Originally from Chicago and the western suburbs we fell in love with the Galena area years ago as we drove through the area en route to Dubuque, Iowa. Eventually we bought this cottage that we have so much enjoyed and now would like to offer you the chance to fall in love with Galena and the beauty of JoDavies County
Richard purchased this House in 2008
What makes this House unique
A special little cottage-somewhat quaint, nestled within the settlement...trees, a seasonal view of Lake Galena, beautiful starry nights and the lull of Galena falls...hiking trails just down the road. A quiet retreat, tho minutes away from tourist hustle and bustle of historic Galena if desired.

Perfect for us
We had a great time! My husband, two first graders, and I stayed at this Settlement property to go skiing at Chestnut Mountain. We've stayed at the Chestnut Mountain resort before, but this time we were happy we went with the house. We had plenty of space and the house was well maintained. It was easy to locate and check in, and we were able to make breakfasts and dinner at the house, so we saved money. We used the pool one night which was fun, and also ordered pizza at the nearby Eagle Ridge resort. Fabulous!
Nice place for a girls weekend
Everything was perfect for our girls weekend. We especially loved the wood burning fireplace. The owner was great to work with and quick to respond to inquiries.
Clean and comfortable.
Very nice. Cozy, clean.
Great experience. We will come again.
Quaint, clean, nice view and perfectly located. We had a very enjoyable weekend and staying here contributed. There are several trails to walk on, beautiful lake, waterfall and a short distance to downtown Galena.
We will be back.
Greeted by Mouse
Was overall disappointed by this property. It was very outdated. Also when I opened the front door there was a mouse half dead on the floor that I had to dispose of. The owner offered to bring people out to set more traps but I didn’t want to have to deal with more mice. I know it’s a wooded area, but it just wasn’t a good first impression. Everything else seemed relatively clean. Owner was great to work with.
We have a pest control service come by monthly, and they put out bait and set traps. Unfortunately, being in the county we can not avoid a mouse or two coming in when the weather drops in the Fall (it had just dropped by 25 degrees two days before).
All of our appliances, i.e. refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. have been replaced within the last 2 years.
We are constantly upgrading items and plan to update the cabinets in the winter.
A number of guests have considered our place quaint, and comfortable and like the country style decor.
Nestled within 6800 acres of the Galena Territory our cottage provides the perfect backdrop from which to enjoy 19th century history and architecture, great local wineries and restaurants, arts and crafts and many eclectic shops found in Galena and the surrounding towns of Elizabeth, Hanover and Stockton.Within the territory you might enjoy Illinois' largest golf course, the Eagle Ridge Spa, the marina from which you could rent pontoons, the Shenandoah riding stables, outdoor and indoor swimming, a fitness center, and a game room featuring pool tables, ping pong, foosball, etc. Miles of trails for hikers and cyclists, and wonderful opportunities for birdwatching.
The town of Galena is home to art galleries, spas, wineries, irish music and the home of President Ulysses S Grant. More trails to bicycle or-perhaps canoeing or kayaking the Mississippi backwaters is more to your fancy. Come winter there are the skiing/snowboarding opportunities at Chestnut mountain or snowshoeing at the Galena Cellar Vineyard.
Downtown Dubuque is 40 minutes away--here one might enjoy various concerts and musical/cultural arts events, casinos, Mississippi riverboat rides, and the world's steepest trolley.
For lovers of nature-rolling hills close to the might Mississippi; for lovers of wine-the many award winning wineries; lovers of outdoor sports; lovers of history; or just lovers...you are welcome.
