This beautiful gem has been lovingly cared for by our family for 13 years—and has served as a relaxing retreat all year round. Our goal: to make you feel like it's your home away from home. It's comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated in the French country style—and is the perfect spot to relax or use as a home base for all your Berkshire activities.
It is family-friendly with child gates for the stairs—and plenty of games, toys, books, and movies for your children. No kids? These things are tucked away so you don't need to use them if you don't want! (Also, we use no pesticides on our property—and use only natural cleaning products on our home...so you can feel healthy and safe in our home.)
There are 2 bedrooms upstairs: one master with a king-size bed and one smaller bedroom with a twin bed and pull-out twin bed. There is one downstairs bathroom. An open downstairs floor plan flows from the living room (with a wood-burning stove fired up by plenty of wood we have stored for you), to the kitchen to the dining room.
There's a super comfy pull-out sofa with a queen-size bed in the living room if you need extra space for your family or friends.
Off the dining room is the beautiful screened-in porch where you can sit for hours relaxing and enjoying the breeze and sounds of the Loom Brook from the back of the house. A connected deck allows for easy grilling with the gas grill.
In the summer, our house is just minutes from Lake Garfield, where there's a lake beach perfect for kids and adults alike! A lifeguard is present during the summer months—making it perfect for swimming out to the floating docks (it will bring back camp memories!). You can also canoe and kayak on this lake. We have sand toys, beach umbrellas, and chairs ready for your use. Love to hike? The Appalachian Trail crosses our road, which is perfect for walking any time of the year. We're also situated right near the Beartown State Forest with all its trails. Love to mountain bike? We have one bike available for your use; feel free to bring up your own bikes and ride along our dirt road — or on the nearby trails.
We're also close (about 20 minutes) to blueberry picking and apple picking.
We're 40 minutes from Tanglewood, 45 minutes from Jacob's Pillow, and just 25 minutes from the town of Great Barrington with its restaurants, bars, Triplex cinema, and the historic Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.
Fall brings the beautiful splendor of the fall foliage home here; it surrounds the house and everywhere you turn. Go for walks, take in kayaking or canoeing on Lake Garfield, or just take a visit to the nearby Taft Farms for their pumpkins, fresh cider and hot donuts, and corn mazes.
Our home is just 15 minutes from Butternut Ski Resort, which is where our children have learned to ski from age 3. It's the perfect family resort and our home is close enough to put season's passes (or just one-day passes) to good use. You'll love coming home to the warmth of the wood stove and the comfort of our home. We also have snow shoes available for your use.
We are minutes from the town of Monterey, which is small but quaint. The Monterey General Store is gourmet; you can get delicious soups and sandwiches (as well as pies and treats) here, along with staples for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We are also just minutes from the Roadside Cafe, the perfect country diner for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. (There's also Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lee, and Lenox—as well as Pittsfield...which is 45 minutes away...for more delicious restaurants.)
We are about a 25-minute drive from the outlets in Lee, about 30 minutes to Stockbridge (with the quaint and historic Red Lion Inn) and Lenox with the Cranwell Resort & Spa (where you can play golf and have top-notch spa treatments), the Kripalu Yoga Center, and Tanglewood (as well as Canyon Ranch).
Pets are allowed by individual request.
Our goal: to have you fall in love with our home just as much as we love it. We want you to feel this is your Monterey home away from home!

We have raised all three of our children in this second home away from home; they've learned to love the country and all the delights of the Berkshires here. While we still come up for them to play at the lake, go hiking, enjoy the fall foliage, and ski at Butternut, we find that we use it less than we ever did (thanks to kids sports and weekend activities), why we decided to share our home with others. Our goal: to give you a chance to love the Berkshires the way we do.
While small, our home is extremely comfortable and cozy. You can sit on the couch with your feet up and feel at home. You can go out the front door and walk down the road to clear your mind. But what we love most of all is our screened-in porch, where we sit for hours reading, playing games, and eating our meals. A short or long stay in our home will refresh your batteries and invigorate you.
We just spent the weekend at this lovely house. We have been to Berkshire VRBO houses before and this one takes top billing. It is more equipped than a 5 star hotel. It is very clean, comfortable and has all the amenities one would want for a weekend getaway. And the owner is so considerate: when we arrived late on Friday night the exterior lights were on so we could find the house (it is dark in Monterey at night), and the heat was on so that when we entered it was cozy at first. The furniture is very comfortable, the kitchen has everything one could possibly need, the bed is very comfortable and the lighting is terrific. All in all, this is an incredibly comfortable house that feels like home away from home.
My family and I enjoyed a peaceful stay at this property. It was clean and very well equipped. We particularly enjoyed the comfortable seating in the lounge, the rear deck and the kitchen. We made use of the kayaks which was fun, and spotting a moose on the lake nearby was a highlight for me - a reward for getting up early I guess! Lovely area with plenty to do for everyone.
My austic son moved into a nearby specialized facility, 5 minutes away, which was convenient for the meetings and visits. My heart was broken as now there are over 1,000 miles between us. But the beauty of this home inside & out was a huge heart healer. Just the drive up the mountain road helped clear my mind. This home is close to everything the nearby towns have to offer, shopping, dining skiing. My mom and sister who live just across the border came to visit and were also impressed by its beauty. The furniture & beds were clean & oh so comfy. The view from all wndows was spectular. The owner and her asdistant were only a phone call away & very quick to respond to my needs or questions. I will visit my son often and definitely plan on staying in this home.
We arrived in the midst of a late March snow storm and had an easy time getting in before the plows came through. We were thankful for good all-weather tires. The road was cleared and sanded within hours. The owners were kind to send their house sitter by to turn on lights and get the place warm. We entered and our beagle smiled and raced around the house. We spent time napping by the fireplace, took long walks, baked a cake for a family function (the kitchen is stocked with amenities not typical for rental homes), and spent our departure day spending much more time enjoying the scenery and coffee than usual. We enjoyed every minute of our time at the Chalet.
We love spending time in this wonderful cozy enchanted home. We have three little kids and this home has everything we could ask for. We love the wood stove, screened in porch and walking the nearby Appalachian trail. The location is perfect, you aren't in a busy touristy area but if you want a taste of that you are close to Great Barington, but locally there are a couple of cozy placed to eat. The lake is great for swimming and
activities and you are right next to ski hills in the winter. We've made wonderful family memories staying here and would highly recommend it!
I stayed for a weekend and the peace and quiet was so refreshing! The house is beautiful and everything is very well maintained. I would definitely stay again and very soon! I highly recommend it!
Screened porch, beautiful hikes nearby, surrounded by state forest and acres of conservation land. We are a mile to the lovely Lake Garfield with sandy beach and delightful swimming. We are 15 minutes from Butternut Ski Resort, 25 minutes from the town of Great Barrington, and 40 minutes from Tanglewood and Kripalu Yoga Center.
