THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE:

Romantic 1930’s Austrian Cottage completely Restored, with every modern luxury imaginable including a private Outdoor Caldera Spa! One of a kind in the world...

HISTORY:

My name is Rick Dyer. I will be your Host when you come and stay at this very special place known as 'The Gingerbread House'...

Come experience the enchantment of The Gingerbread House. The beautiful Ornate wood carvings you will discover throughout this home were created by John Henry Montgomery. Henry spent the final 20 years of his life making this house into a home by creating the detailed woodwork and ornate carvings on display both inside and outside The Gingerbread House.

Mr. Montgomery loved working with wood. We are told: Each day John created wonderful details, ornate corbels and detailed carvings using his small wood-shop located a short distance from the house. The 1934 Gingerbread house was his life. John painstakingly carved, salvaged and recycled all the wood and detail used in this beautiful Austrian style home. The ornate nearly ten foot (10') Wolf-Dragon (see photo) found outside the guest bedroom was his final creation for the Gingerbread house before he died. It was designed to be a bird feeder.

Property is in a heavily treed neighborhood, with Cleveland National Forest nearby. This exposure to nature has a wonderful relaxing effect.

About Rick

Rick Dyer is an inventor. Probably best known as the creator of the hit video game 'Dragon’s Lair'.

Dyer is a licensed REALTOR® and Licensed Real Estate Agent. Rick is a twenty (25) year resident in Julian, California; and considers it a great privilege to live in such a beautiful place...

I live in Julian to unwind, relieve stress and center myself. Our family fell in love with the peace and tranquility of the Mountains, the magnificent location and coziness of our house. For me, it is a magical place, and I love it as much as the first time I discovered Julian.

When I travel up the mountain from San Diego, only a 60 minute drive or so, I can physically feel the layers of stress peel off. By the time I get there I am already in a renewed and relaxed state. Most noticeable is the lack of traffic and sirens, just the quiet sounds of nature. I love the four seasons, each for their own unique character. I originally thought this was a winter resort, but actually it is popular all seasons, and especially summer with Lake Cuyamaca only nine minutes away. I am located on a private lane, away from the highways, surrounded by trees and spectacular Mountain views. I enjoy relaxing on my deck taking in the Mountains, valley, the changing cloud formations in the distance and listening to birds and the wind blowing through the pine trees.

CHRISTMAS comes to Julian every year in an old-fashioned way-like a Norman Rockwell painting which reflects small-town American life and brings the spirit of the holidays to heart. Holiday time in Julian gets closer to that dream than most spots in Southern California where you'll feel a nip in the fresh mountain air, stroll through a quaint, festive town, and maybe catch a glimpse of snow capped mountains.

The holiday season in Julian also offers an opportunity to shop at small boutiques and craft shows, without crowds or lines, for one-of-a-kind gifts. From antiques and collectibles to jewelry and home décor to old fashioned candy and treats, Julian offers a wide variety of unique treasures to discover.

You can greet Santa a couple of times during the season, indulge in a Victorian Christmas tea, sing carols with costumed holiday carolers, sip a cup of hot chocolate or spiced cider. And you can watch the annual Living Nativity scene, cuddle under a blanket while riding down Main Street in a carriage, stay in a cozy bed & breakfast that's all decked out in holiday finery, or even stroll down a quiet country lane.

You can enjoy Julian's holiday through early January.

What makes this cottage unique

Julian was founded following the Civil War, when displaced Confederate Veterans from Georgia headed West to seek their fortunes in a new, mostly unsettled land. Among these were cousins Drue Bailey and Mike Julian, who found a lush meadow between Volcan Mountain and the Cuyamacas to their liking. They were there in 1869 when cattleman Fred Coleman found the first flecks of gold in a creek. It was San Diego County's first and only gold rush.

The town was named Julian, in honor of Mike, who later was elected San Diego County Assessor. The town was never big, at the most boasting a population of about 600---more than reside within the historic district today. Rumor has it that Julian almost became San Diego's county seat.

The gold rush was short-lived, nearly over within a decade. But the pioneers stayed and began farming the rich land. While many crops were planted and animals pastured, Julian proved to be a fine place to grow apples. Apples continue to be produced in Julian. Their sweet, fresh flavor lures thousands to the mountains each fall, when visitors will find fruit stands overflowing with crisp fruit, homemade cider and other delicacies.

We had a wonderful time at the Gingerbread House in Julian! It was such a peaceful and relaxing vacation. Everything was so clean, neat and new! It felt like our home away from home - but better! I totally recommend the Gingerbread House. Booking was easy and quick to navigate - great customer service. I'm already looking to book our next vacation in Julian!

The Best Julian Rental And For Good Reasons !!!!

  • 5 of 5

My father and I wanted to stay in a quiet place for a couple of days where we could de-stress, enjoy each other's company, and experience the solitude of the mountains. This place fit the bill !

The owner, Rick, is very meticulous in the details in his rental unit. In fact, it is much more of a residence than a rental property. It comes equipped with everything you need to make your stay comfortable including a Jacuzzi and a very nice kitchen.

The place was immaculately clean. Rick's "Ambassador," Peter, was very responsive to all of our needs but never crowding us . The only negative about our stay is that we didn't reserve enough days here to fully enjoy the house and the location.

