|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
The character of The PORCH begins long before you reach the house. You will drive down the magical road. The canopy of trees hangs heavy over the path before you. In summer, it shades the sun's heat and gives a gentle illumination to this place where so many creatures have scurried, on any particular day. You may be lucky enough to see a deer scamper across the road. Watch for its companion. I always seem to see them two at a time. You may get a thrill the first time you cross the low water bridge. It may not look it, but it is sturdy! The road will twist and turn as you make your way to The PORCH.....THIS IS HOW HOME IS SUPPOSED TO FEEL!! It's warm, not in the sense of temperature, although The PORCH can be toasty on a chilly night. The PORCH has a warmth that beacons you to slip off your shoes and snuggle into any of the many inviting areas, as comfy and soft as a little bird's nest. The hammock is especially nice on a starlit night. It is premium seating for the celestial show. The swing brings back thoughts of the end of a sweet date night. Remember being giddy as you glided back and forth, just anticipating that goodnight kiss...on the cheek, of course. And the rocking chair is almost demanding a nice glass of sweet tea or some homemade lemonade. The fire pit is screaming, 'Bring your marshmallows over here!! And some hotdogs while you are at it.' I guess the kids are looking for something requiring a little more energy. It that case, break out the croquet set, the horseshoes or the badminton set. The river is always a kidmagnet! It hosts interesting rocks and crawdads and fish (but you need a fishing pole to enjoy the best of those river creatures.) The wooded area invites the kids to explore the nature which surrounds them. There are some of the world's best rocks for climbing. But be careful nature is full of poison ivy and yucky stuff like that too. Nestled on a knoll which overlooks New River you will find the 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom quiet retreat you sought as you withdrew from the demands that have stressed you far too long. Forget those things for now. There is a wonderful bed, the perfect firmness, queen size, in the master bedroom. Across the masterbed room is a comfy reading chair. Just snuggle and wiggle down into it with a easy-read book. Soon those weary eyes will find the dreams of that deep sleep you've sought for so long. The master bedroom offers its own private deck for star-gazing like you've never seen. Relax in one of the nice swivel rockers, and your precious one in the other. Put your feet up on that padded ottoman. Lean back. Have you ever seen stars so bright?! I hope you are lucky enough to see a meteor shower. Heaven's fireworks. The master bath's beautiful granite countertop glistens, illuminated by the beams streaming in from the skylight. The master bath is fitted with shower, linen cabinet and walkin closet. Bedroom two is furnished with a queen bed and large walkin closet. This bedroom offers great comfort. The bed is a little haven, not just for sleeping but for refreshing your mind and recharging energy levels. Its a great place to seek God, and just listen for Him. The third bedroom has a twin bed with trundle plus a flip chair. Bath 2, the hall bath, has a shower/tub and granite countertops. Run some nice warm water in that tub. Step in, sink down and soak those too-tired-muscles! Oh and yes we have a commode inside! Yes! A real porcelain potty. And there is one in each bath. But if you want the experience of an old timey outhouse, there's one down by the river. And guess what! Its a double seater! So girls, grab your BFF's hand and do the potty thing together. You've never felt so close! But it is outside so watch for spiders. Bring your own biodegradable tissue. Meanwhile, back at the house, the kitchen is outfitted with coffee maker, stand mixer, George Forman and all the pots, pans and appliances you should need. The Jenn-Aire oven/range has a griddle top option. The side by side fridge should hold all the cold goodies you'll need for your stay. And though we don't recommend doing laundry on your vacation, the laundry/mud room has a large capacity washer and dryer. Feel free to crank up a nice fire as you watch your favorite reality show on the livingroom tv (but you can watch tv at home...go sit on the porch and enjoy nature's music of rushing water of New River or the babbling Elk Creek from the master deck). The wrap around porch attaches to the expansive deck of 250 sq ft. The views from the deck are fabulous. If you sit quietly, you'll hear the careful steps of the deer as they climb the hill beside the deck. I sometimes imagine I'm living in that wonderful treehouse from Swiss Family Robinson. The thing is you are away, you're in the midst of nature's finest offerings. Enjoy. Let your imagination have its way, like when you were a kid......remember?
In 1987 I said 'I do' to a handsome 6'2' eyes of blue hunk of a man. Those two words made me a 'mom' to a little girl and a young teen boy. Eight years later I birthed a son, making the third and last child of our little brood. It was only 6 months after David's birth that the oldest gave birth to our first grandmonster. Today, we have seven grandmonsters spanning 18 years, youngest to oldest. They enjoy coming to MiMi and Poppi's farm. Well, its more like a mini zoo with 5 horses, 3 donkeys, 2 peafowl, 3 turkeys, 5 dogs, 6 guinea and one brahma chicken. We have fish too. There are fish in the pond and some really colorful fish in the 200 gallon saltwater aquarium. We have named this little 20 acre zoo WHITE HORSE FARM.
