Kootenay is located on Numa Peak, more than 20 pristine acres less than 3 miles from the Bowman Lake Entrance of Glacier National Park. Kootenay is 20 miles off the grid and it is powered almost completely by solar energy. Water is supplied by a well on the property. The well is fed by mountain streams with the water table below. There is only one property, rarely used, between Kootenay and the source of all the water. Additionally,we have gone 'green' wherever possible. There are 4 log cabins (Kootenay, Kintla, Ptarmigan and Siyeh) each with spectacular views of the peaks of Glacier National Park. Kootenay has 2 bedrooms each with a queen bed, full bath, full kitchen, dining area and living area. There is a large front deck looking into the park with table and chairs.The master bedroom also includes a private sitting area as well as a private deck facing into Glacier National Park. Haycreek runs year round and is situated directly behind the cabin. It is home to the endangered Bull Trout.

About Mary Bassingthwaighte

Mary worked in Glacier National Park at Many Glacier Hotel from 1977-1980. Finally, in 1992 our family was able to move to Missoula, MT. On one of our visits to Glacier National Park, a small 'For Sale' sign was spied on the side of the road. We have now spent 20 years growing as a family in the North Fork Valley. Kira, Ian and Tristan have spent many wonderful days here during their childhood. As their mother, exposing this pristine nature and beauty felt so natural and necessary. Now in her twenties, Kira and I are working together to share our spectacular gem with all of you. Pictured here is the original family cabin which we recently remodeled and now stands as the Kootenay Cabin. Since this picture was taken, we have also expanded and attached a lodge area for our family to stay when we visit. We can assure you that although the family cabin and the Kootenay cabin are attached, the rental is separated from ours by a locked hallway and remains very private with its own entrance and great distance from the other three rental cabins. The addition was started as a way to have room for the kids when they returned with their families. Then the idea of having a place that allowed other people to experience the beauty of the North Fork Valley and Glacier came about. So here we are today trying to share this rare beauty with the rest of you.

Numa Peak has some of the most fantastic views of the mountains to be found even up in the North Fork Valley. People slow down as they turn our corner on the North Fork Road as the peaks come into view. The historic Mecantile in Polebridge, 1 mile down the road, offers the basic needs to campers, tourists and backpackers. It is internationally known for its' baked goods of all types (truth be told, the huckleberry turnovers are the real reason we bought the property in 1992…) Polebridge is also home to the Northern Lights Saloon. Excellent fare is often accompanied by music played by locals and visitors from around the world.

What makes this cabin unique

Numa Peak has beauty and solitude but is just around the corner from all that the North Fork has to offer. Haycreek sings the music of mountain streams all year long. Bowman Lake and all its splendour is less than 10 miles away. The main entrance to Glacier National Park is less than one hour by car and the drive itself is stunning. Beyond the views and location, our 4 cabins have been built to offer the most comfortable and relaxing stay. You may be drawn outdoors by the adventurous opportunities, but even a day at the property would be a day well spent.

  • Located on the second floor and close to both bedrooms. Please note: We are on a solar system. It does not allow us to have any appliance that requires a sudden burst of energy. It will shut the entire system down. Therefore there is no ability to use hairdryers or curling irons.

    Second Bedroom - 1 Large Double Bed , 11' x 11' cozy room, with wooden floors and aspen ceiling.
  • The master bedroom is 27' by 15' with 2 foot knee walls. We have used a beautiful aspen accents for both the ceiling and walls as well as log peak. With large windows, you have a stunning view of the western peaks of Glacier National Park. You can see them from the bed, the seating area or your private balcony. There is a full closet and luggage space provided as well. The second bedroom has the same beautiful wood work, but is a bit smaller at 11' by 11'. We have put a closet and storage space in the corner to ensure ample room in this bedroom. It is cozy and tucked in the eaves of the Kootenay cabin.

Numa Peak has four cabins and all are handcrafted by local builders with many of the logs coming from the property itself. Kootenay is the original family home and largest of the four. It is attached to the owners lodge which now functions as the family cabin when we are visiting, but we can assure renters that their space will remain private and secluded from us. You will have a separate entrance and the cabins remain separate via an empty hallway and locked door. Please note that we are literally off the grid and power is provided by 2 large solar panels, an inverter and battery system with backup generator, and propane. We are trying to be as sustainable as possible, using the sun, wood from the Numa Peak property, energy efficient equipment, and providing jobs to the North Fork locals! Events of any type require permission from Numa Peak. There are associated fees and required back-ups to ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible in this rustic, off-the-grid setting.

Polebridge duplex

The covered deck and A-frame is the unit (it is a duplex with other unit being the owner's unit) we stayed in. It was comfortable and had the necessitities we needed. Easy access to Bowman Lake and Glacier National Park. Access to the home on dirt roads were in great condition. Be sure to get groceries and supplies before heading out to Polebridge.

