Relax by the river, with mountain views and bird songs after exploring.
About Richard Deal
We love the nature and views along the Potomac and the wonderful vibe of Shepherdstown.
Richard Deal purchased this House in 2017
Why Richard Deal chose Shepherdstown
This is one of the iconic homes in Shepherdstown and river front made it a must have for us. The nature and quite around the home are fantastic.
What makes this House unique
This land goes back to Lord Fairfax. We don't know the exact date of the stone house being added but a historian and Author of "Uncommon Vernacular" has placed it around 1815. The upstairs was originally divided into 6 rooms on either side of a hallway, with access from the porch.

Incredible property. Mix of modern luxury and historic charm. Ideal location on the river. Close in town.
We loved it!!
I wish we could give more than 5 stars. The house is gorgeous! Pictures cannot do it the justice it deserves. You can feel the warmth and welcoming envelop you as soon as you walk through the door. We instantly felt at home. Everything is there for you. All you need to do is put your suitcases down and relax.
The river is absolutely beautiful. You can walk down to the river's edge, you can sit on the bank, or you can watch it from the porches of the house. Wildlife abounds. A walk along River Road will take you through the history of the Battle of Shepherdstown.
Shepherdstown is just a short drive away. It is a quiet, quaint town, with plenty of great restaurants and interesting shops.
We completely unplugged for the week - no TV, no computer - and it was wonderful. We cannot recommend the Stone House enough! It is a fantastic place to enjoy and reconnect. We cannot wait to go back.
Loved this little cottage
We had a wonderful stay. The cottage was roomy, comfortable and really had a lot of charm. We spent a lot of time on the front porch with a beautiful view of the river. We did a lot of cooking, the kitchen is well equipped.
Shepherdstown is a great little town, the people are friendly , lots of nice shops and restaurants.
It's close enough to Washington for day trips, then back to the relaxed countryside, away from the crowds.
Amazing amount of history in the area! Close to Antietam Battlefield and Harper Ferry.
We just stumbled across this place and were delighted. It was one of the best vacations we had. We plan to come back!
The house was beautiful and very well kept.
Better than the pictures
The photos of the property don't do it justice. The house is set against a wooded hillside with plenty of foliage and shade. The house is cozy, roomy and has all needed amenities. The river is closer than expected and the fire pit is in the perfect location to enjoy the river and some local wildlife. The only downside is that River Road runs through the property, between the house and the river.
While not heavily traveled, speed doesn't seem to be a concern for some drivers. The river is wide, lazy and scenic - great for a leisurely canoe trip. Shepherdstown is conveniently close and the people are welcoming and friendly. There are several good restaurants and interesting shops. Would certainly recommend this property to a couple looking to get away from the noise and congestion of suburbia. And for a special treat, travel to Sharpsburg for ice cream at Nutters!
Paradise by the Potomac
We loved this home, the riverside, and the location! As two senior couples, we enjoyed relaxing in the charming house and sitting around the fire pit next to the lovely river. The owner shared interesting local history with us, which was very helpful. We had a delicious dinner at The Press Room in Shepherdstown (a bit of a splurge, but worth it). This was a perfect, quiet but conveniently-located retreat for us for the 3 nights.
