We are a family of four with 2 teenage children. Charles is a graphic designer in a Hollywood studio creating movie posters and movie advertising campaigns. Maria designs and builds homes. Carina is 20 years old, attending college in Chicago and Jonah is 17 years old and an avid surfer and filmmaker.
Maria Reimers purchased this house in 2003
We bought this home from my husband's family. It was built by his grandmother. The home's location in the Santa Monica canyon away from the city within walking distance to the beach; is truly superb. You can leave your car in the driveway, grab a towel, may be a surfboard, and just walk the famous canyon stairs down to the beach in a few minutes. That is priceless! At least in Los Angeles.... :-)
Our home is in walking distance to Santa Monica Beach!! Everybody comments on the amazing light we have as the house faces the ocean to the West. The gentle breeze keeps a hot summer's day cool and the tranquil serenity of the home and garden are inviting and relaxing.
We, 2 families travelling from Europe with 5 children (ages 6 to 16) stayed in Maria's Santa Monica Beach house for 2 weeks this summer and had such a lovely time that we already reserved it for next year! The house is located in the very upscale and Rustic Canyon a short drive (less than 5 minutes) from the Third Street Promenade in downtown Santa Monica yet within walking distance to the beach, park, tennis courts, pool and exquisite restaurants. Our favorite is the "Hungry Cat" with great seafood! The house with four bedrooms provided plenty of space and privacy for the 9 of us. There are two outdoor garden areas to sit and lounge in the sun and the studio with table tennis kept the children occupied. Boogie boards, surfboards, bicycles and beach umbrellas were also provided. The outdoor shower was very convenient to rinse off after returning from the beach. We also visited San Diego Zoo, Disneyland, Universal Studios and the Getty Museum. Maria, the owner is very accommodating and professional. The house and garden are impeccable and tastefully furnished. We had a truly fantastic stay and are looking forward to returning next summer!
My family rented this property for 5 nights over Thanksgiving. We were three couples with a one night stay by one more couple. We were delightfully surprised by the beauty and quality and ease of living in this home. And it really is a home. Furnishings and art work are exceptional and of the highest quality without being fussy or feeling "hands off". The house is hip, charming, comfortable, accommodating, well equipped - just wonderful! We prepared most of Thanksgiving dinner in the well appointed kitchen. With the island and stools, 8 people can easily cook, chop, bake and hang out together. The dining room opens to a private teak deck with a table and umbrellas and a pretty sitting area yard. The yard is on a street but was generally quiet . The outdoor area is a perfect size and an oasis only outdone by the private meditation garden off the master bedroom. This area is totally private and lovely.
Bedrooms are wonderful with style and plenty of light. Beds are very comfortable and linens and towels are luxurious. Master bedroom shares a very large double sinked, double shower head over tub with the front bedroom. Couple in the front bedroom which faces the street was only disturbed once by a woman shouting on her cellphone - but that can happen anywhere at anytime.
The third bedroom is smaller but has it's own bathroom. This bathroom is long and narrow but quite adequate for two people to share.
It was only when a fourth couple joined us that the main bathroom had to accommodate 6 people. We're all family and it wasn't an issue since we could always use the toilet in the second bathroom.
Tons of comfortable seating in the family area and the living room. Fireplaces are gas and work to make the house so cozy.
Everything in this house has been carefully selected and placed. The design and care that went into remodeling this house is evident. Truly a delight to be guest here.
Pretty quick walk to the beach though there are steps - shouldn't be a problem for the average person.
Quick drive into Santa Monica for shopping or going to the beach. SO close to Pacific Highway.
Owners are incredibly responsive and caring.
We all felt at home and I picked up some design ideas.
This house allows you to combine the excitement of LA with the relaxation of feeling truly at home. I was in LA for work and took my 4 kids with me since they were on Spring Break. While my company was paying, we stayed in an over-the-top hotel and when I was paying, we switched to Maria's. Guess which place we loved more? Maria's. It was so nice to have a driveway and good beds and lots of space. At first we were driving to the beach but soon ditched the car to bike there. We biked to the Pier, to restaurants (bring a bike lock) to the beach. We loved the piano and the kitchen though mostly ate out. We opted for Giorgio's over Hungry Cat and probably made a mistake with that one. Anyway, the house has everything you need and uses space incredibly well. I"m scratching my head trying to think of anything negative to say here...maybe the front door lock needs a squirt of grease. Yup, that's about it. Great light, great karma...just do it!
Our gang of 7--three adults and four teens--stayed for three days and two nights. It was a calming retreat, just a short walk from the beach or a short drive (or walk or bike ride) to Ocean Avenue. We had everything we needed: a kitchen for the cooks; room inside and out for adults and kids to have their own space to hang out; 2 adult bikes; a ping pong table; a piano for our music lovers. We wished we could have stayed all week and would definitely come back for a longer stay.
This house was perfect for our one-month stay in LA with our then-5-month old. The house was clean, very spacious, great kitchen for cooking and two outdoor areas for laying out in the sunshine with our baby. Kitchen was perfectly stocked with pots/pans, plenty of clean, fresh linens. It's perfect for a family or even two families! It is within walking/jogging distance to the beach (though no ramp for strollers so we had to carry up and down the stairs) and a longer walk to Santa Monica business district. We were a very short drive from Santa Monica and Malibu, and drove the five minutes to Brentwood every day for our coffee at the Farmshop! Perfect location, though cars drive fast on Amalfi Drive so I'd be careful with any toddlers getting out past the gate. Maria, the owner, was wonderful, friendly, and very helpful with any and all questions/concerns. Her housekeeper was also amazing -- she also babysat our baby on several occasions and was extremely trustworthy! Only thing that would have been nice was a table on the patio so we can eat outside in the perfect LA weather! We had the most amazing time in LA because of the house and location!
Santa Monica Canyon is close to everything yet a very quiet, upscale residential area. We, a family of 7 spent four weeks this summer at Maria's house and simply loved it. It is very comfortable and family friendly and beautifully decorated. We walked to the beach and the restaurants nearby. The Promenade, the Santa Monica Pier and Montana Avenue are fabulous places to visit. We also went to the Getty Villa, the Getty Museum, Universal Studios and Disneyland. We are seasoned VRBO travelers and were extremely pleased with this home. We will come again.
Our house is located in the exclusive Santa Monica Canyon off of Pacific Coast Highway. Walk to beach and restaurants via the famous canyon steps in less than 5 minutes. Annenberg Beach Club with Olympic size pool, beach volleyball, yoga and Rustic Canyon Park with tennis and basketball courts and playground within walking distance. Malibu with its world renowned surfrider beach is just a 15 minute drive North. We provide surfboards and body boards!! Miles and miles of bike path along the ocean, breathtaking sunsets, endless strolls along the water and of course a MUST SEE family attraction, the SANTA MONICA PIER with entertainment, spectacular rides (rollercoaster!) and dining.