Gayle purchased this house in 2000
Keith and I want to offer our mountain home for your enjoyment. Keith always wanted a home in the mountains, a getaway from the commercial world. I was more of a beach bum myself. I must say I was intrigued as we drove through the heavy canopy of trees that shaded the long dirt road and low water bridge. But the moment we turned into the driveway I knew. We knew. This was the home that would offer a seclusion of sorts, a feeling of being remote. The house is far enough out that you can pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist...until you need groceries or, Lord forbid medical care. You can find all you need in a short 10-15 mile drive into Sparta North Carolina, Galax or Independence Virginia. But if you are looking for lots of boutiques and shoe stores this may not be the place. However, all of that is offered in the outlet in Boone. You can take the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway. Boone is an hour away? There is a candle factory in Elkin. And just down the road a great pottery place. There's even a winery a little over a stone's throw. Oh yeah and the cheese factory in Jefferson is a must-see! AND SAMPLE! YUM! You can pick up a little something for BooPeep while you're there cause they really sell curds and whey! There are a few restaurants around which boast chefs from 5 star restaurants...so I've heard. Frankly, we either eat in or go into Sparta to Brown's Restaurant for good ole home-cookin! Now, don't get the idea that the house is tucked away so far that we don't get sunshine. There's lots of that and there are two full time residents very close by. One you can see from the porch. They may happen by. If you want to meet them put the flag out on the porch. That's their sign to stop in if they can. You can get lots of information about local happenings and history. Maybe they'll tell you of the nearby Indian burial ground. Be sure to see Independence's historical courthouse and the Davis-Bourne house. Well, I hope you'll visit real soon! Gayle
If you're into fishing, the river is a short walk down the driveway. Lots of people find enjoyment in floating or tubing, kayaking or canoeing down the river. There are unlimited photography opportunities. You may find a cave to explore. Stone Mountain park is close by with great hiking paths and a great waterfall. If waterfalls are your thing there's one just by the road outside Independence. Independence is home to the historical courthouse and the Davis-Bourne House. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a few miles away. Visit one or several of the wineries. Don't think twice about cutting the cheese...at the cheese factory in Jefferson. There are quaint shops for strolling through in Sparta and downtown Galax but no fancy boutiques. Check out Mangum Pottery which is just around the bend. There are bunches of crawdads in the creek...but be sure to put the little creatures back. Trout? Trout ponds everywhere. If you want a fishing guide for the river, we got 'em! There are fishing guides who know where all the fish hide. Enjoy the quiet country in the front porch rocker.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This was the best vacation in years. It was so nice to spend time away from all the busyness of work, every day demands that make you crazy. There was no schedule to keep. We just enjoyed all the pleasures that nature has to offer. This was a vacation that actually refreshed our souls rather than those typical vacations that make you feel like you need a vacation to get over the vacation. What a great place!! I highly recommend The PORCH!!
The house is warm and cozy. The surrounding area is amazing. Went into Independence to the farmer's market and then went to West Jefferson and had lunch at Havana, great Cuban restaurant. Thank you!
We had a wonderful time at The Porch. It had everything we could possible need! We had 4 teenage girls with us and there was some grumbling about the wifi situation at first, but it ended up being a great thing! They were all forced to put down their phones and sit around the table playing games. We all enjoyed sitting on the beautiful deck and going for walks. There was lots of laughter and fun. It was a great time of family bonding and my husband I can't wait to rent this property again. Gayle is wonderful to work with and goes out of her way to make sure your stay is perfect.
We had a magnificent time at the Porch. Inside and out this beautiful property provided a "very hospitable" setting for a family reunion. The kitchen was well supplied with all the needed cookware to satisfy our gourmet chef (my Son-in-Law) who provided a most excellent cuisine. The large porches with swings, rocking chairs, and picnic table provided covered and uncovered settings to dance in and out of the Sunny/Rain with Spots of Sun days which we enjoyed. The rooms were open and windows provided scenic enjoyment from inside the home. Gayle was kind to allow our daughters hounds to attend this event. :) They slept in their usual cages...as they do at home. Golf was close by in Sparta and challenging. A little later in the season with warmer weather we would have kayaked and swam in the New River. The hounds loved swimming in the stream anyway. The Porch will make a particularly scenic & enjoyable Autumnal rural setting .
We booked the Porch to visit in April while we ran Grayson Highlands Trail Marathon/Half Marathon. The house is so lovely and complete with anything we could have needed. The views from the rocking chairs on the porch made leaving for the race very difficult. Knowing that we had this home to return to after the race made us run much faster! We walked along the river as a warm-up the day before the race and loved watching all the activity on the river. The park was an easy drive from the house- the wild ponies are amazing! We hope to return in the fall when we can just relax and enjoy the fall foliage without running!!!
Our second Christmas at the Porch was just as relaxing and comfortable as the first. The weather was unseasonably warm, but that made it easy to enjoy the porch swing and those great rocking chairs. Even though we had lots of rain, the views of the river from that mountain top were just as beautiful as ever, and we really can't think of a more perfect place to enjoy Christmas morning! Thanks again Gayle, for sharing the Porch with our family.
I had to be in Independence for work and was looking for a place to stay where my retired husband might enjoy joining me on the trip. We found the spot when I booked the "Porch". On the last day, when we were packing up, my husband commented that he wished we could stay another 3 days! Gayle was so kind and accommodating working with me through date changes and other craziness that I created during my booking. A great place to stay in a beautiful area! Thank you so much for making working away from home like being on vacation!
Seclusion and nature are the highlights of this 3 bedroom house which sits high enough to have wonderful river views and access for tubing or fishing. Visit with a local in the nearby town and discover caves and waterfalls by the roadside. Biking? The famous Virginia Creeper and Independence Bike trails are close. Wineries and the famous Mangum Pottery are less than 10 miles. Grab a raft, canoe, kayak or an old inner tube and paddle your troubles away. Try your luck at fly or pole fishing (the New River offers a variety of fish and the area bounds with trout ponds) for dinner or River House offers fine dining. Be certain to visit the cheese factory in nearby Jefferson. And if you are a golfer, there are a slew of golf courses from which to choose. Book a trail ride with a local stable.
