I am a military officer and pilot as well as a real estate professional. I have extensive travel experience and understand the nuances associated with creating a comfortable and memorable experience in our nation's capitol.
I am also a Washingtonian and live nearby. I have a very in depth knowledge of all that Washington DC has to offer and am happy to provide any recommendations to make your stay more enjoyable.
Since being built in 1880 numerous Senators, Congressmen, artists, and academics have all resided at what is now Hill Flats.
The building was previously used as a lecture hall and residence for scholars conducting research at the Library of Congress which is across the street.
Due to the buildings immediate proximity to national monuments, the National Park Service and Washington DC has designated Hill Flats a Historic building and has registered it under the Capitol Overlay and Fine Arts District. This designation ensures that all preservation is conducted under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol.
Hill Flats has been meticulously preserved while ensuring that it meets modern comforts.
If you are looking for character and historic charm there is no substitute.
Incredible architecture and historic charm in an unbeatable location.
Our family has just returned from a week long vacation in Washington DC and we were very pleased with our choice of places to stay. A list of Pros and cons:
The location CANNOT be beat. We were just around the corner from the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Library of Congress, a block from the Capitol Building and minutes from just about everything else someone would want to see. You won't need a car, plenty of bus stops and Metro locations are within easy walking distance. There are small markets for supplies and GOOD restaurants nearby! (We particularly liked "Good Stuff Eatery" for burgers and "We the Pizza").
The apartment was very clean and well maintained.
Directions to the location, and instructions for entry were clear and easy to follow.
Washer/dryer is available in the basement and that was quite handy!
If you have a third person, be aware the sofa-bed is broken, which we somehow missed learning about before attempting to open it ourselves. There was a very comfy Aero bed, but getting it setup and dismantled every day became kind of a hassle. Again, this will only affect you if you have a situation where you need a second bed!
The remote for the smart TV was broken, which was disappointing and left unaddressed during the stay, but the cable worked perfectly so at least we could watch some Olympics! This won't be a problem for people who don't plan to spend a lot of time in the apartment between things!
The pantry is rather bare. There's salt and pepper, but if you plan to do much cooking, you'll want to bring some things from home if you can, or visit the market. We have been fortunate to stay in other vacation rentals where more "non perishables" were available which was nice. It would have been nice to not have to buy cooking oil or any kinds of herbs/spices... but if you don't plan to cook a lot at "home" this won't be a problem! There were sufficient pots and utensils for cooking though, which was great.
Overall I would recommend this location, we had a very nice time and appreciated having such a great place to stay.
The location -- right behind the Library of Congress and two short blocks away from many restaurants (including fantastic take-out from Sweetgreen) -- was terrific. The instructions for accessing the apartment were also easy. We had one small problem with the kitchen sink when we arrived, but it was addressed promptly, despite the weekend. The apartment, itself, worked really well for us. The kitchen was minimally equipped for cooking -- small, but lovely -- and we made do. Our only quibble was the sofa bed, which really was unusable for more than a night and shouldn't be taken into consideration when planning a stay. The mattress is more than shot. Fortunately, the air mattress stored in the closet was a superb alternative and worked for us, since one of our family members couldn't make the trip. Although, originally, I believed the sofa bed and air mattress might both be utilized, that would have been impossible, given the space constraints. All in all, we were comfortable there and considered the apartment a fine choice for a week in D.C.
We loved being able to walk to everything. The Mall, Union Station and the Eastern Market were all walkable. Nearby cafes and grocery stores were also a big help. There were 4 in our group so it was a little tight but we did fine. Thank you!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Washington in June with our 7 year old grandson, due in large part to Mr. Pecar's great Brownstone, its location, and his excellent recommendations as to places to eat! Each day after returning from various exciting sights in Washington along with MANY other people, we would turn the corner and immediately be transported into the quiet atmosphere of a tree-lined neighborhood street with pretty gardens behind wrought iron fences. Our first evening we tried WE pizza which was delicious! The next morning after breakfast at Teds Bulletin (we highly recommend Teds and ate breakfast there each day), we walked back to the apartment and our grandson spied them tossing the pizza dough at WE for the day's pizza and stopped to watch. With an audience the chef was only too happy to perform, tossing the dough and flipping it over and over much to our grandson's delight! After attempting to walk everywhere our first day, we used Uber the rest of our stay and found it an efficient and economical way to travel. One of our outings was to the Library of Congress, just a few steps away, which we really enjoyed. If you are traveling with children be sure to check out the children's library there. It was great! Many thanks to Mr. Pecar for all the great suggestions and the use of his very clean and well-maintained apartment!
Our family of 3 stayed here and it provided the perfect location for us to walk to many venues. Nice neighborhood with excellent pizza place 2 blocks down. Very quiet street which was surprising considering how close it is to the Library of Congress, Capitol Building and Supreme Court. The owner was easy to work with and very professional. We enjoyed our visit.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful apartment. Although a little tight at times for three people, we managed quite well. We were provided with everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable. We would highly recommend this property for a great stay in DC.
