About Marie Olsen

Our weekend retreat has not been used much since our sons have grown and moved away. It is a relaxing getaway but since we are not using it we thought others might enjoy the peace and tranquility we have enjoyed over the past decade.

Marie Olsen purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Marie Olsen chose Great Cacapon

We spent years searching for the Nut House. We wanted to be close enough to DC that we could do a day trip. We picked River Ridge because of the river access, the community spirit and the easy access to America's original spa town, Berkeley Springs.

What makes this cabin unique

The Nut House offers the ability to have multiple families stay together. Also great for a guys or gals weekend away. We provide three kayaks for at the river for the exclusive use of our guests. The community, River Ridge, welcomes all of the seasons. The first weeks of Spring bring white clouds of Service Berry blossoms, followed closely by the vibrant red buds and dogwoods. Violets, blue bells, and phlox carpet the river banks and hillsides. Summer calls for swimming and boating along the scenic Cacapon River. The River Ridge park has boat racks, a bath house, and picnic tables for outdoor fun. In the fall, the oaks, maples, and hickories steal the show with the golden Paw Paws along the river persisting until the first snows. In Winter, snow blankets the hills while curls of wood smoke and roaming flocks of wild turkey provide a memorable backdrop for holiday gatherings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lots of space, good times were had by all. We loved the secluded hot tub in the back of the house. We look forward to staying at the Nut House again.

Secluded escape with the family

  • 5 of 5

The Nut House was everything we hoped for and more. First, I cannot say enough good things about Marie. She was a wonderful host from booking until checkout. She provided all the information down to the last detail. Nothing was left unanswered. The power went out during the afternoon of our first day. I called her and she contacted the power company and got the power restored in minutes. the house was immaculate, and fully stocked! My 4 kids (ages 10, 8, 7, & 3) and I had a blast walking down to the stream and running through the woods playing hide and seek. Even though the house has wifi, TV, Netflix and apple TV, we never used it. Instead we took the opportunity to unplug from the outside world and spend some quality family time. Played board games, Uno and ended the nights with a soak in the hot tub. Our only regret is we didn't stay longer. I can't wait to book our next visit. Thank you Marie for being a lovely host!

Great place to unwind with the family. Excellent service and very clean.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with our children ages 6 through 12 for three nights. The cabin was clean and well stocked. Marie was very responsive to any questions or concerns we had and Remington, the housekeeper, was there with a smile as soon as we needed something. The kids loved the beautiful outdoors right in the back yard for hiking and we had a great time roasting marshmallows in the fire pit. The boating is only a five minute drive from the cabin with kayaks and paddle boards available. The hot tub was clean and well maintained with very clear instructions on how to use it.

A great time had by all and we would definitely consider staying here again!

Was nice quiet place

  • 4 of 5

Was what i expected, quiet, clean, private. Hot tub was very nice clean. I would warn anyone expecting to be "connected" internet is DSL. But you pretty much don't want to be online. It rained a lot filled the creek, wonderful to hear while on porch.

Great Off the Grid Retreat!

We loved our week in this nice little cabin with private access to the Cacapon River. Kayaked, swam, visited Washington D. C. and rest and repeat. This was just what we needed. Thanks, Marie, for a wonderful vacation spot!

Very relaxing setting, a lot to do, Berkeley Springs is 15 minutes away - a lot to do there as well

  • 5 of 5

Marie was a wonderful hostess.

There were very specific and helpful directions for checking in and checking out.

The house is spacious, clean, beautfullly rustic with a relaxing, woodsy & quiet outdoor setting.

The fire ring is lovely and well made, the hot tub spacious and spotless, the screened-in porch provided the adults of our group a wonderful and rustic place to visit together.

The three teenage boys loved the ping pong table. The only “down” side is slow internet service, but we saw this as a postive as boys were not attached as much to their phones and the adults enjoyed being able to let go. The internet does work well when only one or two devices are connected - including phones.

There is a stream which runs close by, the babbling sound of which added to the relaxing ambience.

Unfortunately, we could not make use of the river as we had planned due to the inordinate amount of rain the region had before and day 1 of our arrival - the river was high, too swift and muddy.

However, the house stil provided a relaxing get-away in spite of the weather and Berkeley Springs is close enough that we spent a fun day there and could easily have spent more time there.

