Channing House with heated salt water pool and spa on a large private estate

Overview

About the property

Bucolic setting, great for kids, pool and hot tub, extensive grounds, central

Named after Margo Channing, Bette Davises’ larger than life character in All About Eve 1951; Channing House is a spacious 2-bedroom guest house on a private estate in Los Angeles. Once part of Davis’ estate Riverbottom, it is nestled in the equestrian area, which abuts Griffith Park. With the heated salt water pool and bucolic atmosphere, it is a perfect holiday spot and an oasis for work...

The MASTER BEDROOM looks through arched windows to the fruit orchard and the unique round brickwork and shingled roof of the original gate to Riverbottom, Bette Davis' estate. The room is bright and spacious with a queen-sized bed. A Moroccan chandelier casts soft light patterns on the clear bright walls. Watch the moon rise over the blue foothills of Mount Hollywood.

The stylish Moroccan LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN with the great round white chandeliers that pattern the white washed walls. The large Moroccan wood dining table is bathed in light from the arched windows. Open plan full kitchen with dishwasher, because no one wants to do the dishes while on holiday:-) 48.5" flat screen television with both digital cable (with the movie package and HBO) and Netflix and Amazon for streaming; and a handmade Moroccan couch (that can also be used as another bed). The cool tiled floor, original art on the walls, and the extensive grounds make this a great ‘home away from home'

The second BEDROOM also has Moroccan lights, dark wood floors and two comfy twin beds. The front windows look out toward the San Gabriel Mountains as they turn purple in the evening light.

The slate tiled BATHROOM has a built in shower room and a stack-able washer and drier. The patterned hallway off the living room has the controls for the central heating and air conditioning.

We have a bonus room that can be set up in different ways; an office with the desk and a number of outlets for those on a work trip; or as a little baby room with a crib (let me know when you book if you want to use either of these options).

The estate has a number of houses available through VRBO. The interior space is exclusive to this listing. The exterior is shared with the other guests staying in the houses on the estate.

The grounds are huge with two gardens. The front area, where Channing House is, with the fruit orchard, vegetable garden, gated parking, electric car charger, fountain and seating areas. The back garden is dominated by a large open area to play games in, a lawn around the salt water heated pool and spa, a French Lavender maze for children to walk and solve, the sun bathing area and outdoor shower, sink and loo, and of course the horse stables (currently uninhabited) and art studio under the arches of the barn at the far end of the estate (please check out my two Airbnb Experiences for painting https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/65880 and horseback riding). Further still and you reach the back gate that opens onto Easter Field and all of Griffith Park.

Please don't let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.

Rivergate is our country house, we too stay at the houses for weekends and holidays. With the added bonus that I am right there to answer questions or fix anything that may arise. I won the Hero Award form Airbnb and I take my role as your host very seriously.

We share the estate with other houses that are available for let:

http://www.vrbo.com/712356 Rivergate House is the biggest and grandest.

http://www.vrbo.com/488798 Dillard's Pool House is in the heart of the estate and the bigger of the one bedroom houses.

http://vrbo.com/465113 is O’Leary’s Cabin, the smallest and most remote of the houses at the far end of the estate. The whole estate can be seen at http://www.vrbo.com/708660

Rivergate is a unique place and a little hard to describe, it can feel a little like a village on a summer day.

What makes this house unique

There are great cycling trails and running tracks throughout the neighborhood and into the Park. Downtown Los Angeles is about 15 minutes away, depending a little on the infamous LA traffic (there is a shortcut through the park along Riverside Drive that is very pretty and cuts out some of the traffic).

Burbank and Glendale are home to loads of shopping including the Americana (a high end outdoor mall with fountain, fine restaurants and events). A Pavilions supermarket is one of the finest around and within walking distance.

This was a find! A well-kept and safe property. Perfect for a family of four. The Moroccan details were perfectly incorporated- discreet and not overly done. We enjoyed the pool, relaxed from the sun in our comfortable and naturally-lit unit. The freeways were accessible making visiting other parts of LA very easy. Amy was discreet and accessible making us feel at home. We hope to come back next time we're in SoCal. Thank you for a pleasant and lovely getaway.

The neighborhood is upscale and residential, many of the large houses have private stables and it is common to see cowboys riding in the streets. We are just a few miles from Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater (two exits on the freeway, or about 5 minutes). We are bicycling distance from the studios (NBC, CBS, Warner Bros, Disney …).

