MAY 1, 2024 AS IT IS NOT OUR PRINCPAL RESIDENCE.

THIS MAKES LITTLE SENSE (ARG@#$%) AS WE ARE PERMANANT PART TIME RESIDENTS. THE PLACE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR LONG TERM RENTAL.

The Stanley Street House has been totally updated in keeping with it's heritage roots and the architecture of the neighborhood. This spacious home, central to all the amenities of Nelson, comfortably accommodates 4 adults and 2 kids.

Upper floor renovations include a full bathroom, 2 large bedrooms, each with queen beds, and a private nook off the 2nd bedroom perfect for sleeping 2 children on single beds. In a pinch, there is also a pull-out sofa-bed in the downstairs living room.

The main level has a nice layout for family gatherings, featuring high ceilings, a bright modern kitchen flowing into a large dining room, in turn opening into the main living room with a gas fire-place and TV. The entry hall, a full bathroom and convenient laundry nook are segregated from the living and entertaining areas on the main floor.

There is also a delightful covered outdoor patio, BBQ and vegetable garden off the kitchen. The Stanley Street House has free WI-FI, plenty of space, central gas heating and summer air conditioning, and all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems making for reliable comfort in your home-away-from-home.

Baker Street and the iconic downtown Nelson featuring street entertainment, festivals, cool shops, art outlets, lively bars, live theater, great restaurants, a bright new recreation center, and the marvelous Touchstones Museum and Art Gallery are short five-minute walk. Family parks (e.g. Gyro and Lakeside Parks) are close by.

Comfortable, relaxed, easy living in the Kootenay. Endless outdoor recreational opportunities. Epic skiing in winter; hiking, biking, renowned lakeside parks, kayaking and boating in summer.

Fabulous property
A superbly located, spacious and extremely well equipped property with great character. The house felt spacious and was very comfortable for our needs (2 adults and our adult children). We made good use of the barbecue and seated area outside. The AC inside was effective. Lots of shops and restaurants are in very easy walking distance yet the house is also in a peaceful location. We found plenty to do in and around Nelson: Pulpit Rock and flagpole hike (and plenty of other hikes), lake beaches, boat hire, zip lining, the hot springs and white-water rafting. I would highly recommend this property.

About the host

Hosted by Brian Fairbank

Host profile image
Brian Fairbank and Grace Mickelson: Brian grew up in Nelson in the 50's and 60's and studied geology and engineering at UBC. Marriage partner Grace from Hagen Sask. is a retired health education professional. We love time with family and friends, travel, hiking and biking in summer, and skiing in winter.

Why they chose this property

20 MINUTES FROM WHITEWATER (WINTER); CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING (SUMMER)

We love Nelson and particularly the residential area above iconic downtown Baker Street because of the heritage architecture, rich history, easy walk for youngsters and oldsters alike to downtown, and quick access to the great outdoors.

Renovating the original heritage house was a labour of love with local architect Chris Fairbank (brother), and master builders Chuck Beaulac, Max Fairbank, Wilson Fairbank, and Ben Decoste. Completed in 2008. Good times.

We hope guests appreciate the Stanley Street House for its comfortable surroundings, space for entertaining guests, easy walks around town, carefree living, and as a base for an amazing variety of hiking, biking, water sports, and the best skiing anywhere.

What makes this property unique

Stanley Street House is a relaxing home-away-from-home with lots of room to move and a perfect layout for entertaining. It is a nice walk to shopping, fine dining, lively bars, morning coffee, and other Nelson amenities.

The Nelson area is a recreation mecca. Some suggested WINTER ACTIVITIES:
1) Ski open powder, tree-glades or groomed family runs at Whitewater, the #1 small ski resort in North America; 20 minutes from Nelson, no lift lines, excellent food.
2) Ski Rossland's expansive Red Mountain Ski Resort, a one-hour drive to the birthplace and home ski hill to Olympic Champion, Nancy Green.
3) Relax in soothing waters of Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort; experience mysterious caves, stalagmites and hot springs.
4) X-country ski at local Cottonwood Lake track at Apex (toward Salmo).
5) Check out Baker Street, the Rec Center, Touch Stone Museum, Capital Theater

SUMMER day trip activity suggestions:
1) Easy day hike to spectacular alpine lodge in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park starting from trail-head at Gibson Lake (above Kokanee Park). Or try for Monica Meadows, Blue Grouse Basin, Idaho Lookout, Drinnen Pass (best July- October).
2) Bike along the eye-achingly beautiful West Arm of Kootenay Lake (good shoulders).
3) Trail-bike on converted rail bed from Mountain Station to remote Troop Point beach, or Apex to Mountain Station.
4) Descend exhilarating mountain-bike tracks in sacred woods southwest of Nelson.
5) Picnic at Kokanee Park's fabulous sandy beach on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.
6) Fish the awesome Main Lake for Rainbow trout and land-locked salmon from Jones Boys' Marina near Kaslo.
7) Take the longest free ferry in the world from Balfour to Crawford Bay and discover craft shops, the Kokanee Springs Golf Resort, or Riondel's orchard golf course and sheltered public beach at the north end of town.
8) Golf excellent courses in Nelson (Granite Point), Balfour and Castlegar.
