About the property

Villa Bergi is over 300 years old authentic Istrian house that was owned by the same family for centuries. This luxurious stone villa is situated in the small village called Damijanići. It is a small charming village in which picturesque landscape Villa Bergi perfectly fits. The Villa has been recently restored in accordance with the tradition of building and life of our ancestors. It is modern equipped, and as a kind of combination of luxury and indigenous is open for our dear guests. Ten people can comfortably enjoy in the luxury accomodation of villa, beautiful landscape and intimacy of a typical Istrian village.

Through the history, the members of household lived of any craft and agricultural activities. For example, one descendant was widely known for its carpentry. He made nearly all the wood stuff needed for work in the field but also for the household, and some of these items still adorn the interior and the surrounding of villa. On the house wall there is a carved stone head, above which stands the inscription San Giacomo (St. James). It is still not known who placed the carved stone head on the wall of the house, but it is assumed to be installed during the construction of the house. There is a possibility that the owner respected and especially believed in Saint James the patron saint, and vowed to protect the house and the entire household. As Saint James is considered to be the patron of travelers and pilgrims, it is possible that the builder of the house was also the traveler and the pilgrim who settled in this small Istrian village. Therefore, there is no wonder that the house is today meant for travelers and guests who staying there can feel the positive energy. Staying in a villa gives the impression of living in the past times…

The natural white stone, larch, tipical Istrian wood, terracota and bricks, were used in design and restoration of villa, all processed in the traditional manner. Villa extends over 300 m² of living and 2000m² of environmental space.

Two large double door take you from dining room to the terrace, and from the living room to the terrace and garden.

The old stone stairs, looking the same as centuries before, lead to the floor. Our ancestors used them ones, and we are still using them…There are four bedrooms on the first floor, approximately from 15 to 25 sqm, all renovated and furnished with natural materials like stone, larch and Istrian oak. They are looking almost the same as centuries ago when the owners' ancestors spent time there. All rooms have twin beds, and the biggest has an additional bed. Each room has a private bathroom with shower and one has a jacuzzi. Also, one room has an exit to the terrace with a small Istrian stone well.

Villa has a spacious courtyard in which there are native plants and trees. Garden is surrounded with two covered terraces, approximately of 150 sqm of area. On the covered summer terrace, which is about 30 sqm large, someone can relax and enjoy in the view of the nearby greenery, and in the evening someone can enjoy a glass of our good Istrian wine. The other covered terrace, of 70 sqm area, there is a fireplace and grill features, a large wooden dining table, outdoor stone sink and the ability to listen the music while enjoying breakfast, outdoor barbecue or a relaxing evening…Close to the large terrace there is a swimming pool, 10 x 5 m size, from which the view extends to the centuries-old trees. Damijanići is only 2 km away from Žminj, Istrian town with rich history as evidenced by historical monuments, churches and monuments. The old curved country road takes you from Žminj to Damijanići, leading you through the rich greenery, threes of ladonja and murva (mulberry), rich fields and vineyards.

The historical remains confirm that there has been life on a strategic hill where Žminj is situated, since prethistoric times. According to the existing literature, there has been a considerably large settlement during the Bronze Age already, while the archaeological excavations indicate to the animacy and continuity of the town during the Middle Ages. Among other things, the remains of medieval walls today are embedded in the walls of houses and garden fences.

It is assumed that Slavs settled in the Žminj during the 7th century. Graves from the IX and X century evidence about their retention and settlement in Žminj, as well as that it has been one of their important village.

From the half of the XII century Žminj was the part of the Pazin County. In those times it represented one of the most developed part of county. Žminj was known and had reputation of trading place rich of agricultural products because of fields and orchards, rich with wine because of vineyards, but also rich with forest resources, although exploited by the Venetians. After the fall of Venetian Republic Žminj was under the rule of France, but also Austria.

At that time this town passed through an even bigger prosperity by building roads, opening schools and even more powerful development of trade and traffic. The history of Žminj is rich indeed, which is evidenced by monuments such as the parish church of St. Michael, the gothic chapel of the Holy Trinity, or early gothis Chapel of St. Anthony from the XIV century, but also with narration among generations which enabled stories, traditions or recipes to be continued in lives of future generations.

Throughout the history, this area is known for no wetlands, that is why it was spared from the disease that ravaged Istria. It was also know for a healthy climate, clean air, clean water and soil, which were kept until today.

In Žminj and it surroundings there are several restaurants and agritourisms that serve traditional dishes, istrian prosciutto, cheese, various dishes with truffles, olives and istrian wine like Malvasia and Teran. There are also several stores, a market with fruit and vegetable from farmers from the nearby villages, hairdresser, mechanic. Every other Wednesday there is a real village fair where you can buy everything, including the excellent Istrian wine, honey, olive oil... There is also Bartulja, or Day of St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of Zminj, the largest folk festival in Istria, which is usually held on last Sunday in August, and visited by up to ten thousand people.

Žminj is located in the heart of Istria, and its position is ideal for those who want to travel in the region. The importance and status fo traffic intersection Žminj has since the Iron Age because they were already roads leading to larger existing settlements, and these roads, with only small modifications, kept up to date. Therefore, if staying at Villa Bergi you will be just twenty kilometers away from famous destinations on the coast like the nearest Rovinj, Bale, Poreč, Vrsar, Rabac, National Park of Brijuni, Rt Kamenjak in Premantura, Livade (Buzet). You have to drive only few hours to visit beauty of Kvarner – Opatija, or island of Cres and Krk, beautiful Plitvice Lakes, even Venice and Trieste in Italy.
