Historic house in Key West's Old Town district, the former home of actress and fan dancer Sally Rand, this spacious, fully renovated 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath Greek revival home is the perfect Key West experience. It features lots of gingerbread trim outside and Dade County Pine inside. Located in the meadows - the quiet side of the historic district - you are less than a mile from Duval Street, close enough to walk to the tourist district when you're in the mood, but far enough away for a relaxing, private escape. The pool and gardens are fully fenced for privacy - and for dogs. The heated pool is large enough (20 feet x 10 feet) to accommodate family and friends
The home features a large, newly-furnished living room, with a 60 inch smart TV with surround sound. Two sets of French doors open onto a covered side porch with a fountain and small garden, perfect for lounging with a book, or enjoying morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. Just beyond the living room is a large cook's kitchen, fully outfitted with everything you'll need to dazzle. The kitchen features a vaulted ceiling, Dade County Pine walls, updated cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, including a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, microwave, cooktop, oven, wine cellar, dishwasher, and charming farmhouse sink overlooking the outdoor great room. A gas grill is just outside.
Outdoor living is what Key West is all about, and the outdoor great room features an 8-foot farmhouse table plus comfortable deep seating for 12, along with a built-in sound system. The vaulted ceiling is painted the typical blue of Key West porch ceilings, with 2 ceiling fans to keep the gentle breezes going. Just beyond the outdoor great room is the private, heated pool, the perfect place to soak away your cares under the palms. An audio system lets you play your favorite tunes (or listen to a ballgame) at the pool, in the outdoor great room and in the kitchen.
The three bedrooms are comfortable and spacious. Each bedroom has new mattresses and a smart TV with cable and Wi-Fi. Also, each bedroom has a private porch or balcony with seating, so there's plenty of space to spread out. The first floor master suite overlooks the pool and has a walk-in closet, a sound system and an en-suite bathroom with both an indoor shower and a fully private outdoor shower - it's a luxurious treat to shower under the palms, or the stars. The ribbed and vaulted ceiling makes the room feel like a tented oasis. Upstairs, the front bedroom features a king bed and its own covered balcony. The back bedroom has a queen bed and its own covered balcony as well. A fully renovated bath completes the second floor.
Additional amenities include high-speed internet, Netflix on all five TVs, a washer and dryer, all bedding, hair dryers, bath towels and beach towels, a half bath tucked under the stairs (we call it the 'Harry Potter' bath), a local property manager (just in case!), weekly pool service and bi-weekly landscape service. Ample parking is just outside your door. We hope you enjoy the home as much as we do.
Our journey to owning a home in Key West began with our first one week long visit. Enchanted by the mix of historical architecture and tropical lifestyle, we returned the next year for a two week visit, followed by two month visits the next two years. Now, five years after discovering Key West, we are homeowners in paradise. One of the things we like most about Key West is that it is so pet-friendly - our beloved yellow lab Rufus joins us at some of Key West's finest restaurants - at an outdoor table of course. The combination of historical urban town with a laid-back tropical vibe is what attracted us to Key West. It was love at first sight when we strolled through the Meadows. With the unique Key West mix of historical architectural styles, it's the quiet side of the Old Town Historic District - easy parking, easy walking access to everything, easy to relax and enjoy. Because we continue to work while we are here (the curse of the Internet!) we found in the Meadows the quiet we need yet when vacation calls we can easily walk to everything Key West has to offer.
Lynn Retson purchased this house in 2013
Built circa 1906, this home has all the Key West charm but has been fully renovated to include all the features we've come to expect in a luxury home. The gingerbread trim on the front façade caught our attention first thing. Inside, the spacious kitchen and master suite addition meant our family and friends could join us with plenty of room for all to be comfortable. And the fully fenced yard with pool gave us plenty of outdoor privacy and security for our pooch.
As they say, size does matter. Many of the homes that sleep 6 do so by calling an almost inaccessible loft a bedroom. This home has three proper and spacious bedrooms.
