About Sue

“All who wander are not lost….”

This historic property is owned by the “Hermanos Gillenwater, L.P.” (“Gillenwater Brothers”). As life-long Arizona residents, the 3 Gillenwater brothers (Todd, Troy & Gil - as pictured above) are adventurers at heart having explored both far and wide. Long fascinated by Jerome, they made it one of their stops in 1982 when they hiked 810-miles across the state of Arizona. The following year serendipitous circumstances led them to purchase the property known locally as the, “The Home with the Million Dollar View”.

Moving on to grander adventures across the globe, including numerous expeditions into the “Hidden Lands” of Tibet, the Gillenwater’s have always returned to Jerome as a place of sanctuary, rest, celebration and exercise. The multiple hikes on the nearby Woodchute & Mingus Mountains are some of their favorites in the State. Their home is also centrally located for both mountain and road bicycling. And the nearby “Spirit Room” saloon is one of their favorite “watering holes” after a full day of outside activity.

All 3 of the Gillenwater brothers are involved in the real estate industry in Arizona. Gil is also President of the Rancho Feliz Charitable Foundation, Inc. an organization that works on the Arizona/Mexico border.

With the Gillenwater’s keen interest in hiking, biking, Buddhism, meditation, yoga and beer, Jerome’s intriguing atmosphere and sequestered location is the perfect get-away from the travails of everyday life and work.

Sue purchased this house in 1983

Why Sue chose Arizona

In all their travels, the Gillenwater brothers have never found a place that feels quite like Jerome. Its elevated location and expansive views are reminiscent of the grandeur and beauty they encountered in the Himalayas of southeast Asia, the steppes of Mongolia, the Semien Mountains of Ethiopia and even the Andes of Bolivia. The views from their home are truly unparalleled in all of Arizona.

The house itself is two stories. The penthouse occupies the upper floor affording exquisite vistas of the valley far below and beyond. The original home was purportedly built in 1889. It was subject to a series of Jerome’s infamous fires and was rebuilt more than once. Due to its unique position at the bend in the highway, it occupies a vantage point that invites some of the most spectacular views in all of Jerome. Accordingly, it was named by the community, “The Home with the Million Dollar View”. In 2011, it was the featured home on the, “47th Annual Jerome Historic Building & Home Tour”.

What makes this house unique

Unlike crowded hotels and Bed & Breakfasts, the “The Top-of-the-Town Penthouse with Celestial Views' offers the luxury of privacy along with a full kitchen and expanded private viewing deck. Just a short walk to downtown, this property affords the best of both worlds – privacy and proximity.

The home with a one hundred mile view

  • 5 of 5

The views from the home were incredible. The living room and patio offered unobstructed views of Sedona and the valley. Not only did it offer jaw dropping views, it was a very comfortable and modern home, which is important to me when renting. There was no expense spared in the home renovations. It had very modern décor, beautiful wood floors and very clean and beautifully tiled bathrooms. The patio had enough comfortable seating for all of us. The kitchen was fully equipped. It offered everything you would need for a comfortable stay. In addition, it was within walking distance to all of the restaurants and shops. You cannot go wrong with this house!

Incredible Views, Upscale living space

  • 5 of 5

The 2nd story loft was perfect for our party. Sue gave detailed instructions. It was uniquely decorated, clean, spacious and well equipped. There was plenty of fluffy towels, toilet paper and kitchen utensils if you were so inclined to cook. We ate out--recommend The Haunted Hamburger and Grapes. Parking was challenging, the closest spots were about 1/4 mile from the house. Once you park, I wouldn't move your vehicle. You can walk to "downtown" Jerome from the house and it is easy to explore the town on foot.

The views from the balcony made up for any inconveniences. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying here, especially for a romantic weekend.

Fantastic Property. Only 1 Complaint.

  • 4 of 5

Let me start off by saying this is a gorgeous, outstanding property. The entire house has been remodeled and the design & craftsmanship is top notch. You will NOT be disappointed. From the exposed brick of the old chimney, to the beautifully tiled bathrooms, to the iron accents, you really can't ask for anything more. And to top it off, THAT VIEW!! Wow. Just amazing. I even appreciate that the window is one big piece of glass so you really get to enjoy the entire view. The downstairs has a full time tenant. He was friendly and tried his best to help us when we encountered our one issue, getting locked out.

