Elsie's House On Howard Street

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,400 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

In the heart of Ocracoke Village, just steps away from Silver Lake harbor

This beautifully renovated historic 19th century cottage is nestled among the live oaks on Ocracoke's fabled Howard Street, a quiet sandy lane in the heart of the village, just steps away from Silver Lake harbor, shops and restaurants. It was originally built from ship's timbers in 1888 on occasion of the wedding of Simon Garrish to Sarah Howard. It stayed in the family and was last occupied by Irvin Garrish, Ocracoke's first Hyde County Commissioner and ferry Captain and his wife, Elsie Ballance Garrish, the island nurse. Local islanders fondly remember them 'holding court' from the front porch swing, greeting those passing by the shady lane.

Open the front door and you will be welcomed by the airy space and beautifully reclaimed heart of pine floors. There is a cozy living room with comfortable seating and 50 inch flat screen HDTV, a spacious dining room with the original light fixture and convenient kitchen stocked with cooking and dining items.

The front bedroom has a full bed and the back bedroom has a twin bed. There is a completely new bathroom peacefully lighted by a stained glass window plus a utility room with washer and dryer provided. Upstairs of this 'jump and a half' home is a sitting room and master bedroom with king-sized bed. You will find comfort from the elements with the central heat and air. The large yard features fig trees and live oaks which you can enjoy from vintage lawn chairs or relive your childhood on the tree swing. A luxury outdoor shower will be a welcome homecoming after a day at the beach.

Experience the relaxed slow pace of Ocracoke finishing a good book, taking a walk to Springer's Point, riding the waves (or even a horse) on the beach, kayaking to Teach's Hole, biking around the village, enjoying a fine meal, or sailing into the can do it all and then come home to the warm lantern glow of Elsie's House.

About Kathy Phillips

Our first trip to Ocracoke was the year we met in 1981. We fell in love with each other and the island, never thinking we would someday own a home with the dream of someday living there. Currently working in Raleigh with 2 kids to put through college, those dreams are in the future. So for now, we look for folks who also share an appreciation of Ocracoke and would enjoy staying in an island home that truly captures times past. Our hope is that you will feel part of this unique community.

Kathy Phillips purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Kathy Phillips chose Ocracoke

We first saw this home for sale in 2008 and wondered if we could bring it back to life. It had a deep history, it's foundation built from the shipwrecked timbers of the Old Bateman...but did it have a future? After 3 years of debate and with the generous patience of two sisters who inherited this property from their parents, we made our decision and in 2011 the property became ours. With another year of renovations, the house became a home again in April of 2012. We began renting on a year round basis to an Ocracoke resident, but now we are listing our home for weekly rentals.

What makes this cottage unique

Enjoy the front porch and waving to passersby - the locals will likely tell you that is what they remember best about this house - a friendly place to visit. The friendliness continues out into the village. You can walk or bike anywhere and enjoy leaving your car parked at the house for most or all of your stay.

A sweet cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had such a nice time staying at Elsie House. It is an adorable cottage in the heart of Ocracoke but at the same time removed from the hustle and bustle of the island. My husband and I came with our seven year old son and my mother in law. The cottage was comfortable for all ages and well supplied with books, games, and a kitchen that gave us the ability to cook, dine, and relax as a family . My son had so much fun playing in the yard, swinging, chasing the resident family of ducks, and riding his bike. We enjoyed every minute of our stay.

Elsie’s is a magical place that is clearly loved by many who love authentic ambience.

  • 5 of 5

Getting a little frayed around the edges, Elsie’s continues to offer a charming, warm haven with modern amenities. The location is perfect for enjoying the village and the beach is just a bike ride away. The owners couldn’t be nicer or more accommodating. We especially enjoy the out door shower. What a treat to have privacy and the sun! See you next year Elsie.

An amazing home in Ocracoke

  • 5 of 5

We had a super time staying at Elsie's House! This home has been lovingly restored and gives guests a bit of an insider's peek at the local flavor and history of Ocracoke. From the information provided, we really enjoyed learning about the couple who built the house originally and the family members who have lived there since. The front porch is terrific- especially the swing. The home is clean and cozy inside, with a charming décor. It does have a unique, rather narrow, inset staircase leading upstairs to the master bedroom. Those of us with broader frames can easily sleep downstairs in one of the two other bedrooms. All the beds were comfortable and each of the 3 bedrooms was nicely decorated. Our daughter loved the tree swing out in the pretty side yard. The neighborhood is off the main street a bit, so this is nice. Currently a house is being redone next door which will only add to the street's charm. Some construction sounds could be heard beginning later in the morning, but they ended early in the evening. The sounds did not bother us at all, but might affect mid-day napping. We really liked beginning and ending our days on the porch. Just be sure to bring bug spray for the mosquitos that come out in the evenings. Lastly, it was very convenient to have a washer and dryer on site. All in all, ours was a very positive experience. We were blessed to be able to stay here and would totally recommend this house to anyone looking for an relaxed home to rent in Ocracoke. Maybe some day we can return....
