My husband and I operate a daysail business in Rockport Harbor with Schooner Heron. We raised our 2 daughters on the water both in Maine and the Caribbean. We started a boatbuilding business in Rockport 30 years ago, and it has blossomed into the sailing business with our family. The house in Rockport was restored by us in 1994 and we have been offering it as a rental since then.
Bonnie Schmidt purchased this house in 1994
House is in a quiet wooded area of Rockport Village, just minutes from the Harbor. Historic Rockport Harbor has many charming features, including a large lobster fishinhg fleet, traditional schooners providing daysails and weeklong trips, waterfront parks for picnics, boat launch for kayaking and sandy beach for swimming.
Perhaps if I were a refugee from say, Syria, or a sweatshop worker from say, Thailand, I would consider this a cozy house. I didn't expect a luxury mansion, the photos look basic. I am however, a lifelong American with American standards which include regulated temperatures, screens, windows that operate. This is probably cozy in winter, it stores heat. We were sweating so much inside we couldn't sleep. There is one small window fan that circulates air 3 feet in front of it, but not throughout even half of the room. There is no Air Conditioning. The windows were not fully operational. We had to put a coathanger in to keep one window from opening or closing on us. We reserved the included cruise on the Schooner Heron and when we showed up the owner requested payment. I said it is included in our rent, she said "I would NEVER give away my business like that." To avoid making a scene in front of her other customers she said we could go, but her attitude was so unpleasant who could trust her to go on the ocean with her, especially the same person who calls the house a cozy and comfortable place...The towels were two bath two hand threadbare, the cheapest towesl available, and the sheets were stained and cheap, muslin, not even cotton. For the price I would expect an inhabitable property. We left two nights early and paid for hotels so that we could recharge ourselves after the miserable stay we had here. The drawers were made of cardboard, the floor had soft patches where we might have fallen through. The staircase was a broken leg waiting to happen. One or two things out of whack would have been okay, but EVERYTHING was WRONG.
50 Pleasant Street is a very pleasant cottage just a short walk down the hill to the Rockport Harbor. We loved this aspect of the cottage and enjoyed walking to the Shepherd Pie Restaurant for two delicious dinners (do not miss this restaurant if you book the cottage). The owner was most helpful getting us settled and giving us good ideas about what to do and see in this beautiful rural, peaceful Maine environment. It's a very cozy little house and we loved staying there. Hopefully we will get to return some day.
My wife and I stayed here August 2013. It was a really great choice for us and I'd recommend it to other couples or small families who want an alternative to a hotel or inn while not paying for a huge house with rooms you wouldn't ever use. The unit is simple but has all the basics you would need and is comfortable and clean. The location is fantastic for jumping off to do activities and day trips. It is very close to Rt 1 but still very quiet and peaceful. Camden is just a few minutes away for dinner, boating, and hiking Mt Battie. Rockland is also just a few minutes in the other direction which has nice calm water sea kayaking. Rockport Harbor is very beautiful, and only a short walk away. We took part in a sail on the Schooner Heron which was fantastic -- the best part of the trip.
The owners were very easy to work with and the pictures posted to VRBO are accurate.
Schooner Yacht Heron daysails from Rockport Marine Park is a definite must do on your stay in Rockport.