I can say that I recommend the Gingerbread house "without reservations." Well on the other hand, it better we "with reservations" that are made early because this rental is popular and for a good reason.

I am sure we will be back.

Charming cabin with unique character and lots of comforts

  • 5 of 5

This unique property is very nicely furnished with modern upgraded kitchen and bath, while still maintaining the charm and character of the original woodworking trim throughout the property. The home is super clean, with all the amenities you might want. It is conveniently located approximately 5 minutes drive from the Main Street of Julian. Everything was as advertised. We recommend it, and would stay here again if returning to Julian.

The Gingerbread House is everything you would imagine! Absolutely wonderful place to stay in Julian!

  • 5 of 5

Growing up in San Diego I have only gone up to Julian in the winter and for apple picking, but this was my first time going during the summer. My husband , myself and 4 1/2 year old daughter went during the week (which I highly recommend because no crowds!) as a getaway before our second child arrives. Maria, the property manager checked us in and she is wonderful! Very personable, explains everything in detail, gave us great suggestions and was available at all times during our stay whenever we had a question/issue. The gingerbread house is perfect! The tub was such a treat for my daughter and so was the jacuzzi it was perfect to hang out and unwind after our outings. The deck off the master bedroom is wonderful for morning coffee or evening star gazing! The first day we went to Kenner Ranch for horseback riding, and the second day we went to Green Valley Falls for a very short but beautiful walk to the creak. Julian is so close to San Diego and the Gingerbread House has everything you need for a complete and perfect stay! Highly recommend it!!

Nice stay at Gingerbread House in Julian

  • 4 of 5

Property was clean and well supplied for our weekend needs. Property is in a relatively dense residential neighborhood area, but is quieter than might be expected as many of the 'neighbors' are not year-round occupants. Located a couple of miles outside the main town of Julian. Spa is secluded and enjoyable, especially at night. This is an old property (1934) that has been upgraded to provide a more modern feel. Retained heat well inside via HVAC system. The two bedrooms are on opposite ends of the house (separated by a long kitchen). The one bathroom is a kind of Jack-and-Jill layout with entry via one of the bedrooms and via the family room, too. Rick authorized the refund of our security deposit the same day we left; unfortunately, VRBO/HomeAway did NOT credit my credit card until 3 weeks later which is a beef of mine with VRBO/HomeAway (not the property's owner). Overall, we were pleased by our stay. Thanks Rick!

Owner's Response: Hi James: Glad to hear the cottage was warm during the cold weather we were having during your stay in April. We contacted VRBO to ask why they took 3 weeks to refund your security deposit. Normally it only takes 3-5 days to post back to your account. Thank you. Best Regards, -Rick.

Wonderful Cottage in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

Our little family spent the Memorial Day Weekend here, and were thoroughly impressed with the cottage. There were free dvds for the kids, a wonderful interior with all the creature comforts of a modern home, combined with old world quaint charm. The hot tub was clean, and the property is well located just 5 min from Julian town. Maria took great care to make sure we know how everything worked, and we enjoyed the little treats left for us to indulge in - a nice extra touch. The ball and claw bath was wonderful too!

Location

Nearest Airport
60 Miles
San Diego Lindberg Field

Julian is a small mountain community in Southern California located at the intersection of California highways 78 and 79, about 50 miles northeast of San Diego. This historic gold-mining town is nestled among oak and pine forests between the north end of the Cuyamaca Range and the south slope of Volcan Mountain.

The entire township of Julian is a Designated Historical District. Its image as an early California frontier town with pioneer store fronts, historic sites and guided tours of Eagle and High Peak Mines accounts for much of its modern appeal. Tourism is Julian's largest industry, followed by cattle raising.

Julian is also unique among Southern California communities for its cold-winter climate, ideal for growing apples. All Julian apples are sold locally as apple pies, apple cider or whole fruit. In October, 10,000 apple pies a week are baked in Julian, when Southern California tourists flock here for the fall colors, cool breezes, frontier atmosphere and its famous Apple Festival.

Julian began as a California mining camp when A.E. (Fred) Coleman discovered placer gold at Coleman Creek in 1869. Drue Bailey founded Julian City in 1870, naming it after his cousin Mike Julian. Bailey and Julian were cousins and ex-confederate soldiers who had left Georgia after the Civil War for the California gold fields.

By the summer of 1872, there were 50 houses, 3 hotels, 4 stores, 2 restaurants, 1 schoolhouse and the "usual number of saloons" to service an an estimated 300 miners working in the area. Numerous hard rock mines were established in 1879 in the Julian and Banner area yielded an estimated $4 to $5 million dollars in gold ore.

Unlike other such camps, Julian survived after the mines played out because of its climate, rich soil and proximity to San Diego. Julian's first newspaper, The Julian Sentinel, began publishing in 1887. Since James Madison first brought the first apple trees to Julian in the early 1870s, Julian apples have won many blue ribbons at places like the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, the St. Louis Fair and the San Francisco World's Fair of 1915. The first Julian apple celebration was held in 1909 , but wasn't followed by another until 1949.

WEATHER / CLIMATE

Julian has four moderate but distinct seasons with average annual precipitation of 30 inches. Cool springs and falls contrast with hot days and cool nights during summer and occasional winter snowfall from December to March. Various climates, from desert to high mountains, exist within 25 miles of Julian.