The stable block at the back of the grounds (original to the Riverbottom estate) abuts Griffith Park, the largest municipal park in America. We are close to four golf courses, Travel Town, the LA Zoo, The Autry Museum, several horse riding facilities and playgrounds, Pickwick ice-skating and bowling and of course the wildlife and 52 miles of hiking and horse riding trails in the park.

The City is redeveloping the LA River and there are great cycling trails and running tracks throughout the neighborhood. Spacious, Comfortable, Great Location!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Channing House! It was close to Warner Brothers Studio, Griffith Park and Observatory and several great local restaurants. Amy was kind and informative and the house was spacious and comfortable for 4 adults. We enjoyed the outdoor spaces in the mornings and evenings. We highly recommend Channing House and hope to return for another stay in the future!

A Wonderful Week at Channing House!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of four – Mom and Dad and two sons aged 21 and 18. Our trip to Los Angeles focused on the movie and TV industry, so having a place to stay that kept us close to the center of the action was important. The Channing House fit the bill perfectly in that regard, and its proximity to Griffith Park was an added bonus for the runner in the family (that would be me). Our only regret is that we didn’t spend as much time at the house to enjoy the grounds and the pool as we thought we would.

We were on the go every morning by 9 and not back until late at night most days. Getting to places from the house was easy with access to Highways 5 and 134 just minutes away, and we could avoid the highways completely by taking Riverside drive or Zoo Drive to get around Griffith Park if we were exploring locally. The neighborhood is a mix of residential and commercial (retail and restaurants), with a Pavilions grocery store and Starbucks just minutes away, along with Denny’s, Subway, Little Caesar’s (which closes at 10:30pm which we learned at 10:31pm one night when we were craving pizza - order from Pizza Boy - so good!). The house is also immediately beside some stables and just down the road from the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, so lots of horses to be seen and the opportunity to ride is nearby. Access to the horse trails right out the back gate was great to have. Our next door neighbor’s donkey was entertaining with his braying around 9am each morning.

The house was quite comfortable to come home to each evening, and we felt safe and secure while there with the gate access and the fact that it’s such a quiet neighborhood. The beds were comfortable, the Netflix access on the TV was much appreciated by our sons, and the main room (dining, living, and kitchen) was enjoyed by all. The pool was great to dive into following my morning runs and the grounds, shared as they are by all the guests, are expansive enough to allow for moments of solitude if required.

Amy was a responsive and attentive host. All of our correspondence was via email as our timing didn’t work out to connect face to face. As mentioned earlier, we were away from the property quite a bit, so we missed saying hello to Amy. Regardless, we knew she was there if needed and the few items that came up through the week that required her attention were taken care of quickly. Enjoy Channing House, enjoy LA, and enjoy your vacation! We certainly enjoyed ours. Thank once again to Amy!

Great place to relax

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Channing House. It was a great place to kick back and relax. The house was spacious and close to Griffith Park, Universal Studios and Hollywood . We were welcome with a basket of fruit, coffee and milk which was a great treat! The pool was fantastic for cooling off. It was nice having neighbours. Amy was great at answering email/questions promptly. We have no hesitation highly recommending Channing for others to stay.

Safe, comfortable, great location

  • 5 of 5

The house was spacious and clean. Amy was a terrific host and was available by phone and on location often to tend to any needs/concerns. Kitchen had everything we needed for a 2 week stay. Most importantly, the beds were comfortable. My daughters enjoyed the pool and there were plenty of things to see and do nearby.

The property is awesome with fruit trees, a pool and jacuzzi, and surrounded by stables.

  • 5 of 5

Amy is great and the house is big with a large kitchen/dining room/living room and two nice sized bedrooms. It's just inside an electric gate with space to park your car. The location was great for our stay - we did everything while there (went to Venice Malibu and Santa Monica beaches, Beverly Hills, lake Hollywood, Hollywood, Pasadena, Burbank, and Griffith park observatory). The house has a great location next to Griffith Park with lots of hiking and horseback riding trails. It was a perfect stay for our family and we would go back again! Thank you awesome Amy!

It is a charming little community in a great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Amy, our host, was wonderful. The House was a perfect place for our girls trip. Lots of space and beautiful courtyard. We had tickets to the Ellen show and it was very easy to get there. Lots of great restaurants within minutes. In the middle of everything but very private and peaceful. You could here the donkey next door in the morning.
