About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain is an historic guest ranch situated just outside the charming village of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County. Located on the slope of Sonoma Mountain with breathtaking views of Sonoma Valley, The Ranch is unlike any other vacation rental in Sonoma because it combines luxury accommodations with a farm stay experience.

At the Ranch you have the opportunity to relax in 'The Cottage', a luxury, private 3-bedroom home while enjoying all the Ranch has to offer, including a luxurious salt water pool with panoramic valley views, seasonal organic vegetable garden, orchards, vineyard, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry patches, chicken coop and more. The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain is an ideal vacation destination for families or anyone interested in wine country living as it has been experienced by California families for over a century.

The Cottage at The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain was built in 1898 as the primary guest quarters for the popular Bruning's Summer Resort from the late 1800s to 1915. The Cottage is situated at the end of a private drive on twelve acres of rolling hills studded with oak trees, vineyard and orchards. Recently remodeled and professionally decorated in a comfortable agrarian chic style, the Cottage has an open and bright floor plan, gourmet kitchen with Viking Range, three bedrooms (including an old-fashioned sleeping loft), and two full baths.

The Ranch is conveniently located approximately one and a half hours from San Francisco and is accessible from downtown Glen Ellen as well as from Highway 101 via Rohnert Park or Santa Rosa.

2017 Wildfire Update: We are thankful and relieved to report that the Ranch escaped the terrible wildfires completely unscathed. It was a terrifying week as we watched the fires creep up Sonoma Mountain. On Friday October 13, the fire reached our neighbor's property. We are so grateful to our neighbor, Robert, who bravely chose not to evacuate and was on site to alert fire fighters to the threat. Thanks to their efforts, the fire was extinguished at the edge of our property line and without damage to our property, any neighboring structures or diminishing our beautiful views. Our hearts go out to those in our community who were not as fortunate.

A Day at The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain:

In the morning, sip your coffee or tea outdoors while enjoying the abundant wildlife including rabbits, wild turkeys, quail and more. For breakfast, collect you own fresh eggs from our pasture raised chickens, pick wild blackberries and gather seasonal fruit from our orchard.

In the afternoon, grab some towels, pack some cold drinks in the red wagon and follow the gravel path to the pool. While you splash and play, enjoy panoramic views of the valley. On your way back to the cottage, gather pick fresh fruit for your dessert (blackberries, figs, French plums and rhubarb grow along the path).

In the evening, enjoy a glass of wine on our view deck or take a walk through our ancient vine vineyard. For dinner, snip baby lettuce, pick heirloom tomatoes off the vine and gather other fresh vegetables and herbs from our abundant organic garden. Enjoy the sunset as you dine outdoors on our generous deck overlooking Sonoma Valley. Later, gather around the outdoor fire pit for marshmallow roasting. Before bed, pour a glass of Pinot Noir on the view deck and savor the starry silence of life in wine country.

About Kristin (Owner)

We are a professional family with two elementary school-aged sons. I am a 6th generation California native, raised on the San Francisco Peninsula. My husband grew up in Latin America. We were high school sweet hearts and have been together ever since. We live in Marin and we spend our weekends at The Ranch whenever we can. As our boys get older, we find it increasingly difficult to coordinate Little League schedules and birthday parties with our weekend getaways to Sonoma. This led us to decide to share The Ranch with you on VRBO.

Kristin (Owner) purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Kristin (Owner) chose Santa Rosa

It was love at first sight, really. Historic property, 12 fenced acres, two homes, barn, orchard, vineyard, pool, seasonal creek, valley views, oak trees and more. It was a project for sure but that too, drew us in. I have always had a passion for historic restoration and viewed this property as an opportunity to be a steward of an important piece of California history.

Also, our eldest son was nearly two years old at the time we purchased the property. We wanted him, and our second son who soon followed, to grow up loving the land and having the same kind of freedom we both had as a children to roam and explore. At the Ranch, children and grown ups alike have the opportunity to develop a sense of self sufficiency in nature by climbing trees, building forts, collecting eggs and picking the food they will cook eat for their meals.

What makes this cottage unique

The Ranch has been inhabited by Californians and our native predecessors for hundreds if not thousands of years. Based on stone artifacts found around the property, the land on which the Ranch now sits was likely a camp for the Costal Miwok Indians.

