Space 420 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Plan a romantic getaway to this 1-bedroom, 1-bath vacation rental cottage in Amherst, Maine. Nestled on 50 acres of beautiful farmland with 1,700 feet of frontage along the Union River, this charming cottage offers ultimate privacy, scenic hiking trails, and a prime location, just minutes from a community forest and the quaint town of Amherst.

Bedroom: Queen Bed

Pure serenity greets you the moment you step foot on the peaceful 50-acre tree farm, nestled off the beaten path. The property overlooks part of the Union River Valley, and the view to the west is a beautiful, wooded ridgeline of mixed forest. Sit back and relax next to the river and enjoy the views while listening to the soothing sound of water tumbling over ‘Captains Rips.’

Relax with your loved one around the fire pit, and watch as the sun sets on the west-facing ridge, giving the farm its name, ‘Sundown Falls.’ Fire up the grill for a cookout under the sparkling stars, and take a seat at the picnic table beside the cottage for an al fresco dining experience.

When the night gets chilly, wander inside the cozy cottage to be welcomed by inviting decor and calming colors. Cuddle up on the couch in the living area and warm up by the propane fireplace.

Make your way to the fully equipped kitchenette to make a tasty dessert, and afterwards, get ready for bed by tossing your clothes in the laundry machines and retreating to the charming bathroom with a walk-in shower. When you’re all cleaned up and ready for bed, rest your head in the queen-sized bed in the colorful bedroom.

This property is truly an outdoor enthusiast’s dream! Walk right out of the cottage’s front door to take scenic trail walks all throughout the property.

When you’re ready to pull yourself away from the privacy and solitude of the property, find even more beautiful wooded hikes in Amherst Mountains Community Forest, just a short drive away. The area also offers canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and miles of ATV/snowmobile trails.

Golfers, be sure to bring your clubs, as this property is just down the road from the 9-hole golf course in Clifton, the next town over.

Find the perfect souvenir in the town of Amherst, home to numerous stores, like the Peruvian Link, a boutique shop that specializes in alpaca fashions imported from South America. If you’re searching for good brews and food, check out Airline Brewing Company, which serves great eats and of course, its own craft beers.

Additionally, this home is just 30 minutes east of Bangor, a city with numerous restaurants, concerts and a casino. The cottage is also just 30 minutes south of Ellsworth, known as ‘The Gateway to Down East Maine,’ where there are many shops, pubs and an abundance of summer activities. Furthermore, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are east of Ellsworth, about an hour drive from the cottage.

Perfect vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

I need to start the review with a disclaimer: due to a medical emergency at home, we were forced to leave this idyllic spot after only 2 days, but what we did experience was exactly what we hoped for. Although you can hear some airport noise, especially at night, it's only evident if you are outside listening for it. Other than that, the only thing you can hear are crickets, squirrels, birds, and the occasional deer walking through the woods. The Union River is about 1/4 mile walk down through the woods, and although it was low during our stay, we SO enjoyed walking along its banks and out over the exposed rocks. We spent several hours our first day just exploring, taking pics, and sitting quietly on the rocks by the waterfall watching the wildlife. The cabin is perfectly appointed and while small, had everything we needed to be comfortable. Grace takes great care to make sure everything is clean and neat and well-stocked. We enjoyed the fire ring the one night we could. The cottage is situated on a private drive extension, and while you can see the owners' home up on the adjacent property, the cottage is completely secluded, ringed in front with grassy knolls where the deer came each morning and evening and in back with thick Maine woods. We had to leave before we could execute our vacation plans, but the cottage is fairly central to many areas of interest: it's about an hour to Bar Harbor and MDI, it's about 30 minutes or so to Bangor and several interesting museums out that way, a drive to Brunswick, Canada and Campobello Island where FDR spent his summers is about an hour northeast, and Mt. Katahdin, where the terminal/starting point of the Appalchian trial is. If you want to drive just a bit farther to the quaint town of Freeport (2 hrs), you can visit the L.L. Bean flagship store. We were very pleased, even with our truncated experience, and are excited to return!

Very cozy!

  • 4 of 5

Very cozy and comfy cottage, we really enjoyed ourselves during our weekend stay and the owner was very nice and accommodating. We lost power during our stay and he was very quick to answer and fix the issue. Very nice property we loved the fire pit, if you’re looking for a quiet weekend getaway this is the spot. I gave it 4 starts only because we missed having a tv at night other then that just PERFECT!

5 Star Cozy Maine Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking for a place to stay for our 1st anniversary, we had just about given up hope when we found this property and booked it. After a long drive into northern Maine, we arrived at the cottage.

From the moment we got there we loved it! Our hosts, Stan and Grace, made sure we had everything we needed to and we felt very welcome. The house is on a beautifully landscaped property with a view looking out over the hills, and a trail leading down to a river. It was very clean and comfortable. Over our two day stay we visited a nearby nature reserve and walked the trails there, walked down by the river, and built a campfire and did some stargazing.

If you are looking for a low-key vacation to get away from it all this is the perfect spot. I highly recommend!

quiet, private, serene cabin in the Maine woods

  • 5 of 5

This cabin, tucked into the Maine woods, is the perfect place to spend some quiet time. Well stocked, warm (we were there in middle of winter), and private. The owners even provided snowshoes so that we could get out and enjoy the woods. Highly recommend.