Great Stay

We stayed here for four nights and it was great. Sam and Alex take care of the place and they were very helpful. The cabin was spotless when we arrived. It’s about a mile or so from the Polebridge Mercantile, which is convenient. The pictures are accurate but really don’t capture the great view out the front, and the stream out back is a nice feature too. Although it’s off the grid, it’s really not apparent when you are there. There is free wifi, but it’s pretty slow. The master bedroom is really large and has its own deck and a stunning view. The second bedroom is a bit of a squeeze, and no windows to boot, but it’s workable. Before we ventured out one day, we asked Sam if there was a place we could have a campfire to make some s’mores. When we got back in the afternoon, they had cleared a whole fire pit, set up stumps around it for seats, and even built the logs up so all we had to do was light it.

tranquil, serene, idyllic, beautiful

I mostly remember sitting in the sunshine outside on a chair in the morning, yoghurt with fruit on my lap, book open, but staring at the friendly squirrels and the view, sitting really still because deer were grazing closeby (almost touching distance). I would love to live in a place like this.

Downsides were the drive into the park, which was still some ways away (but then, we're from a tiny country, so that complaint is really our own). The road to Glacier is a scenic one, so really I have nothing to complain about.

We've visited a lot of places on that roadtrip so the fact that I remember this place so well is very positive.

The landlady was very kind, answered everything we needed to know, was very helpful and also interested in us as persons, which I personally like. She kept her distance mostly so we could enjoy living in the cabin for a couple of days. It felt like she was a friendly neighbor who would help out anytime you needed her.

I also remember driving away the last day and remembering someone saying something about Bearclaws/Turnovers in the guestbook, so we decided to check it out. DIVINE. Do it! Go get them and remember them for the rest of your life. It's a cute bakery in the middle of nowhere with superfresh things. I was happy we couldn't wait to taste them because otherwise I would not have realized how fresh they were. I would like to come back one day just for those Huckleberry Bearclaws. Sigh...

Overall, a wonderful stay.

Remote, quiet, clean and beautiful!

We decided to book a trip to GNP because it was one of my favorite places to go as a child and I hadn't been back since. I wanted to share this special place with my husband and girls but didn't want to stay in the congested areas with all the other tourists. So with many hours of research, I came across this beautiful cabins in the woods and man, we couldn't have been happier! The inside was clean and had everything we needed to feel comfortable but the outside was the highlight for us. We would sit on the front porch for breakfast and dinner and watch deer play on the feild with its young doe. We saw 2 fox and countless exotic birds. It's about a 45 minute drive (along a dirt road at time which the kids loved) to the heart of West Glacier and the drive is gorgeous! We saw almost no cars every time we went to and from the cabin. Only beautiful mountain views and the occasional deer.

We are planning another trip out this summer and will definitely be booking this again!

Amazing Stay!

What an amazing place! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Polebridge is an amazing place. It is so unique. We loved going to the Northern Lights Saloon each night and the Mercantile in the morning.

The cabin is actually not the full structure, but the right side of the cabin with the deck below and above. Was a great place. We loved sitting out on the deck in the evenings and waking up to a view. It was rather smokey when we were there, so we only benefitted of the full view on one day... but that view was breathtaking.

In short, highly recommend this cabin and a stay in Polebridge if you are in the area. It is a great base to explore Glacier (with a few park entrances that avoid the entrance booth). The road to get here is mainly dirt, but a vast majority of it has been treated, so it is (or was) very smooth. Can enter through the park to avoid a good section of dirt road (which was actually the roughest part).

Beautiful location, great vacation!

My family rented three of the cabins at Numa Peak for a group vacation. The main cabin has a spacious, open floor plan, along with a great covered porch that made a great meeting place for everyone, even when it was raining. Everyone cooked, ate and played games at the main cabin, it worked very well. We loved that the Polebridge area is calm and peaceful and yet close to Glacier Park with all it has to offer. Everyone indulged at the Polebridge Merc and some rented water toys to take to nearby Bowman Lake. I would recommend this property to my friends.

Numa Peak is located on 21 acres of beautiful forest. We have our main Kootenay cabin located at the south side of the property with a small, clear, freshwater creek running behind. Our three smaller cabins, Kintla, Ptarmigan, and Siyeh are situated at the north side of the property in the meadow facing some of the stunning mountains of West Glacier. The summer offers so many activities in this remote valley. Whether you are interested in taking a canoe out on the water, hiking through the mountains, fishing, hunting, swimming (only recommended for those with thick skin!), camping, bicycling, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, driving the Going-to-the-Sun road for some of the most spectacular views in the Northwest, or simply watching for wildlife, this is the perfect spot to do it all. We are located just 10 miles from one of the entrances to Glacier National Park and less than one hour driving to the main entrance. Beyond the benefits of Numa Peaks location, our cabins are designed for you to enjoy a cozy, quiet, and serene getaway. Each cabin has two bedrooms, one full bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and living room with a wood stove, and a beautiful front porch facing Numa Peak, our namesake. We have picnic tables outside of each cabin and an outdoor grill for cooking during those beautiful summer evenings. If you find yourself relaxing outside after the sun goes down, the stars are magnificent. And if you're really lucky, the aurora borealis may show itself, maybe.
