Spend some time off of the sand and in the comfort of this charming 1,300 square foot home, where you'll have plenty of room to stretch out and relax. Unwind with the family and watch a show on the living room's flat-screen cable TV, or take some personal TV time in the second and third bedrooms - each equipped with a cable TV as well.

While family and friends relax, head over to the kitchen to get a head-start on meal preparations for the night. Serve your culinary creation at the 8-person dining table to enjoy good food with great company.

As the evening comes to a close, climb up to the second-floor balcony for a bottle of wine with a view. You'll have a front-row seat as the sky begins to dim over the ocean - signaling the end to another day in Carolina paradise.

Venture back inside for peaceful slumbers in one of the 3 bedrooms. The kids can stay upstairs, on either the queen bed or twin bed in the balcony bedroom, while others head downstairs to relax on the queen-sized European pillow top mattresses in the first and second bedrooms.

From here, you'll be just a 2-minute walk from the sandy beaches of the Atlantic that Surf City calls home. Spend the day swimming on the local coast, or drive 20 minutes to the southern tip of the island to visit the unbeatable shores of Topsail Beach.

Drive less than 5 minutes over to the Surf City Pier to experience some local favorites! Grab some bait and tackle for a day of fishing, or skip the hard part and simply enjoy some seafood at Buddy's Crab House and Oyster Bar!

If you're looking for bigger fish to fry, drive 20 minutes to Sneads Ferry for deep sea fishing on the Gulf Stream. Take a boat ride out with Necessity Fishing Charters for a chance to catch Mahi, Wahoo, and Billfish under the all-knowing eye of Captain Ernie.

When you feel like getting out on the links, you'll be delighted to find that North Shore Golf Course is located just over the North bridge in Sneads Ferry.

Once again we totally enjoyed ourselves at Merlin's place. We spent a long weekend there Oct 19-22nd..the weather was unusually warm and we actually got a sunburn. We always feel as if we are "coming home" when we rent Merlins place. It's such a relaxing place to stay. Kathy McGinn

A fair price, great proximity to the beach and dog friendly - exactly what we purchased and paid for

  • 3 of 5

The property was accurately represented. The price for the week was fair. And they allowed us to bring our 2 small dogs (a necessity and a plus). This house has been there a long time - long before most houses in that area. It's a little long in the tooth, but it is clean and was a great spot for our family of 4 +2 for the week.

Proximity to the beach is great - one block up and one block over to public access. This stretch of the beach, like a lot of Topsail, is not slammed with people (one of the reasons we like Topsail a lot).

It would comfortably sleep 6-7 people (space-wise).

Plenty of parking.

AC worked and there are fans throughout so temperature was always comfortable.

They had cable which was nice when we settled in to watch a movie at night or during one of the two rainy days we had.

Washer and dryer in the home - worked great and was handy.

Big, new refrigerator! This was great as we like to eat-in mostly with only meal or two out during the week.

The house was clean (showers, floors, dishes, sheets, etc.). I've rented a number that were only cleaned in a cursory sense. Time was spent cleaning this property.

They allow pets - this was a big deal for us - not enough properties allow pets (let alone 2 dogs).

Plenty of dishes, sups, pots, pans, knives, etc.

Cons (more appropriately titled Recommendations):

The dishwasher is very loud. Run it when you leave the house for the day.

The washer is kind of loud, but with the door closed not too bad.

The oven/range is old and the oven takes a while to come to temp. It could stand to be cleaned thoroughly.

The beds are getting a bit long in the tooth. If it were my house, I would replace the mattresses with new firm box springs (the firm mattresses don't start sagging as quickly and should last a long time).

A couple of blankets would be a nice addition.

New towels would be nice. You can buy decent towels at Walmart for $3-$5 each. The ones in the unit were a bit skimpy.

All-in a good unit that was properly represented and delivered what we were looking for at the price point we were seeking. I would stay there again - though it would be nice to have new mattresses, towels and some blankets.

Beach house on Topsail Island

  • 3 of 5

Good location, 2 minutes walk from the beach. Small 3 bedroom house, 2 beds share a bath, bedroom on top floor has bathroom 1 floor down by kitchen ( bath is roomy also holds w/d). House is older, needs updating, especially the furniture and linens. That said, it was very clean and kitchen adequately stocked with cookware. Rental agent was very attentive when we had a small issue.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

Great location. Less than a block from public access to the beach and to a park for kids. There is also a small convenience store about two blocks away for a quick snack. There were plenty of dishes. Linens were provided. Fridge and appliances worked. There was a small blender, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, tea kettle, collinder, cutting board, pots pans, ect. Fridge was new and kept up with the ice demand. There were no beach chairs provided so you will need to bring those along with toilet paper. There was only one roll of paper towels but plenty of towels to use instead. You will need to bring your own beach towel if you don't want to use a bathroom towel. The house had hand soap, dish soap, and laundry soap (the laundry soap may have been left over from prior visitors). The house was very clear and neat upon arrival. Beds were comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.

Not pleasant

  • 1 of 5

I read all the reviews before booking this house thinking it would be ok but I was completely wrong. Smells awful when you walk in the door. Dirty carpets with what looks to be dog poop smeared in the carpet at the top of the steps. Some of the rails on the balcony are off just laying up there with rusty nails sticking up. I would suggest you take your own linens and comforters if you don’t want dog hair on them. Completely not worth how much they charge.

Owner's Response: Brandon, thank you for taking the time to leave this review. The homeowners take great care to provide an excellent experience to each guest they host - as evidenced by all of their previous glowing reviews. We are sorry to hear that your experience was such an outlier. The Guest Contact would have been more than happy to address any of your concerns had she been given the opportunity. Additionally, as an older beach home, a minor smell of must is unavoidable at times but the home is cleaned thoroughly for each guest. Lastly, the carpets have since been professionally cleaned. Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you the best of luck in your future travels. Best, the Evolve Team

Cozy, mostly.

  • 4 of 5

Our verdict was that it was cozy, despite things being a bit outdated. The pluses were that it was well laid-out, with some privacy if wanted, but also good communal flow, well stocked, convenient access to the beach and the playground was really good for us with small kids. The kitchen had more than enough cookware and there were some paper goods, salt, pepper, etc, things that make it a little easier to use without bringing your whole kitchen. The bad is just the age. I don't mind the older decor and furnishings, except when they are worn out. The couch probably needs to be replaced, the dishwasher sounds like a motorcycle, and they beds are all pretty squeaky. In this regard, it felt like you were staying @ grandma's rather than a rental property, but again, despite some wear, we were comfortable. The biggest issue I had was the requirement to wash all the linens before you leave. If you used all the beds and had towels, that's 3 loads of laundry you have to get done before shoving off @ 11. I suspect many people don't wash them and just make the bed. As others have mentioned, the upstairs bedroom is hard to maintain temperature control. It was 50's when we were there and it was still fairly warm up there. The other thing that stood out was the lack of an outdoor shower. Every place we've stayed in the area has one. We didn't need it because it was too cold to swim, but I think one would be easy to add and would probably be appreciated by the guests. There is a hose, but with little kids, it's nice to be able to strip them down in an enclosed shower.
