Open year-round! Nestled between the small riverside towns of Alma and Nelson, Wisconsin, The Great River Retreat Guest House sits on the backwaters of the Mississippi. What once was a day cabin with no running water or electricity to speak of, was completely remodeled in 2013. Every detail was considered, from the hand-scraped wood floors, the Amish rough sawn pine ceiling, the natural stone marble counter tops, the real stone slate surrounding the free-standing wood stove (there to keep you cozy on a cool night), to the screened-in deck with stunning views of the calm Mississippi backwaters and the trains passing by. You’ll feel like you just escaped into paradise.
The cabin sleeps six people comfortably in it’s one bedroom and large loft area. Enjoy incredible views as the sun rises and sets, and watch as the fisherman and water skiers go back and forth during the day. You’ll also have access to the water and use of our dock so that you can fish, swim, or just relax. Experience what it’s like to stay at a truly unique place. (ask about availability of Pontoon)
If this place seems a little to tight check out VRBO Listing: 821489 as this is the Main House adjacent to the property that is also available for rent.
Jeremiah & Jessica are new to the ownership of the property as of March, 2016. Both natives of small towns in Minnesota, have always had a love for the time away on the water. Taking ownership of the previously rented 'guest home' along with the 'main house' has been a very exciting adventure after a few years of owning and managing a lake house on Lake Zumbro just north of Rochester, MN. Parents of 3 young children, we stay busy working full time (Jeremiah as an electrical supervisor and Jes as a Labor and Delivery nurse at Mayo Clinic Rochester) and managing our properties....of course, frequenting them as much as possible as well!! :)
Jeremiah and Jes Flotteud purchased this cabin in 2016
This home is a ball toss and a driveway's width away from the main home giving the added bonus of dual rentals for your larger groups but keeping the properties separate for the smaller groups who enjoy the peace and privacy of our wooded lots overlooking the railroad and the open beauty of the river. The refreshing dips in the summer water, boat cruises and many fishing adventures will keep our love for this location year after year!!
The gorgeous views and calming sounds of the train coming through are just a couple of the features we would like to extend to our guests either traveling the area or local to us looking for an escape! The amazing porches will provide you with wonderful mornings drinking coffee watching the eagles and calm, relaxing evenings enjoying the trains. Step outside for a campfire and watch the fireflies dance in the night and the stars flood the sky - you'll enjoy every minute away!!!
My wife and I stayed here for a couple nights in early October and had a great time (Very Peaceful) ! The cabin has everything you would need and the location is terrific... easy drives to Wabasha and/or Lake City.
Clean, modern, comfortable and great views of the Mississippi! We fished a lot and caught bass, yellow perch and sunnies. The kids enjoyed counting the rail cars and the porch is a great place to relax.
My mother and I stayed in your cabin for several days earlier this week and Loved it! The screened in porch was so awesome!!! I hope to return in the future with my husband and daughter. Anybody considering a stay here will not be disappointed!!
Stayed with our whole family for a wedding. Perfect location and layout for entertaining and a gathering place for everyone. Owners were great, prompt, and accommodating. Would love to visit again!
We definitely enjoyed the property. There are some good restaurants in the area and we took the pontoon 30 or so miles down to Red Wing to the Harbor View Bar, which was really fun. No luck with our fishing but we didn't put a lot of effort into it. Relaxing stay
Wonderful vacation cottage with beautiful river views from the screened-in deck. Enjoyed the gas grill, the kayaks and the fire pit both nights. The beds were comfortable. The trains going by added a fun dimension to the stay. Didn't bother our sleep at all. Fun place! We'll be back!
Stay on the backwaters of the Mississippi River and enjoy gorgeous views of the water, trains passing by, and the abundant wildlife. Take a day trip to explore the many wineries in the area and wine taste your way up and down the Great Mississippi River Road. While you're here you can hike up to Buena Vista Park and experience the stunning view from a top the bluffs of Alma, WI. Or, if you'd rather, take a nice drive along the river to soak in views of the bluffs, wildlife, and river. Another must see is the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN, featuring live eagles. If you're visiting us in the winter don't forget to bring your skis, snowboard, or snowshoes. If you like fishing, we've got that too! So again, if it's winter, pack your ice shack and warm clothes and Flotty will show you where all the fish are biting. We've also got great biking trails and roads if you are a cyclist. If you like boating, kayaking, canoeing, or just about any other water sport we've got the perfect location for you to do all of those things as well. Feel free to bring your boat and tie it up at our dock or ask us about renting the Pontoon or Jet Ski, Into golfing? Yes, we have that too! Like campfires? Perfect, we've got a great fire pit for having a fire and roasting s'mores. To experience something really unique, add Suncrest Gardens to your list. Suncrest Gardens has the best pizza in the area, live music many nights, and a nice fire to keep you warm as the evening fades away. Only catch is you have to bring your table, chairs, plates, napkins, and silverware but no worries you can borrow ours. You can also explore the many small river towns along the Mississippi, do some shopping, eating, or antiquing. Lastly, if you love deep-fried cheese curds, or if you have no idea what those are, than you must go to Pioneer (a 10-minute boat ride) and you'll have the best hand-battered white cheese curds Wisconsin (or anywhere else) has to offer. Not to mention, the Saturday night prime rib that melts in your mouth. Please also visit our website and visit our Facebook page for the latest happenings:
