Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Glastonbury - Moonstone Cottage

Moonstone Cottage (1790) has views of Abbey grounds and Tor, sleeps 1-5.

MOONSTONE COTTAGE, GLASTONBURY This Georgian period cottage (1790) offers all you could ever wish for during your stay in Glastonbury. Ambient & rustic accommodation, wood burner, plenty of candles – with all modern essentials such as WI-FI, digital TV, Hi-fi and central heating. The kitchen is a delight with ceramic hob, fan oven, microwave and dishwasher, electric blender, coffee maker, coffee percolator and a great many extras. Views of Glastonbury Tor and majestic Abbey Grounds. Short walking distance from all attractions and High Street, 4 minutes walk from Chalice Well and Tor footpath.

FLEXIBLE ACCOMMODATION Sleeps 1-4 in comfort (max 6). 2 bedrooms (1x double + 1x twin bunk) plus double sofabed in the lounge. Sleeps 4 in individual beds. Ideal for couples, families or friends sharing - and we have had many solo travellers too.

PRIVATE PARKING FOR 1 VEHICLE

BOOKS / DVD and CD LIBRARY, free maps and information leaflets

WONDERFUL GARDENS The garden is divided into three sections, first the sun trap patio by the kitchen and conservatory, then lawn, shrubs, roses, swing seat and sun loungers, finally (through the grapevine arch), the third section with raised terrace overlooking the stunning grounds of Glastonbury Abbey. In autumn & winter the views over the Abbey ruins and grounds are spectacular. In the summer the trees partly obstruct the views, still offering wondering views of the duck pond, vast lawns and beautiful majestic trees.Seating for 6+ on each terrace. BBQ available.

SHOE-LESS COTTAGE, slippers available

CLEANLINESS GUARANTEED You are assured of a high standard of cleanliness. Our vacuum has advanced Hepa filtration, and mattress protector covers are aired between each guest and frequently washed! Pillows and quilts are synthetic. If you prefer 100% cotton sheets, just ask (we use both mixtures and pure cotton ones).

LOG SHED The Norwegian Jotul Wood Stove is so efficient, it heats up the whole cottage. Some guests prefer using the log burner only - others use the central heating only - or you can use them both. Logs are available to purchase during autumn and winter. Only seasoned hardwood logs are acceptable firewood, in case you wish to bring your own.

EXTRA DETAILS Moonstone cottage was renovated and sympathetically restored in 2010. It is kept freshly decorated and very clean. The upstairs has white painted original floor boards, the stairs and lounge are carpeted (low pile) and the kitchen has an easy clean hard floor, the conservatory / laundry room has ceramic tiles.

The Victorians extended this row of cottages in the 1800's and also added the gardens and a new boundary wall to the Abbey grounds. Today, the sofa leans against the original Abbey boundary. You can see how thick this wall is by looking at the photos.

Moonstone Cottage has a very special atmosphere, please see our own website for lots of recent guest feedback.

About Katarina Sonntag

We moved from London to Glastonbury in the milennium, in search of a more authentic existence. I have worked in hospitality for over 25 years in various roles; with a Tour Operator, running youth hostel, in hotels, owned a B&B, run a holiday flat in London, and finally Moonstone Cottage since 2010. I am passionate about creating a harmonious space, and my wish is to offer a memorable stay which inspires you on many levels. I strive for balance, both indoors and outdoors.

Katarina Sonntag purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Katarina Sonntag chose Mendip (Glastonbury)

Guests say they cherish the wonderful atmosphere at Moonstone, and many have felt inspired by the decor. Come and have a lovely, authentic experience in this period cottage from 1790. Due to the attention to detail, high level of cleanliness and the work that goes into maintaining both the cottage and its gardens - you are guaranteed great value for your money! The large number of regular guests will testify the standard never drops.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is very convenient, so close to all things Glastonbury, and backing to the Abbey. The cottage is so delightful and quirky, it always leaves an impression on those who stay. At the risk of sounding a little 'airy fairy' we can testify that because people love the space, and because it is kept so clean - the energy in the cottage is deep, happy and calm.

Generosity, beauty, care and attention to detail.

We were met with such warmth and tender welcoming and I felt touched to the heart with tea lights lit, soft music playing, homemade vegan apple crumble, bottle of wine and immaculate cleanliness in kitchen and bathroom. Rose quartz in the bedroom and beautiful pictures of nature and objects of beauty fed our senses. The private pretty garden set out with seating overlooking the abbey gardens was magical to be in as we sat together chatting in the warm air till late. This was a family retreat to nurse our feelings together and the cottage seemed to have a heart that healed us through this rite of passage. The heart of this cosy cottage nurtured and blessed by Katarina. I felt her care in every detail of beauty she has created. The fireplace with logs ready to burn and big DVD collection will be lovely in the winter to snuggle up with. We dreamt together of living like this and feel grateful we were held so comfortably in our overnight stay here. Thank you Katarina X

Moonstone is more than a home away!

