It's a really nice area and the little house is exactly as described in the add on VRBO; nothing less, nothing more. I want this to be a positive review but I have to say the bed is terrible; that really needs an upgrade. The kitchen and bath are worn down but we could get a hot shower and I could make my eggs in the morning so that's ok. The pool is tiny which is ok too, but the bed, argh, not good. All in all, my wife and I had a really good week.

unable to stay at property due to infestation of fleas

  • 3 of 5

It is very difficult to rate this property, as we were unable to stay there because it was infested with fleas. We learned this on the plane the day before our reservation began. Upon talking to friends who were staying at the same property, as well as Roberta, our host, we learned that the property had been treated unsuccessfully for the previous week. Roberta then offered us a five day stay at a very nice condo at La Brisa, a condo complex on the ocean across from Smathers Beach. This worked well for us because we had a rental car, but it would not have worked if we had not had a car. We enjoyed this condo very much, as it was very nice and had a gorgeous view. Roberta also agreed to let us park at the property we had originally rented, which enabled us to join our friends and walk to Key West old town destinations. On our 4th day in Key West, we learned from our friends (who remained on the property in which we were to have stayed) that despite repeated chemical treatments of the cottage, the fleas remained. We expressed our concerns to Roberta, telling her that we had heard from our friends, who had heard from the woman cleaning and treating the cottage, that the fleas were not eradicated, and we were not eager to move into a property that had been treated for so long with so many pesticides. Unfortunately, the condo we were staying in was to be occupied by renters on our 6th day in Key West. Roberta told us we had to be out by 10:00 on that day as the renters would be checking in at 1:00. Roberta said she was completely booked for the weekend, and she offered to give us back a credit for the two nights plus the cleaning fee for the week. She suggested that we find a hotel for the two nights. She said we still had the option of the cottage we had rented. (It still had fleas!) We were very disappointed that Roberta did not offer to make arrangements for our two night stay or even to offer suggestions on where to inquire. Because there was a festival in town, Parrot Head Weekend, we found it very difficult to locate a place that we could afford that had a vacancy. We finally gave up and decided to go early to our next rental in Marathon Key, which cost us two days of spending time with our friends in Key West. Our rating reflects our unplanned 5 night stay in a very nice condo but also a week of uncertainty related to where we would spend our last 2 nights and our disappointment at having to move on 2 days early from Key West.

The cottage and property were charming and convenient for dining and sightseeing in Old Town.

For future renters, be aware that if you stay in the 1 bedroom cottage, the other 2 cottages are 2 bedrooms for possible total of 10 people around a very small pool. Sound carries inside even with AC running. Pool should have a safety bar to assist getting in & out of pool. I used pool during off times so it worked. Cottage was comfortable & great location!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

From the cute and welcoming wreath on the door to the thoughtful list of places to eat and visit we felt at home. Our bungalow was private and yet near enough to others to visit with when we wanted to.

Inside there are two nice sized rooms: you enter into the combo living, dining, kitchen area that had everything we needed for our week and then you go into the bedroom that has the bathroom attached. Bedroom was lovely, windows galore and a door to a private porch that we enjoyed.

We would definitely stay here again!!
