About the host
Hosted by Elizabeth Doze
Member of the Clemetson/Goffe family originally from Port Maria. Our family has been in this area since at least 1805 which is how far back we can trace our ancestry. Joseph Clemetson was a British land owner who had at least 3 sons with his favorite slave, Nancy. The boys, James, Richard and Robert, along with their mother were given land and also slaves by Joseph along with their freedom. One of Robert's daughter's, Margaret married a free man of colour by the name of John Goffe. They had several children who later became banana businessmen, shipping magnates, politicians, attorneys-at-law and physicians. One son, Ernest, moved to England, married a white physician and had 4 sons. Alan, born in 1920 would later help to eradicate the world of polio along with his mentor, Alan Sabin. Another of Joseph and Nancy's grandchildren, Lt David Clemetson, while attending Cambridge University, in England, became the first man of colour to be commissioned as an officer in the regular British Army. He was killed in France in 1918 during WWI.
Why they chose this property
Our family would like to share Port Maria with you and would like to bring recognition to the great men and women who came from here but history has forgotten. Funds from our B&B will go towards establishing a museum, as well as donating to improve the health care of the local citizens here. See our website at coralhill . org.
