We built this home away from home to get away from our busy lives in CT and enjoy all of what 'Vacationland' has to offer. Relax and enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Maine. This house and property has truly been our labor of love. We are happy to share it with you!
Linda purchased this house in 2008
We picked the sleepy town of Brownfield Maine to build our 3,000 square foot cottage because of the easy access to everything we might like to do including: the arts (music, local artists, craftsmen etc) including Stone Mountain arts Center. Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and boating. Less then 1 hour to old Orchard Beach, or Freeport. Shopping and great restaurants of all types. Nearly (20) Ski resorts within an hour drive. Snowmobile and snowshoe trail access directly across the street.
Just about everything you would want to do from minutes to max 1 hour away.
We fell in love with the beautiful park like setting, to build our home. The ever changing Saco river is mesmerizing. We have the only peninsula on the river which we go to often and sit on our swing. It feels like a golden pond. Being so close to the river allows us to witness nature in all her beauty. To see turkeys, eagles, ducks, and deer. Are all part of the beauty of this place. A small piece of heaven.
I got married in the area and rented this cottage for the wedding party to stay in. We had plenty of room and it was absolutely perfect. The game room downstairs was so much fun and the outdoor area with the fire pit was a great place to unwind and relax. I highly recommend this cottage!
This home has now become the epicenter of our annual family vacation (We've come back 3 times and still can't get enough). We are already talking about 2017 (We go on several vacations a year - this is the only one we repeat)
• This house is super spacious: 5 Bedrooms + 2 small rooms with Bunks for kids (9 beds across 7 Separate Bedrooms)
• The backyard opens into the Saco river and contains a fire-pit, swing sets (both the adult and the kid kinds) + Tree swing
• The un-manicured area of the backyard contains wild cranberries, blackberries and raspberries (I also found clams but I wasn't sure if these were edible)
• The basement is super cool: Our kids loved cozying up on the couch under artificial flickering stars while watching a movie and playing with all the available toys (Lego sets , Air-hockey to name a few)
• Kitchen was spacious and contained all the gadgets, cutlery and spices one would need.
• House is kid-friendly (Baby gates, crib, high seat) are all available.
• Stone Mountain Cultural Center is <10 minutes away (great venue to catch a concert)
• Woods Pond, Highland Lake, Moose Pond are all near by (swimming, boating & fishing)
• The area is littered with Farm Stands (The next-door farm stand was particularly awesome - Fresh produce & flowers)
• The kids and I tubed from the Brownfield bridge to the house (~1.5 hours trip). This stretch of the Saco river is serene (we only ran into one other party)
• Within 1 hour of the house you will find: The White Mountains National Forest, North Conway, Mt. Washington, Portland, Freeport and Bridgton. We vacationed in this house for 20+ days and still didn't experience it all. There are activities for everyone (hiking, rock climbing, shopping, theme parks, scenic railroads, scenic drives, boating, rafting, fishing... need I go on?)
Linda - If you are ever considering selling the home (Please let us know first!)
Thank you and we hope to visit again soon
My family and I very much enjoyed our stay! We consisted of 2 senior adults, 2 adults, and 1 baby. We loved the open floor plan and my husband and my father, being carpenters, really enjoyed hearing about the construction of the house from David, the caretaker. They couldn't get over how well built the house was, how beautifully it was done, and the attention to detail. They were both very impressed, and trust me, that’s not easy to do!
We had a great time in the basement playing pool and air hockey! The stars in the ceiling in the TV area were a lot of fun (kids would love this), and there was a beautiful mural painted in that area as well. Extra bonus - there was a second refrigerator in the basement - it made refilling our beverages very easy while we enjoyed some time in the game room. The basement also has a play area for young children, that was really cute. I think this house has a lot to offer for families with children of all ages.
TV is limited, as the house is a little remote, but not a concern for us. When we vacation, we don't watch a lot of TV (I can do that at home anytime). We traveled into Naples & Sebago State Park one day and into North Conway another day. Both are within easy driving distance from the house.
Having the Saco in the backyard adds to the beautiful surroundings. The owners take a lot of pride in their house and the grounds. It's beautifully landscaped and set up for entertaining – Nice big deck with a screened in area, fire pit with Christmas lights above (really cute by the way), children's swing set, hammock, patio area from the walk out basement, and even a wooden swing by the river. My mom really enjoyed some quite time there.
Swimming in this part of the Saco behind the house would be challenging. There was a sand bar and small beach across the way, but getting to it, you would want to have a canoe, kayak, or some sort of raft. This time of year (late August) the Saco is generally low, but with the drought this year, its even lower. There's a lot of slippery rocks you would have to cross to get into the water. So, we didn't end up swimming at the house, but we did go swimming at a beach area right down the road, under the bridge. Water was perfect! Even the 7 month old baby loved it (wasn't too cold for him)!
Thank you for a wonderful stay and we hope to be back sometime soon!
Rivers Edge Cottage is hands down the most beautiful vacation rental we have stayed at. It is beautifully decorated and fully equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The basement, pool table, air hockey, and Netflix provided were a favorite for the teenagers and a lifesaver for grown-up sanity. The house stayed nicely cool during a very hot stretch of weather, which was a relief. We also enjoyed several fires down at the fire pit. Note...there are hardly any bugs at all on the property - a treat to not deal with any mosquitos! The house is very conveniently located to Bridgton, Fryeburg, and North Conway, and we visited all 3. The location offers many possibilities for many different kinds of outdoor activities. With the drought Maine is having this summer, the river only went up to our ankles, so swimming was not a possibility, a big disappointment for all. However, Woods Pond Beach in Bridgton was a great find for a consolation prize; no fee, clean water, and docks for the kids to jump off, and we went there a few different times during the week. Rivers Edge is a great find. We enjoyed an even better time than we had expected!
Love love love this VRBO! This was our third visit! The house is beautifully decorated and has everything you need to feel at home.
Fabulous combination of outdoor (river to swim, fish, canoe/kayak in; swings for kids and great hammock as well as woods to explore) and indoor (many extremely comfortable beds and soft furniture for lounging and large dvd collection and table and active games including pool and fusball and air hockey tables. Kitchen well stocked and large deck with mosquito gazebo and large grill. Could not have been better.
