Arroyo Seco - Des Montes Area - with big sky mountain views! Half way between Taos and Ski Valley - 7 miles to town and 9 miles to Ski Valley

Montana Luz Hacienda “Mountain Light"

A signature Southwest residence, located in a ranching community eight miles from the Town of Taos and approximately eleven miles from Taos Ski Valley. The hacienda is within walking distance to Arroyo Seco on a rural road which passes an old Penitente Morada, cemetery and the back of Julia Roberts’ 50-acre ranch.

This cozy historic country home was built in the early ‘60s by sisters Sandra and Laurel Seth, Southwest adobe builders who developed a unique building architecture style and design. They are authors of a newly released book called “ADOBE!” - also known locally for their use of natural resources, hand-made adobes, brick, flagstone and timbered local wood.

The original 950 square foot structure was built on part of the Antonio Martinez Land Grant. Over the years, different owners have added their touches and more rooms to create what is currently a 3,000 square foot living space. Recently remodeled, the structure features a 400 square foot inner flag stone court yard, portals (covered patio's) for extended outdoor living with access from the kitchen, living room and northeast bedroom and an additional 2,000 square foot flagstone patio and connecting walkways surrounding the entire home.

Additionally there is an open ramada with a 12-jet hot tub, sauna, fire pit, several private patios and ample parking. The home is on approximately one acre of land, surrounded by an adobe and latilla (coyote fence) for additional privacy.

Large viga ceilings are prominent throughout the hacienda, as are Spanish corbels and lintels. To the immediate left of the front door is an open kitchen with talavera tile counters and custom shelving. An eating area is nestled in a corner with bench seating for eight people. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances: refrigerator / freezer with ice maker, electric stove featuring a ceramic surface and overhead microwave, dishwasher, disposal, double sink. Additional appliances include a coffee maker, blender, 4-slot toaster, crock-pot, griddle, hand mixer and flat ware for 16 people. You will find all the necessary kitchen tools to complete any gourmet meal - right down to the wine and brandy glasses.

In the dining room opposite the kitchen, a traditional kiva fireplace captures one’s eye. The center of this room also serves as additional table seating for four people. Of particular fascination is the raised window alcove banco (built in bed or bench) with latilla ceiling. The banco offers extended sleeping for 2 guests on a full size mattress.

An extensive entertainment center features a 27” (surround sound) satellite television, a video recorder with remote and a Sony AM/FM/CD cassette stereo system. A second television and video recorder are located in Bedroom 3. The four bedrooms are separated, two on each side of the living-dining- kitchen area, providing privacy and ease of movement throughout the house

At night, guests enjoy starry skies, glistening snow off the Sangre de Christo Mountain Range and the glowing valley lights of Arroyo Seco while relaxing in the 8 person 14 jet hot tub. The outdoor sauna is an additional amenity found in only a few Taos vacation rentals.

Montana Luz is ideal for families and groups desiring to be together under one very southwest roof for a true Taos experience!

Reviewer Comments:

We had a group of 8; 4 couples. The house was spacious enough for all of us. It was clean and well maintained. We enjoyed walking into the small town of Arroyo Seco. There are many good restaurants; The Taos Cow for breakfast, lunch and ice cream, Aceq, Sol food and Sabrosa were all really good. Loved the courtyard, and the hottub. The skies were incredible. We had some clear nights and some of our group were able to photograph the sky. I especially enjoy the quiet. One couple would have preferred a king bed. Not sure if there is room for a larger bed, but just a suggestion.

Reviewer Comments:

We had a great stay at the Montana Luz Hacienda, it is located away from the main town center and has great views of the mountains. We were a group of 5 and found the house perfect as a base for day trips and exploring. We did find the hot tub had so much chlorine that it was not pleasant to be in it, other than that we enjoyed our stay.

Reviewer Comments:

This place is quaint, and we had a nice time. But, there were clearly issues with deferred maintenance and lack of livability. The main issue was that during monsoon season, with lots of mosquitos outside, the house has essentially no screens on any windows. This made opening windows at night to cool things off a buggy experience. The promised "air conditioning" was a single swamp cooler in the living room. The promised two king beds existed, but the promised two queen beds were actually full size. Many electric outlets didn't work, the fan/light in the dining room dripped water during rain storms, the toilet in one room ran almost continuously and the WiFi only worked on one side of the house. That said, it does have it's charm, it's very quiet, beautiful grounds and a nice hot tub. We wouldn't go back, but we had a nice time there.

Owner's Response: Dear Gregory, Thank you for your business and for your time and interest to let us know of your disapointment at Montana Luz Hacienda. The record breaking rain this summer had a major impact on the bug population. Having no screens on the windows had to make it double trouble. This was the first mention ever regarding "no screens" and we will look into that that mystery. Oddly, many homes in Taos do not have screens. Iknow that sounds strange, but it is true. Given our high desert climate, bugs "generally" are not a problem. Montana Luz Hacienda has been with us for many years now and the 2nd 2 beds have always been Queens. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference by just looking. We will investigate and measure them and will make the appropriate correction if they are in fact not Queens. We regret not hearing from your group while in residence having complications. A maintenance person would have raced to the rescue. We hope you will ruturn to Premiere next year. Should you "dare to return" please call us immediately should there be any kind of disappointment. We promise, someone will appear at your door to remedy the situation.

Shockingly bad experience

  • 1 of 5

My 7 member family booked this place for a 1 week stay. We arrived in 2 groups (one group with a young child), both groups from out of state. This home looked and sounded great from write ups and reviews, and we were willing to pay what we now know was an exorbitant price for it. When a family member contacted the caretaker for the code to obtain the key, an offhand remark was made by the caretaker about a previous guest having seen a mouse, but we were assured that the problem was resolved by exterminators. When we pulled in that evening, we walked into a stench of rodent infestation. One chair smelled so bad that it was pulled out so that the rest of the house could be inspected. Rodent dropping were visible throughout the home and a dead mouse was found in a dirt space behind the washer/dryer area. One toilet was running constantly in a bedroom area and another shower stall floor was covered with spiders, both living and dead. We contacted the caretaker who did arrive quickly. However she tried to minimize the problems by saying that a previous guest had left a door open and that a mouse had entered. She than stated that living in this area meant having to deal with occasional infestations. Truthfully, the house was so filled with openings (and I was told the older home section had a mud roof) and no screens in the windows, any insect or rodent would have free access to enter. And this in an area of the country where the very deadly Hanta virus (spread by mouse dropping) is endemic! The conditions we found indicate to me a potentially serious rodent infestation, not just a single mouse. And it is beyond irresponsible for this place to have rented to anyone in that condition. A hazmat type cleaning should have been done before even considering renting it out. We feel our family's health was put at serious risk by even the short period of time we were in it. After contacting Primere Properties, we were immediately given a much newer, very clean, and over a thousand dollar less expensive home for our vacation. But this was a shocking and rough start. Also, this house is in no way handicap accessible for wheelchairs or the visually impaired since older sections are joined to later construction with step ups. This house is rustic and has a good exterior appearance, but I would NOT recommend it to anyone who values their health.

Very much enjoyed this rental. The location was great being half way between the ski valley and town. Great kitchen to cook in, or great restaurants are just down the road. The house is well taken care of, and the bedrooms were amazing. That had to be the best hot tub and sauna I have ever seen. We look forward to going back!
