Cherry Lake Lodge is a newly renovated historic woodland cabin with all the comforts of home. This unique retreat has its’ origins as lodging and work station for researchers when Morgan Monroe State Forest was part of the Northeast Forest Experimental Station in the 1930’s.
The lodge’s large elevated back deck overlooks acres of natural beauty- a great escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Watch for deer, wild turkey and forest wildlife as you relax on the expansive deck and enjoy the comfort of your own woodland retreat.
The nearby 3 Lakes Trail and Mason Ridge Trail offers 10 and 3 mile hiking opportunities. The 4 acre Cherry Lake is a short stroll away and a great spot for a picnic or throwing out a fishing line from the gentle, manicured shoreline.
Cherry Lake Lodge was completely renovated in 2013. It features 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms (including the master bath) and a pull out sleeper sofa in the great room. Maximum overnight capacity of the lodge is 6.
The improved floor plan features a new kitchen, adjoining dining area, great room with fireplace and wide deck across the entire back of the house overlooking the surrounding woods.
Only 45 miles from Indianapolis, 30 minutes from Bloomington and 2 hours from Louisville. Cherry Lake Lodge is an ideal location and 1-of-a-kind get away for small retreats and families.
Morgan-Monroe State Forest had its beginning in 1929 as an Experimental Forest. Research and active forest management is still part of this State Forest. Today visitors can enjoy Cherry Lake Lodge, the restored and fully updated 1930’s research station. The 2 bedroom modern cabin is nestled down a quiet forest lane near the State Forest office. State Forests are great places to visit and we are pleased to be able to offer this unique experience to the people of Indiana and those visiting our State.
Jim Allen purchased this lodge in 1929
In 2011 we embarked on a project to make unique forest retreat homes available to families and small groups who might enjoy the deep forest experience as much as we do. Cherry Lake Lodge is the second project we have completed. The first lodge is Covered Bridge Retreat located in Parke County, Indiana and nestled in 300 acres of State Forest. Covered Bridge even has its own campground and equestrian facilities for hosting large groups. We knew Cherry Lake Lodge was something special and with care we added an extra bedroom, bathroom and fully updated the cabin with modern amenities. Our staff live nearby and are accessible in case of emergency.
Wonderful retreat in the middle of a forest. Totally secluded and perfectly appointed with every detail. Highly recommend !
We took a weekend away for Mother's Day and had a lovely time staying in the forest lodge. The cabin is beautifully decorated and amply stocked. We enjoyed the solitude, the beautiful views, and the easy access to nearby walking trails. We will absolutely return in the near future!
Kudos to Morgan Monroe State forest for this wonderful lodge. Cherry Lake lodge quality is above and beyond all state properties. Everything about it is first class.
Indiana weather gave us a treat too. It was in the 50's for our beautiful hikes on Sat and Sun we woke up to 2" of snow. The forest was breath taking.
DNR had the roads cleared and treated for our 10:00 departure. Thank you kind of. It would of been ok to be snowed in!
We will be back. Loved it
This was our second year in a row staying at Cherry Lake Lodge. I graduated from IU in 2000 and try to make it back each year for a football game. Each year it is the same story, which cruddy hotel will we have to pay ridiculous rates to stay in Bloomington? Last year it all changed. We found Cherry Lake Lodge and decided to go for it. What a great choice.
Amazing setting, unbeatable rate and plenty of room and amenities to keep our young family of five happy for 4 days. This place may not be for everyone...its deep in the state forest, cell signals are nearly non-existent and tv signals are weak. If you are looking to party in Bloomington and stumble home...this isn't your place. If you want a clean, new, beautiful, peaceful lodge for a long weekend, this is probably your place.
The lodge is nicer in person than in the photos...its almost too good to be true. I am hesitant to leave a positive review, because I want this place to stay a secret. It will be our #1 choice for each trip back to Bloomington.
This lodge was very nicely refurbished and love the beautiful setting in Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Kitchen was very well stocked and the wrap-around deck with the grill/fire-pit was very nice to enjoy the beautiful setting. You are within close proximity to Oliver and Butler Wineries as well as Bloomington. Only reason we gave it 4 vs. 5 stars is because cell coverage w/Verizon was sketchy, but AT&T seemed to be fine and no Wi-Fi, but that may be a big plus for some! :) Great stay - thank you!
We loved staying at cherry lake lodge! It is beautiful in pictures but when we actually arrived the lodge looked even better in person. We were especially impressed by the decor and finishes inside. At the very end of the drive there is a trail and across the road is cherry lake with more hiking options. We went to Oliver Winery and Bloomington on one of the days we stayed and it's just a short drive! We will be back, we loved this lodge. You won't be disappointed:)
Cherry Lake Lodge is surrounded by 23,000 acres of State Forest land. The State Forest offers several hiking trails, and is a popular spot for spring mushrooms, seasonal hunting, bird watching, geocaching and camping. The 1930's fire lookout tower is located near the Forest's playground and open to public climbing during set hours. A short walk away, Cherry Lake is a 2 acre pond that offers good bankside fishing for family fun.