  • 5 of 5

Moonstone Cottage is as lovely as its name. Just like Glastonbury there is a spiritual feel about the cottage and garden. Maybe it is because the garden wall is shared with the Abbey grounds. There is a patio table next to the wall which is perfect for enjoying a beverage morning or evening while contemplating the myths, lore, and history of Glastonbury. The cottage is scrupulously clean and well appointed. There is everything you need for a full meal, or a cozy evening of listening to music or watching a movie. Katarina has provided it all.

Moonstone is in a great location. The major attractions are within walking distance as are restaurants, grocery stores, pubs, and shops. There is no need for a car while in Glastonbury, but there is off the street parking infront of the flat if you drive. Glastonbury is only minutes away from Wells and convenient for day trips to the Jurassic coast and the Somerset country side. Katarina has an assortment of brochures and books about Glastonbury that will provide interesting information on the sights and sites. I was fascinated with Chalice Well, the Tor, the Abbey and especially the Arthurian legends and stories of Joseph of Arimethea. The holy thorn tree was even blooming while we were there.

Katarina and her family were very welcoming. We had chocolate and wine waiting upon our arrival. We enjoyed their company, but they honored our privacy as well.

I am looking forward to a return trip. There is no doubt we will stay at Moonstone Cottage.

Everything about Glastonbury and Moonstone Cottage was a delightful surprise.

Owner's Response: Ah, thank you - your review is treasured. We really enjoyed meeting you both and felt extremely privileged to have you stay at Moonstone! It would be fantastic if you made it back to Avalon one day. All things bright! N.B. The Holy Thorn Tree has sisters in both the Abbey and Chalice Well Gardens - sadly the 'original' on Wearyall Hill has suffered unfairly.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Moonstone Cottage is a home from home with a touch of the Glastonbury magic thrown in. Pleasant, comfortable and clean, what more could you want? Ideally positioned for all the famous attractions, off road parking and a beautiful, private garden, with a raised patio area at the rear overlooking the peaceful abbey grounds.

We have visited Glastonbury several times but this is by far the best accommodation we have stayed in. Fully recommend it.

Moonstone Cottage is a must!

  • 5 of 5

Moonstone cottage is a delightful choice for couple, friends and small families when staying in Glastonbury. The cottage itself is lovely, having everything that one needs for comfort and entertainment indoors. It is also perfectly situated, being a stones throw away from the Chalice Well and bordering the grounds of the Abbey. The cottage is more than a home from home. It is a must. The owners are wonderful, hospitable and sharing but also respectful of privacy. I would definitely go again, without a moments hesitation. This is at the top of my 'Glastonbury list'!

Repeat Visitor. Says it all !

I have stayed at Moonstone Cottage on several occassions.

The minute I walk into Moonstone I feel relaxed and comfortable.

The Cottage is a period cottage which has been tastefully and sympathetically decorated by the thoughtful and considerate owner. From the wood burning stove in the lounge to the delightful rear garden which backs onto and has views of the Abbey grounds.

Moonstone is ideally located, being only a couple of minutes flat walk to Glastonbury High street with its shops, restaurants and pubs.

On a practical note, there is an off street parking area at the front of the cottage, so you will not need to use your car during your stay.

If you dont want to eat or drink out in Glastonbury, there are 3 supermarkets in the locale where you can buy supplys, and then cook in the well equipped kitchen and eat in the dinning area or on an outside table in the garden.

The owner is always most welcoming and helpful. She always provides a number of up-to-date leaflets, booklets and maps of Glastonbury and its attractions for guests.

The ambiance of Moonstone Cottage compliments the charms of Glastonbury perfectly.

I would recommend Moonstone Cottage to friends and relatives of all ages.

Glastonbury has long served as the Mecca of the British Isles, representing all faiths and traditions, an eclectic and interesting town, steeped in history, myth and legend. At the last count, the town was said to have at least 70 different faiths - apparently the highest concentration per capita, in the world(?) Allegedly the burial place of King Arthur (just accross the stone wall at the end of the garden of Moonstone Cottage), at Glastonbury Abbey. This Abbey was once the largest and most important in the British Isles, and an important place of pilgrimage.

Before the sea water was pumped off the levels to provide fertile agricultural land, Glastonbury was 'The Isle of Avalon', lower parts of this town were once under water. Glastonbury Tor is the famous landmark of the area, visible from afar accross the level landscape of Somerset. The Chalice Well gardens and Rural Life Museum are major visitor attractions, and Glastonbury High Street is lined with cafes, restaurants and quirky shops.

The cathedral City of Wells lies just 5 miles away, and shoppers will delight in the variety offered at nearby Clarks Village. Also nearby are Cheddar with its famous gorge and caves - not to mention cheese, Wookey with it's famous caves and a whole host of other interesting towns and villages.