We plan to return to “The Nut House” -and our group members are talking Fall and Summer return trips, if Marie will have us.

We look forward to enjoying to river when we return - it looks like it would be a lot of fun and beautiful when not swollen and muddy.

Berkeley Springs is an historic spa and art-filled town nestled in the West Virginia mountains only 90 minutes from the Washington/Baltimore metro area. It boasts warm mineral springs, world class dining, dozens of unique shops, full-service spas and more. Golf, hiking and swimming share the schedule with year 'round festivals, live music and theater.

Friendly people, welcoming mountains and a sense of place mark Berkeley Springs, West Virginia as a vacation getaway for all seasons and tastes.

Morgan County began its historic life as the playground of Thomas Lord Fairfax. Period letters and documents describe Fairfax's frequent visits to his spa on the edge of the wilderness. Along with many social gatherings, he soaked in the warm mineral waters of the springs and rode into the mountains. Fairfax was occasionally joined in these adventures by his friend and Virginia neighbor, George Washington. Today, Morgan County remains a favorite playground of folks along the East Coast. The area is blessed with wooded mountains and ridges, two rivers, several lakes and a wide selection of contemporary recreation activities for both individuals and families. Natural wonders abound in the area side-by-side with man-made recreation. As part of Morgan County's ecotourism, you can explore geology, birding, rare plants, hiking and the ecosystem of the Cacapon River on your own. Organized education opportunities are also available. Contact Travel Berkeley Springs for special brochures on the Cacapon River and Ecotourism in Morgan County.

GOLF The 18-hole, 72-par championship golf course at Cacapon State Park was designed by Robert Trent Jones in the mid 1960s. Meticulously maintained, it is one of the region's most popular public courses, open for year 'round play, weather permitting. Carts, driving range, picturesque putting green, pro-shop, clubhouse and challenging play which includes deer as obstacles are all part of Cacapon's appeal. Cold Run Driving Range is open Thursday through Monday in season.

WINTER SPORTS Cross country skiing is a popular sport on the mountain trails of Cacapon State Park, and along the many back roads of the county. Bring your own equipment.

HORSEBACK RIDING From Easter through Thanksgiving, mountain trail rides originate from Cacapon State Park. One of the most popular rides starts in the state park and crosses along the top of Cacapon Mountain for 10 miles to the historically and geologically prominent Cacapon Rocks. With its spectacular views of the Cacapon River Valley, the Rocks were a common destination for 18th and 19th century riders, George Washington wrote often of his daily rides there.

FITNESS & GAMES Rankin’s Fitness Center is open daily and welcomes walk ins for classes and the state-of-the-art machine room. Indoor basketball court and therapy pool. Public tennis, basketball and volleyball courts are found at Cacapon State Park and Biser Street Park in town. Paw Paw Town Park has a softball field and playground. The Morgan County Recreation Area provides five ballfields for league play. Spectators are welcome.

HUNTING & FISHING Quail Hollow Hunts, located 8 miles south of Berkeley Springs, is a 300 acre mountainside hunting preserve offering guided pheasant, quail and chukar hunts with dogs. More than 20,000 acres in two wildlife management areas provide opportunities for hunting everything from white-tailed deer to roaming flocks of wild turkey. There are both spring and fall seasons for various game. Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area also offers primitive camping and a lake. Varying settings for canoeing, fishing and boating are found on the Potomac and Cacapon rivers, on area streams and on lakes at Cacapon State Park and Sleepy Creek Wildlife Area. The Ridge Fish Hatchery breeds famous West Virginia trout used to stock local lakes. Sleepy Creek Lake has bass, sunfish, pike and crappie. There are several public access points to the rivers noted on the map. Camping and sportsman access are found along the Potomac River in Paw Paw. Hunting and fishing licenses are required of both residents and nonresidents 15 to 65 years of age. NEVER hunt on private land without permission!

WATER SPORTS are not limited to soaking in the warm mineral springs. The lake at Cacapon State Park have paddle boats to rent. You can bring power boats to the Potomac River and Sleepy Creek Lake in the wildlife management area. Canoeing, kayaking and tubing are preferred sports on the Cacapon River -- but you need to bring your own equipment. There are sand beaches and lake SWIMMING with lifeguards in season at Cacapon State Park. The public swimming pool in Berkeley Springs State Park is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
