About the property

2 Story historical landmark home

Our home is a 4 bedroom, 2 1/3 bath house (3000 square feet) (with all 4 bedrooms upstairs) across the street from the beach. It's has cherrywood beams downstairs and built-in cabinets with glass doors in the dining room. The dining room has a beautiful cherrywood table with seating for 6. The living room has a fireplace along with ample sitting for relaxing and watching TV. The kitchen is fitted with dishes, silverware, pots, pans, electric skillets, slow cooker and everything else a person could want to cook a fabulous meal. We have a toilet next to the kitchen. Upstairs you will find one bedroom has twin beds. Another room has a double bed with a loft (that will sleep one comfortably). The next room has a queen bed. There is a bathroom that services all three bedrooms. The sunroom is located next to the master bedroom in the front of the house. It is a sunny and relaxing room, and I must say it is my favorite room in the house. Our master bedroom is next door to the sunroom. It has a queen bed in it with a loveseat for relaxing. This room has an en-suite with a jacuzzi tub built for two. The sunroom and master suite have french doors leading out to a balcony. We also have a Queen size air mattress that will sleep 2 adults. We have parking for one car inside our gated (remote control)driveway and also parking for one car in our driveway. You will find that having parking is a real asset in Long Beach.

About Doris Bartlett

My husband and I are retired. My husband was a vice president of human resources for major corporations. He grew up in Tucson, Arizona and graduated from the University of Arizona. My background was in payroll and also human resources. We have 6 children and 14 grandchildren. (a lot). We love this home and have had many wonderful holidays and dinners with family and friends. We entertained regularly and have had anywhere from 10 to 100 people at the house at one time. We also have a beautiful home in the Palm Springs area (the desert of southern california).

Doris Bartlett purchased this house in 1996

Why Doris Bartlett chose Long Beach

I grew up in the Long Beach area and loved it. It is very rare to find a 100 year old, 2 story home with an attic and a full cellar (part of which we have made into a wine cellar) in Southern California. The home has history that dates back to World War II. It is a historical landmark in Long Beach. We have a marble fireplace in the living room for those cooler winter nights.

What makes this house unique

This charming home sleeps 8 - 10 people. There is a fenced and gated patio that runs the full length of the front of the house. We normally have our coffee out there and drinks in the afternoon. There are 2 tables on the patio with seating for 8. The home is centrally located to many attractions. You can be in Hollywood within the hour, Santa Monica in 45 minutes, Malibu within an hour. Santa Barbara is a 2 hour drive, but well worth it. Then heading south, you can reach Orange County (Irvine) within 45 minutes or Laguna Beach within 45 minutes. San Diego is an hour and a half away. For those surfers of the world, you can be surfing within 15 minutes in Huntington Beach or further down the coast in San Clemente within 45 minutes.

Notes:
Only 2 mission revival homes made it through the 1920's Long beach earthquake and ours is one of them. It is a historical landmark. We have a picture on the fireplace mantel showing the house back in the early days. Just a little tidbit: the man who built the house was called James Beer. Because of that my husband always refers to our house as the 1st beer house in Long Beach.

Beautiful home full of history and character

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed this spacious home for 5 nights. The location was perfect, close to the beach and the convention center. The hosts were easy to communicate with, and I would definitely stay here again!

Owner was very nice, but there were a few things that made it so I would not stay here again.

  • 2 of 5

Loud traffic was probably the worst problem. Akward bathrooms and kitchens were another big issue. Positives were affordable, good location, and most beds are comfortable.

Disappointed & No privacy

  • 1 of 5

Great picture of the house, but definitely disappointing. The house is on a very, very noisy, busy street. It seems, that the owners live in the house, the "office" is wide open, with all of their personal information laying around. Weird

No privacy.. The owner, Joe, wife/partner(?) attempted, (with her own key) to enter the house while my Family, were all inside relaxing!! she said, she wanted to "use the bathroom" Very creepy. They also gardened all day long in front of the house, with a radio blasting so loud, you couldn't open a window. They also worked in the back yard, which is very small maybe 20' x 20', and in and out of the garage, so they were always close to a door or window. We felt like we were being watched and had to close the curtains/blinds in order to have privacy. I would not recommend this house for small children, there isnt any place to go outside with them. The house was ok, a little dusty, the carpets were grungy. Only one shower works in the master bedroom, the other shower only sprays.

I would not recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: The referenced renter's had 9 + people with 5 children and 2 dogs and they left the house in an excessive mess for the cleaning crew. We do not accept renters with dogs and we made an exception for this renter to allow her two dogs onsite because she convinced us they were so well trained and would not leave a mess. With crayon markings on the walls and guest book and dog dander and spots on the carpets it was necessary to have a special carpet shampooing in addition to the monthly shampooing . The house is always thoroughly cleaned, dusted and vacuumed after each guest. As with many VRBO's we offer a private home that we occasionally use when available, which apparently bothered our guests Unfortunately our gardeners were hired to work on the yard and put in fall colors, but they failed to notify the manager when they were coming in order to request permission from the renters which we were responsible for and we apologize. When the manager came by to check on the gardeners she discovered that the back security door was left wide open. With no car in the driveway she proceeded to check that the inner door was locked and to close the security door. At that time the manager became aware that somebody was in the house. The inner door was never unlocked and no bathroom was ever requested or used. We are proud of the way we leave our home for our constant flow of wonderful guests. Unfortunately, some people renting private homes may ultimately prefer leaving their dogs with a sitter and spending the extra money for 3 or 4 guest rooms at a high end hotel.

Niece's Wedding

  • 3 of 5

This is a true old Mission home with beautiful wood work. We used the front patio, back courtyard and dining room for a family dinner and it worked well. Joe (owner) was attentive and provided extra service - like washing all the courtyard chairs and providing a bottle of wine. Nice ocean breeze (fans, no ac), close to beach, Long Beach, Belmont Shores, and Queen Mary. This home is an airbnb, not a typical vrbo, in that it is lived in by owner who vacates for rental. 30 minutes from LAX. Five adults and two kids travelling from across the country enjoyed our stay together. Lots to do within an hour of this house - tide pools, Disney parks, shopping, all of LA, Aquarium of Pacific, etc.

This home was terrific.

  • 4 of 5

This was a very roomy home. There were 9 of us staying for 3 days. The reassuring feature to the home is the gates, it gave us a sense of security not only for the children but also while we we're away and while we slept. It's fully stocked with everything. I was able to meet Joe on our last day there and he was very kind and would have like to have visited with him more. We visited other beaches only because the beach there was an inlet off the ocean, but it was nice to walk to the marina and take the shuttle boat out to the Queen Mary. All in all, we had a good time. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the older homes. Make sure to head over to Malibu to the Matador beach it was beautiful and a little further up is a nice place to get shells.
