The home also boasts a beautifully landscaped garden yard with relaxing front porch and backyard seating The home has stunning vaulted/Abbey ceilings on the top floor, big screen TV with tons of channels and lots of comfortable sitting venues to relax and enjoy its Victorian charm. While you don't really need a car in this area, as the 'T' stop to Harvard sq with access to all of Boston is across the street, the home offers off street parking, a rarity in Cambridge! At 1900 sq ft with four queen and one king size sleeping the home can accommodate 8 people/4 couples comfortably. The upstairs pillow sofa is a favorite spot for all, adults, teenagers, and kids to sleep as well.

You have access to the home including washer and dryer, gardens, etc... We provide all the linen, towels, soap, coffee and paper products you need. The Coffee Maker will be fully loaded and ready to go when you arrive and the WiFi on and fast.

The Neighborhood

Nestled up to Harvard and surrounds the neighborhood is quiet, well established, and beautiful with a lot of history and many famous residents past and current. Located in the neighborhood of Cambridge called Huron Village, the home is blocks away from the historic Longfellow house, Harvard, Radcliff, Leslie and the entire area exudes Victorian charm. There is easy and quick access to local stores, tree-lined streets, and it offers exceptionally easy access to all things Cambridge and Boston, no car required!

Best ways to get around town:

Close to Harvard and MIT. The home is a 15 minute or so walk to Harvard Square and Harvard University. An electric trolly/bus stops right outside and whisks you to Harvard Square and the T (trains) that run throughout Cambridge and Boston in 5 minutes. We have a hubway bicycle stand right outside on the plaza near the house.

Our home is located in the Huron Village neighborhood of Harvard. It is one of the more desirable neighborhoods in the entire Boston area with great gardens, historic sites, and easy access to everything. Our area has great local shops and restaurants to explore with a classic New England feel right in the middle of everything. The Longfellow house on Brattle is just a few blocks away. We have what is arguably the best wine, cheese, and specialty goods markets directly across the street from us, and just up the street is what we believe is the best pizza in the entire region. ( a Bold claim I know!!!! But, wait till you try it to scoff!)

Our home is a historic home. When it was built there was no electricity in local homes, the light bulb had just been commercially released the year before; there were no internet, telephone, TV, or cars. All of the materials to the house were brought to the build site by horse and buggy. Almost, everything was handmade, custom for every building. The floors are not going to be perfectly level, there may be some light creaking here or there, and some of the furniture is antique. She's a beautiful and tough house. Everything is plenty durable enough for a family, but, it does show some years of love and use. This is typical for the area for homes that focus on restoration vs renovation. There are multiple generations and time periods together in the same space spanning over 100 years. We do keep it very clean and are frequently recovering pieces.

Our goal is to ensure you, and we, have as close to a classic New England feel and experience in our home as possible, while still ensuring modern convenience. Most Victorians in the area only have 1 bathroom, unless they've been gut rehabbed. We are very fortunate in that we have 1.5 good sized bathrooms, which is rare, however, the home only has one shower/bath. We've frequently had groups of 10+ people, and folks haven't had a problem as we have endless hot water.

But, we did want to mention this as the 1.5 baths is is confusing for some people. We are always available to answer any questions and happy to answer any you may have before or after booking.

Family gatherings and the like are perfect, however, we cannot have loud rambunctions parties due to noise ordenances in the area and respect for our neighbors. At night the area is stunningly quiet.

About Steve

I love anything with a story behind it. I really enjoy any sort of cultural event and great conversation.

In Phoenix, we have been doing a green remodel of a home we recently purchased that was built in 1980. Our first step was insulation, power, and water quality. We are now 100% Solar powered, heavily insulated, and whole house carbon filtered. We have just finished a full renovation and have it up and running now to share for the season.

In Cambridge/Boston, we are working with a 124-year-old Victorian. It's beautiful with a lot of New England charm. Many homes of the type in the area are gut remodeled and turned into condos or modern style living spaces. We are working hard to maintain its hand-built Victorian charm while greening it's infrastructure where possible and protecting it for future generations. It's literally an antique we feel more as stewards than owners of.

We are now sharing these homes with others and using what we earn to further the renovation projects. We hope to meet people that will continue with us on this journey and get to enjoy things each time they come back as we further improve the spaces for all to enjoy.

Why Steve chose Observatory Hill

This is the home for anyone wanting visit Cambridge and Boston and have a classic New England experience and feel in a Victorian house.

Our home is not the home for someone wanting new, modern, and plastic. Though we have all the typical modern conveniences, the floor squeaks here and there, everything was handmade so isn't absolutely perfect, and space is laid out like a 125-year-old home (no open floor plan, but, more cozy spaces each with a purpose). That said it's warm, friendly, and oh so comfortable! We keep it super clean and provide everything you need to enjoy your stay except clothes and of course food (though we do provide great coffee!!!)

Quaint and fun

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I truly loved the property. It sits near wonderful grocery bodegas and is a fun home just to walk around. The bedrooms are ample and the amenities adequate for nights at home. Highly recommended and Steve was fantastic to deal with. We will definitely stay here when we return to Boston.

Fantastic Home!

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at this home. Steven, the owner, was there for every question and step of the way. We met his housekeeper Sarah who couldn't have been nicer! The house was extremely clean! Tons and tons of sleeping space, all clean and inviting. The location is great and convenient to wherever you want to go throughout Boston and areas. We would definitely return to this lovely home.
