About Mary Ellen and Jerry Harwood

Jerry is a lifelong avid fisherman who spent his childhood on Lake Erie. Mary Ellen hails from the countryside in Lancaster County Pennsylvania Dutch country.

Together they love the outdoors and enjoy the Pymatuning State Parks and the vacation lakefront cabin in Espyville.

They love taking a break from full time residence in California to return to their roots in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Mary Ellen and Jerry Harwood purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Mary Ellen and Jerry Harwood chose Pennsylvania

We found this property with lake access and fishing opportunities. This was a fantastic opportunity. After getting to know the area for several years, we realized that offering vacation rentals would meet our needs to spend time here while offering the same to others.

What makes this cabin unique

The Lake House is spacious. The location is quiet as neighbors rarely visit their properties. The large long approach to the Pymatuning Lake leads directly to the water where a fishing boat awaits your arrival.

Relax on the rocking chairs after a day on the water.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was a great meeting place for our three sisters and spouses. One came north from West Virginia, one came east from Madison, and the other is local ti the area.

Although wee were all together only two days, the ability to cook meals and visit made it a very worthwhile and enjoyable time together. We found the cabin cozy and comfortable.

Fishing trip

  • 5 of 5

A fishing cabin at Pymatuning is the next best thing to home. My friends and I were surprised to see how clean and well stocked and organized it was. It had everything you could think of from cooking gadgets, utensils, linens, air bed, a/c, fire pit, fish cleaning station and a lot more. This is a great place to stay not just for fishing but for a getaway

Simply a great stay.

Cottage was neat as a pin, cozy and had a feeling of home. The cottage supplied you with everything that one would need when traveling away from home. It was really chilly on one of the nights that we were there. We turned on the furnace for about an hour or so and place heated right up. The guests of mine that arrived a day after my arrival loved the fact that Pymatuning Lake was right off of the rear yard of the property. Owner of property supplied us with some firewood and a case of bottled water which was nice of them to do. I really enjoyed the stay at this cottage but, next time I think I'll just take my two children. Too many late nights for this guy. It's really easy to loose time while having a lake fire and fishing. What a great time that we had!!!

Met our needs

  • 3 of 5

Located convenient to what we were doing. Not a new house by any means but was satisfied for the price. Words to future renters are simply, take all water you will consume, even for your coffee and to brush your teeth in. If you forget hit the dollor store not far from the house, and take wood if you want a fire, or buy some at the duck. I would rent again.

Owner's Response: Brenda, Thanks for the tips for future visitors. The water quality varies and it sounds like it was not good during your stay. We will check the wood supply as well. Thanks again for your visit and we hope to see you again. Mary Ellen

Relaxing Lakefront

  • 4 of 5

We spent 9 days at the Lake House in July of 2016. It was so relaxing and close enough to our family that many of them were able to come and spend time with us here. The house was clean and tidy upon our arrival and it smelled fresh as we walked through the front door. However, once we rounded the garage, which blocks the view of the lake, we were very glad we chose the Lake House to vacation in. There is about a 100 yard walk from the house to the lake and it is gently shaded by trees the entire way, the walk itself was relaxing. Once we arrived at the small beach area by the lake was just the right size for us and our family to enjoy and make memories.

Our Springer Spaniel loved jumping in the water as well as running up and down the pathway to the lake. The fishing was fun, however, we didn't catch anything, but I think that was because it was warm the entire week we were there. We loved rowing around on the lake in the row boat that was provided for us. We were not able to put a motor onto the boat because the boat was registered as Un-Powered, but we did have fun rowing around.

Thanks again for allowing us to make memories at your Lake House.

somewhat disappointing but met our needs

WHO BLOCKS THE BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE LAKE WITH A 2 CAR GARAGE!? That info is not revealed until you get the final instructions, "oh, by the way, you can't see the lake from the house as the garage blocks the view" The reason we rented the house was FOR THE VIEW!

I will admit to having OCD so with that said, here are some of my thoughts:

Living areas...not too bad, ceiling fan in back bedroom didn’t work with remote and all the beds could use new mattresses and bedding...The bathrooms are decent...tubs are a little squishy...counter tops are painted...We don't go on vacation to watch TV but every once in a while wanted a weather report, the TV's are very old and trying to figure out the DirectTV was not easy...Internet access would be a plus...

The kitchen, however, is a different story...it is pretty much in need of a makeover...

As I mentioned before, I am an extremely OCD person especially when it comes to kitchens…the frig had to be totally scrubbed of all stuck on "whatever" that was dried on all over and under the drawer before I could even consider putting any kind of food in it...it would also help the flow of the kitchen if the frig door opened from the other side...cabinets are warped and the drawers don't open easily...counter tops also are painted surfaces and stain quite easily...Appliances worked great!

We were a little disappointed there were only window air conditioners but the week we were there was very hot and they cooled the house sufficiently, however, they could fit the windows a little better as there are LARGE gaps for any bugs, etc to enter...

*gas grill didn’t work

*dog dish out by the gas grill filled with stagnant water

*bees building a nest in the trim around the back door to the porch (I was stung by one), we purchased bee/wasp spray to eliminate them

*laundry room smelled like dog

*porch/wood areas are in need of a paint job

*back porch roof/soffit is filled with nesting material

these are all things a property manager should be looking for before renters arrive...

Good comments: The Lake House is spacious, the location is quiet...We appreciate the disposable items provided…Didn’t use the smore supplies as they were opened…the thought is nice…

We had a nice week at the lake...while it wasn't ideal fishing weather we did catch a couple white bass and plenty of catfish! Location was perfect for what we needed and we may make it an annual trip. We feel we left it as we found it, maybe even a little better...