The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain (then 160 acres) was purchased by C.H.W. Bruning, a German immigrant, on June 17, 1876 for four thousand dollars. The property was owned by various members of the Bruning family, who sold or divided it until separate parcels over the years until we purchased the original home site in 2007. Around 1910, the Ranch shared a property line with Jack London's Beauty Ranch, as can be seen on maps on display today at Jack London State Park.

The Brunings operated a summer resort called either Waldrue or Brunings Summer Resort from the late 1900s until 1915. Guests traveled by train to Glen Ellen and were then transported via horse and buggy up the mountain. Wives and children would often come for the week while husbands would often travel from the City just for the weekend. Guest accomodations included several small cottages or platform tents, the largest being what we now call The Cottage on Sonoma Mountain. Dining and entertainment was offered in the main house which still stands near Sonoma Mountain Road. Guests can view the original guest book from Bruning's Summer Resort during their stay.

Prunes were the primary crop through the prohibition. One French prune tree remains from the original prune orchard. During this time the Brunings also tried their hand at poultry farming and raised white leghorn chickens. In 1946, the Brunings installed a concrete pool which served the triple purpose of recreation, fire protection and irrigation source. The pool allowed the Brunings to plant grape vines for the first time, the same gamay vines that grow today. Rumor has it that one year the family shipped the harvest to Chicago by train where the grapes were sold to Al Capone!

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a way to start our West Coast trip! We enjoyed the Ranch and your stylish and warm cottage tremendously; the scenery, the vineyard and the blackberries! We would love to come back!

This place is so special

  • 5 of 5

Hard to put into words how special and perfect this place is. This was my second stay here, this time with all family (6 adults, 2 babies) and everyone agreed that it was one of our best vacations yet. Indoors is perfect for cooking up the most delicious meals and visiting in the spacious living spaces, and outdoors the two fireplaces and heater makes for the coziest nights spent talking, laughing, and playing card games. Kristin and the caretakers of the property were so easy to communicate with. Everything was extremely clean and comfortable. Thank you for allowing our stay!

Awesome landlord, home was lacking

  • 2 of 5

The landlord Kristin was very easy to work with and cooperative. Unfortunately we had issues with the house, the biggest being seeing multiple mice in the house.

The property is beautiful and love the area but be prepared for a home that's equivalent to a 3 star hotel.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry that the cottage did not meet your expectations, Alex. We are proud to offer an authentic farm stay experience in our remodeled 120 year old vintage home, allowing our guests to vacation as Californians have done for over a century. The recent wine country wildfires, which burned within a few feet of the Ranch, unfortunately destroyed the habitat of local wildlife, including field mice. On a ranch, it is a part of everyday life to keep critters outdoors and that job has been a bit more challenging since the fires. We are vigilant about inspecting the home thoroughly between guests and use environmentally friendly control tactics whenever needed. Our on-site caretakers take pride in quickly responding to the needs of our guests as they did in your case. Thank you for the feedback, Alex. I do hope that you were able to find a vacation rental better suited to your particular tastes.

Beautiful but $$$

  • 4 of 5

The Ranch has stunning views and gardens, chickens etc. which make for a memorable experience but for the price it was listed I was disappointed at the size of the house, which can sleep 8 but 4 people are sharing an attic loft. In addition, there was a stain on the carpet leading up to the loft, as well as on the windowsill. As a family that likes to cook we were constantly needing to wash plates and dishes in between meals to keep going. Also, the kitchen did not even have 8 full dinner plates. The outdoors and great hot tub definitely make this a special place so I am sad not to give it 5 stars!

Owner's Response: Shirmila, I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for bringing the broken plate to our attention! It has been replaced and the Cottage offers a full set of dishes and tableware for entertaining groups of 8 adults. Next time, please don't hesitate to let our on-site caretakers know if anything is missing or not to your satisfaction during your stay. Please do visit us again soon!

Beautiful views, huge property, private!

  • 5 of 5

Kristin's house is on a narrow, curvy mountain road but when you arrive it is a private oasis of calm with beautiful views and everything you need to entertain yourselves and your kids! Outside there is a pool (gated and set away from the house), hot tub, fire pit with seating area, zip line, trampoline, chicken coop, veggie garden, orange and lemon trees. Inside is a gourmet kitchen stocked with everything you might need, modern furnishings. In short, do not miss this place! Thank you Kristin for your hospitality, we had a wonderful time!
