Fabulous, comfortable new home with heated pool in village of Arco da Calheta

Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday villa in Arco Da Calheta - Casa Madrinha

2 bed, 3 bath, very private, large terrace, gardens, stunning views, car port

Completed in 2008 to a very high standard, this house (mostly ground floor) was built for comfort and as much outdoor living as possible. You'll be surprised and delighted by the space and light both inside and out, and by the breathtaking views over the village to the Atlantic. The private driveway leads into a large courtyard with carport and access to the hacienda, pool and terrace area. Here you have complete privacy for sunbathing, swimming and eating, and the pool has a constant depth of 1.40 metres. The large and superbly-equipped Miele kitchen is the first room you come to, and from there an archway opens into a huge sitting/dining room with comfy sofas and armchairs, dining table, floor-to-ceiling double glazed windows, 40 inch LED TV, an open log fire and under floor heating for winter. Beyond is the study (a child can sleep here on a Z-bed) and, opposite, a guest WC/shower room. Further on is the en-suite double bedroom (ideal for anyone with mobility difficulties).

Upstairs, the master bedroom with en-suite shower room has a large balcony.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Gwych! Bendigedig! Ardderchog! Gret! Hyfryd! Da iawn! Which, being interpreted from the Welsh, is: Amazing, wonderful, excellent, great, beautiful, really very good !!

After a very stressful year for all of us, this peaceful home has been a little paradise. We came here to celebrate the year of our Ruby Weddings and we have not been disappointed. We leave with som many lovely memories. We have had a feast of delights in this perfectly situated villa, and would thoroughly recommend it.

With many thanks

Liked it so much we had to come back

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to this very well presented, comfortable property in the peaceful village of Arco da Calheta. It's south-facing, about 900 feet up, and situated towards the centre of the valley (actually the remains of an ancient volcano) so it gets sun for most of the day. It's a six or seven minute drive to Calheta beach if that's your preference. But there's really no need to go anywhere as you can just to laze in quiet seclusion by the pool. There is a good-sized covered area around the whole property so if you do get a rainy day (we had one) you can still sit outside in the dry. It's equally useful in the middle of the day to get away from the sun for a while.

In Calheta marina there are whale watching boats, fishing boats etc so no need to drive into Funchal for these. For whale-watching we would recommend Lobosonda, but if you are at all affected by sea-sickness go on their rib, not the traditional boat. When you get back from a trip, there is a choice of reasonable restaurants around the marina. If you prefer to eat back at the property there's a Pingo Doce mini-market by the marina which has a good selection of produce including quite a decent amount of gluten-free food.

You do need to hire a car to make the most of this property, but it's worth it. Just don't forget to get a parking ticket in Calheta - they employ some very diligent parking wardens!

Superb Villa

  • 5 of 5

We are so glad we chose this Villa for our first holiday to Madeira. Everything about this property is excellent. It is spacious, well equipped and very comfortable and the expansive ocean views are brilliant. The gardens and pool area are very smart and despite being in a village location we didn't feel overlooked in any way. The pool is 11x4 metres and was actually bigger than we imagined from the photos. The location worked well for us as a family, a short drive into Calheta for a decent little supermarket with long opening hours and some very good restaurants by the Marina. We also went on a dolphin watching boat trip from Calheta Marina which was enjoyed by all. Vanda was really friendly helpful and not far away if we needed any assistance (which we didn't). We would not hesitate to stay here again and can strongly recommend it as a superb holiday villa.

Where happy memories are made...

  • 5 of 5

Our first time in Madeira and we were not disappointed. The house is beautiful and matches the advert description well. The pool was used (and enjoyed!) every day by the whole family and meant that we could spend days in without having to find things to do. Calheta was the perfect destination for us and provided a good base for exploring the island. We honestly couldn't find any faults with our holiday and have brought home many happy memories of perfectly relaxing family time. The views from the villas are magnificent and many an hour was spent just taking it all in. We would thoroughly recommend Casa Madrinha and doubt that anyone could fail to be thrilled whilst staying there.

Just in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

If you have not been since now in touch with paradise, you will discover what it means!

If you already have been in touch with the paradise, just let us say, here you felt in it!

The house is wonderful. Everything is beautiful! You can look at all the details.

Everything is very well finished, beautiful material. Take the time to look at all the paintings! Look at the plates, dishes, cups, …..

Everything asks respect, but you give it generously.

And last, but not least, it was for us the discovery that Madeira is such a wonderful place!!!

The island of flowers, very good products cooked here with all the facilities.

Just how to summarise, we will come back SURE!

And it is true, we have booked for 2015!

Thanks for all the small and big things that give you a sensation of PARADISE that give you a sensation of PARADISE

Just like Home and more

  • 5 of 5

From the first time we walked through the gates we knew we had found our perfect winter retreat from the cold Canadian winter. Casa Madrinha comes with all the comforts of home and we enjoy nights by the fire and preparing meals in the well equipped kitchen. The view and the sunsets are spectacular. Having a bedroom and facilities on the main level is ideal for me and the grounds and pool area ideal for anyone with accessibility issues. Linens and towels all provided. Vanda and Joseph ensure that all is clean and maintained. The location is ideal for quick visits for groceries, restaurants and access to the highway. It is nice to be in the midst of the village and to hear the church bells and singing on special occasions. The location just more relaxed, then the hustle and bustle of Funchal where we stayed our first winter. We are very lucky to have stayed the past 2 winters and fingers crossed for a few more.

Nirvana or something close!

  • 5 of 5

Repeat visits when there is ample opportunity to try somewhere else sends the obvious message that we are more than satisfied with Casa Madrinha. It is literally a home from home and an ideal location for exploring the whole of Madeira. Thanks to the "rapida" ( motorway), Funchal and the airport are a short, easy drive away as is Porto Moniz when you you want to get there fast. What more can you want?.

Owner's Response: Hello John and Joyce. I can't remember how many visits you have made to our house but it must be about six now. It's great that you come back every year and we love the title of this review! We look forward to welcoming you again in March 2015 and yes, even March 2016 is booked (forward planners or not?) ! Thank you and best wishes, Tony and Judith

Car: necessary

A perfect holiday destination, well away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas on Madeira. Situated 250 metres above sea level and accessed by its own driveway, Casa Madrinha sits privately and with stunning views on a terrace in the pretty, rural village of Calheta, next to banana plantations and small holdings. Thanks to the new road system you can drive round the whole island in a day so the island's top attractions, including Funchal, are within easy reach. Only 5 minutes' drive brings you to Calheta with its protected beach of golden sand, a marina offering dolphin/whale watching excursions and deep sea fishing boats for charter, a hotel, supermarket, bank, art gallery and good choice of restaurants; or 15 minutes away you have the laurel, levada and waterfall wonderland of Rabaçal and the wide open expanses of the Paul da Serra - fantastic walking terrain. Car hire is necessary to enjoy all that this area has to offer and to explore this beautiful island
