You may on occasion spot our pet Bunnies hopping around outside. We rescued and adopted a few. On occasion we have foster bunnies too.
Picture yourself here... just bring your suitcase and you are home!
We are both educators. Gene is in admin. at a local elementary school. Jane teaches art at the elementary and university level. We have 2 grown children. We just remodeled our guest house and have had a lot of fun doing it. This is our first property together. We love to travel and enjoy sharing travel adventure stories with fellow travelers. We have a bunny that you'll fall in love with too.
Jane purchased this bungalow in 2013
San Pedro is a port district of the city of Los Angeles. It is a harbor town rich in history. From once being the fishing port in the nation to now having the USS Iowa, Point Fermin, near Terranea Resort, Long Beach. Generations of families still live in the community. It is quite a unique place a small town within large Los Angeles, kind of like the last little secret harbor town. We love that.
You'll find our home has been restored as much as possible to be charming and honor the vintage Spanish style bungalow that it is. It is cozy in the sense of feeling like home immediately. You'll love the completely new kitchen, original vintage tile in the bathroom, new TV, cellar, and bedrooms. Original hardwood floors, coved ceilings and hallway niche. Everything you need is here, books, dishes, board games, linens...just bring your clothes. Look for our pet bunny grazing in the yard. She is friendly and likes to play. We live in the front house, so we are within reach. We are also happy to serve as your concierge. :-)
Very friendly (on-site) hosts. Comfortable house with unexpected amenities (washer/dryer/detergent). Great supermarket only about 5 blocks away. Location was good and great for walking around the neighborhood. Waterfront area with museums/food/drink/boat rides could be walked to if you are younger and fitter than we are. Parking is hard to get (and timed), but we didn't care because we arrived by train and did a lot of Uber-ing. Jane and Gene are foster parents to several bunnies and it was absolutely delightful to watch the bunnies and enjoy them in the courtyard. Good rate (4 of us shared). Would we stay there again? YES!
What a wonderful place to stay in the San Pedro/Long Beach area! We were here visiting some LA area colleges for our daughter and thought it would be nice to stay in a home rather than a hotel and are we glad we did! Gene and Jane were so accommodating and friendly. Jane even spent quite a bit of time talking to our daughter about the Art Education field. Our DD really found it valuable as she begins her pursuit of that career. Attention to details and communication were definitely a strong point. Clear directions on how to do everything from getting into the property to turning on the TV was provided and appreciated. Basic items like olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper, coffee, foil, laundry detergent, Tupperware, sandwich bags and much more were all there! We cooked breakfast all three mornings and made dinner two of the nights. The kitchen was stocked with all the cooking tools you might need. The beds were comfortable and the casita was roomy enough for us to each have our own space when we wanted it. Movies and board games are also provided. The property was neat and clean when we arrived with plenty of linens, towels and toiletries available. And if we needed anything, Gene and Jane were just a text away, on property. The downsides were minor, parking was a minor inconvenience (but clearly explained in their listing, so no surprises!), but we always were able to find a spot even on the street cleaning day! If you are not used to city living (we live on 5 acres in the Ohio countryside) it can be a bit noisy especially if the nearby fire station gets a call! But we slept so soundly in the comfortable beds that it was nothing more than a very slight inconvenience. Nearby is a grocery store, coffee shop, many restaurants and the beaches. The neighborhood felt very safe. Don't miss the Wayfarers Chapel up the coast a bit, it was designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright's son Lloyd and it is a beautiful piece of architecture and landscaping. We also went out to Catalina for the day with the ferry being only 5 minutes away. If we ever find ourselves in the LA area again, we will definitely stay at Casa Castillo again!
This is our fourth year staying at this property. It is comfortable and well maintained and the hosts, Gene and Jane, are very welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed our stay there during the first year very much and thought it was well-appointed, but the hosts are constantly making improvements and updates, so it is even better now. We like the fenced-in courtyard which adds to the coziness. There are many activities in the area, all only a drive of five minutes away. We are never bored. An added bonus is the easy access to beautiful beaches, without the traffic headaches and absurd prices of some other areas in LA. Highly recommend this guest house.
We really liked this place, maybe with a parking space for guest it could be better!
This little house was so great! Jane and Gene were very welcoming and helpful. The house had everything we needed- from laundry soap and olive oil to a step stool and umbrella stroller for the kids. It was walking distance to a grocer and it looked like busses picked up there too. We spent some beautiful time at nearby cabrillo beach and even saw some dolphins playing. The street parking situation was a little more stressful than we hoped for, but was on par with most of our experiences living in major cities. Jane and Gene even went extra miles to help us snag parking when they could- and of course they are honest about the parking in their property description. We would use this place again if our travels bring us back to LA- it was worth every penny.
It has been a fantastic stay at Jane and Gene's place. Very cosy, very beautifully decorated with everything you need and even more. 100% reccomended to stay in this lovely place.