Upon receiving our instructions for the house, I did notice that a very important note was highlighted – ****** Please keep keys with you at all times or unlock the porch doors when you go out there as they automatically lock. **** Well, after a long day of traveling, guess what we did? We went out on the balcony and as soon as the door closed behind us we realize we didn't have the keys on us and the door locked behind us. We were able to contact Sue, but were disappointed to be told that there was no backup key available and we had to call a locksmith. 1 hour and $50 later, a locksmith from Cottonwood showed up and was able to get us in.

While we were luckily able to remedy the situation, I wish we would have done things a bit different.

1: Keep one of the two keys locked in the outside lockbox. This way, if/when you do lock yourself out you can just retrieve the backup from the lockbox.

2: During your stay, don't lock door handle to the balcony door. This will prevent the chance of getting locked out. If you leave, I suggest just locking the deadbolt to the balcony door only.

3: If you do insist on locking the door handle, put a post-it note on the door reminding you to take your keys with you onto the patio.

We loved the place and almost had a perfect experience. I just wish they would remove the door handle lock from the balcony and only have a deadbolt (like the kitchen entrance door). This would eliminate the chance of people locking themselves out, which I have to believe has happened multiple times in the past.

If it were not for this one issue, I would give it 5 stars and not 4. Having said that, if I ever go stay in Jerome again, I will rent this place again without a doubt.

Absolutely Incredible

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing property in an amazing location. The "million dollar view" nickname is well earned. The property is very well maintained and extremely clean. Just about everything you need is already there. The residence includes DirecTv, Netflix and a Blu-ray player, but if you're wanting to stay inside and watch TV, you're doing it wrong anyway. They have a fully stocked kitchen with pots, pans, cookie sheets, measuring devices, etc. They're fully stocked on linens and have a hair dryer for the ladies as well. Please, please, please, be sure to heed the instructions they provide to unlock the door handles before going outside to enjoy the deck. The doors will open from the inside and automatically lock behind you, leaving you stranded on the deck in your jammies with your coffee, just like it did us. Very easily avoidable mistake! Parking is a very big challenge with this property, but as long as you don't mind walking a little bit, you'll be just fine and always find some place to park. The surroundings are breathtaking and the town is amazing. Such a wonderful collection of talent and creative minds. Even when we took a day trip to Sedona, people would ask where we were staying and when we said Jerome, they would light up like we just said Bora Bora. I would not only recommend staying in the town of Jerome, but I would highly recommend staying in this property in particular. It has all of the comforts of home with the added luxury of being situated in heaven. Enjoy your stay.

Jerome is known as: “America's Most Vertical City” and the “Largest Ghost Town in America”. Situated high on Cleopatra hill (5,200 feet), it is located 100 miles (2 hours) north of Phoenix on State Route 89A between Sedona and Prescott. Supported in its heyday by rich copper mines, it was home to more than 10,000 people in the 1920s. The mine eventually produced over $1 billion in copper, gold and silver and the boom-town became the eye of the hurricane for America's wild west. It was so wild that it earned the dubious title 'The Wickedest Town in America'.

However, as the ore deposits exhausted, the mines closed, and the population dwindled to fewer than 100 by the mid-1950s. Efforts to save the town succeeded when residents turned to tourism and retail sales. Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1967. Today Jerome is an enchanting town and a photographer's paradise, it has art galleries, saloons, wine tastings, coffee houses, restaurants, a state park, interesting museums and bountiful hiking trails in the nearby mountains. It’s easy to spend an entire day exploring the town’s winding streets, hidden alleyways, vintage architecture and the haunting “hog’s back” cemetery. The current population is just under 500.

Ideally situated for outdoor activities, Jerome is located in Arizona's Black Hills within the Prescott National Forest. The Woodchute Mountain wilderness area is 3 miles west of Jerome and the 7,726-foot high Mingus Mountain is 4 miles south of town.

In addition, the nearby Verde Canyon Railroad is a wilderness adventure not to be missed. Winding through towering canyon walls only accessible by rail, this ride follows the lush Verde River from Clarkdale to the Perkinsville Ghost Ranch and back. This riparian area is blessed with astonishing beauty.

Being centrally located, Jerome is also a perfect home base to explore northern Arizona. Drive from Jerome to Clarkdale (6 miles), Cottonwood (10 miles), Sedona (20 miles), Prescott (30 miles), Flagstaff (60 miles) and even the Grand Canyon (145 miles) and then return to Jerome to relax for the evening and dine at one of its several fine restaurants. Then just relax on the oversized deck and enjoy the awe-inspiring view that no other city in Arizona can offer.
