Aloha. I am a kama'aina-indigenous Hawaiian, living in a tropical environment. My residence (hale) is ideally located in the heart of Hilo with lots of authentic Hawaiian artifacts and charm. My yard is lush with many tropicals, which I carefully planted. I was born and raised in Hilo, and this was my primary residence growing up so it is dear and special to me. I have lots of local knowledge and history of Hilo and its people. My grandfather was a senator and many of his senate bills that he introduced are still on the books today. I love traveling, hosting, cooking, entertaining, avid golfer, canoe paddler and hula. Hawaii has 12 months of outdoor weather. So come and enjoy my retreat. I believe staying here will be a very special experience reminiscent of old Hawaii. You will feel the mana....spiritual power.... E komo mai.....welcome.....
Kawehi Cochran purchased this house in 1938
Host was born and raised on this property. This is an authentic Hawaiian property and in a special setting. Every guest loves the experience and leaves with special memories of their visit to Hilo.
Guests will be surrounded by the Hawaiian culture. It is close to everything. The hale is equipped with everything a guest could possible want or ask for. Warmth, charm, lots of Aloha, FULL AMENITIES. Daily housekeeping in public areas and laundry service upon request. Located 29 miles to active volcano, and the National Park. Minutes away from Imiloa Center, University of Hawaii and walking distance to the downtown area.
Three miles from the Hilo Muncipal Golf Course. Whale watching in Hilo Bay. It is very peaceful and in a tropical lush setting.
Lots of attention to everything needed. Host was available but not intrusive. I loved the kitchen.
I'll come again .
We have stayed in VRBO units for several years but this is the first time I have taken the time to review one. This property is spectacular. Spacious, clean, beautifully appointed. Close to downtown HILO but virtually an oasis--this unit has EVERTHING you need--the host has touches throughout that are thoughtful luxuries for her guests. The coqui frogs are loud (but I loved the sweet sound--host has provided ear plugs if you have a problem) We did not use the AC unit because with the windows open and ceiling fan on, a delicious breeze lulls you to sleep. The house if full of Hawiian artifacts tastefully arranged. Full , cook's delight kitchen if you wish to cook in (we did because we wanted to enjoy our dinner on the wonderful outside gazebo/lanai). Plenty of space, comfortable seating. If we visit Hilo again--this is where I want to stay!
We totally enjoyed our stay at Hale Kawehi. The house was amazing. It felt like visiting a Hawaiian museum. The authentic artifacts were artistically displayed and amazing to see. The house has been featured in home shows and tours. The 2,000 sq ft home was spotless, beautiful, historical, contemporary, and included everything you would want in a home.
You felt comfortable and at ease the minute you entered the house. Kawehi Cochran was the perfect host. She baked croissants to start our visit, and went out of her way to give us suggestions of what to see and do, and provided background of the city and house. She is a strong and caring woman, with a pride in her city and heritage. She lived in the house since she was born, and thoroughly knew everything about Hilo and its history. Her grandfather was a Senator, and some of the collections displayed came from his travels.
It was more than a wonderful place to visit, but an experience in itself.
I would have to agree with many of the other reviews, this house is an amazing place to stay. I loved everything about it, from the history that is in the house itself, to the person herself, Kawehi. You would go just to meet her, but a stay in that lovely old house, with its many visual treasures, is a rare treat in these "minimalist" days. Our stay was MUCH too short. It is hard to leave the house, so many corners are there to see, both inside and out.
I have to say, that we found the coqui frogs in the evening quite delightful. Along with the many wind chimes, they sound like tiny Tibetan flutes, and you fall asleep listening not to traffic noises, nor sirens, but to life in the tropics, in a charming old Hawaiian home.
There are many things to do in Hilo, among them dinner at Cafe Pesto, after a wonderful visit to the Lyman Gallery, for a view of another side of old Hawaii, the missionary side. Visit the many small villages along the coast line, walk in the lovely park along the bay in Hilo, watch the canoes practice in the late afternoon.
And then go home to Hale Kawehi, and enjoy this wonderful old house, imprinted with the history of Kawehi and her family, a true treasure. Thank you for sharing it, Kawehi.
If you want to experience Hawaii at its best, a stay with Kawehi Cochran is a must. It was truly first class with gardens to enjoy a meal and a drink and a very roomy house in which to relax. The house projects Hawaii as we thought it would be. You can enjoy walks into town with its parks, beaches, shops and don't forget the great farmer's market. We used the house as a base from which to travel the entire island. We can't say enough about Kawehi and her welcoming home.
Located in the downtown area, walking distance. Close to Rainbow Falls, Liliuokalani Park, Hilo Municipal Golf Course, Imiloa Astrology Center. A great launch to all tourist attractions. 30 miles to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hale Kawehi is a very special kama'aina, very open Polynesian guest house in downtown Hilo featuring many Hawaiian museum/artifacts displayed throughout the house...... there are beautiful stained glass windows and panels and Koa furniture and cabinets. The setting is very private and tropical...a very special oasis in the center of Hilo and you will be coming to a very nice and quiet neighborhood. This guest house is large, 2,000 sq.ft., on a family estate, and very private. Host lives in a separate cottage. It is walking distance to the downtown area with the bus terminal, farmer's market, restaurants and shops. The Volcano district, Akaka Falls, Botanical Gardens, Imiloa, Liliuokalani Gardens are must see places. If you want to golf, there are 3 golf courses in the area. Hilo is, indeed, the sightseeing side of the Island. So come, relax and enjoy the enchanting Hale Kawehi.
