The perfect coastal California setting, nestled between the mountain and the beach -- just 2 miles from the ocean in gorgeous Topanga Canyon. Our home is a beautiful, four-story architectural gem with reclaimed frasier fir flooring throughout the house. The exterior is rustic with 270 degree mountain views, a stunning deck with outdoor dining seating for 12, an outdoor shower and a Japanese hot-tub. The interior is fully, recently renovated, with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. One bedroom has been turned into a nursery, another an office and the master bedroom has a huge, king-size built-in platform bed, an enormous soaking tub and a walk-in closet. There is a two-person rain shower on the upper level and heated floors. The living room has 20 foot sky-lighted ceiling. The kitchen is a chef's kitchen with gas stove and high-end fixtures including a u-line built-in refrigerator. There is a very comfortable Murphy bed built into the wall of the office.
There is a fully-equipped nursery on the main level with crib, baby toys, etc.
Downstairs, we've built a separate studio with queen-size bed and a half-bath and it's own private entrance and a small wine cellar.
The house is sun-lit from sunrise to sunset. A huge old oak tree shades the big back porch with gorgeous views of the Topanga State Park. Every day around 3PM the Pacific Ocean Breeze blows up the canyon and creates the perfect temperature around the house.
World-class surfing at Topanga State Beach and Surfrider beach in Malibu are only minutes away (Topanga State Beach is a 4-minute drive). There are hundreds of miles of trails accessible right outside the door in the Topanga State Park.
This is truly a gorgeous and tranquil spot from which to enjoy all that CA and LA have to offer. It is a great spot for artists. The owners are both writers (the movie Groundhog Day was written in the house). Santa Monica is a 20 minute drive. This is the perfect way to live in Los Angeles, smelling the Pacific Ocean, but with all the peace of a private retreat.
We are both east coast transplants who moved to LA 5 and 2 years ago, respectively. We love our home and find it to be the most relaxing place in the world for both of us. We often stay in nice hotels and are always happy to return home. We have an 8 month old little boy who loves the breeze, birds, trees and hikes that surround our house. We are relocating to NYC for 10 weeks for work, which is why we are renting our house.
We love living in Topanga Canyon because it is close to the city -- especially the West Side of LA (Santa Monica and Venice) and just minutes from the ocean. We can be at work meetings in minutes and then at the beach in minutes in the evenings or on the weekends. We fell in love with the area after hiking in the State Park, and we fell in love with the home as soon as we saw it. It is a unique combination of rustic mountain feel and modern renovation. The air is cool and clean and it is silent at night except for the sound of animals in the woods.
The house is wonderful, unique design with amazing views from Kitchen and decks. Fully equipped Kitchen has everything one could need. Charming and cozy for a family gathering. Heaters on the deck made for fine dining outdoors even in November. Short drive to to the beach or Topanga Canyon Park for hikes. Gathering around the living room fireplace with the view out windows above made you feel you were livng in a treehouse. Owner was extremely helpful and gracious with details about the house. We look forward to an opportunity to return.
This unique house provided us with a wonderful base for our family vacation in LA. We enjoyed the seclusion in the canyon and the proximity to beaches, as well as the other sites and features of LA. The property was pretty much as represented by description and photos, and was clean and well maintained. The owner was very helpful and responsive to resolve some minor issues. Note that parking is limited and tricky -- it's easy to scrape fenders if not careful.
The house is located on the border of Topanga State Park, where there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails that connect the whole region. You can hike to Malibu or Santa Monica or deep into the Santa Monica Mountains.
The Parker Mesa trail is a 3 minute drive from the house and is a gorgeous trail with a 360 degree view of the ocean and downtown LA. Many trails are accessible by walking right out the door of the house. The park is visible out most of the windows of the park and is the predominant view out all the back windows.
There is world-class surfing at Topanga State Beach and Surfrider beach in Malibu are only minutes away (Topanga State Beach is a 4-minute drive, and Malibu Surfrider beach is 10-15 mins). There are countless other surf, beach, ocean spots less than 15 mins from the house.
You can enjoy all the California Pacific Coast has to offer and avoid the traffic by being in Topanga.
There is a great farmer's market every Friday morning with fresh local vegetables, meat, fish, etc., and major grocery stores are accessible on the beach side of the canyon and over the mountains in the valley.
Nobu in Malibu and the Reel Inn (a classic California fish restaurant) are minutes from the house, so you can enjoy both of these spots during uncrowded times.
The Santa Monica pier -- with roller coasters, rides, great views, etc -- is about 10 minutes away. And the Venice board walk is about 15 minutes away.
There is great yoga, a great library and great exercise all a short walk from the house.
Universal Studios is about 25 minutes away, downtown Los Angeles is about 30 minutes away and Disney Land is about an hour away.
