About the property

Light and airy apartment in medieval stone town-house ( 1524 )

Le Cantou is set in a beautiful 16 century stone town-house. Located on the second floor, this apartment offers you the chance to enjoy the area of Sarlat by foot and by car. This beautiful apartment itself is bright and airy with high ceilings. The bedroom is located in a cosy alcove and has a very comfortable double bed, two bedside tables, lamps and a chest of drawers. The living/dining area ' centre piece' is a beautiful stone fireplace. Located in the living area are two armchairs, two foot-stalls and a coffee table. In the dining area there is a table and 4 chairs for the wonderful meals you can cook from market produce. The kitchen is located in another alcove and is equipped with a fridge with an ice box compartment, oven and hob, washing machine and coffee machine. As you leave the apartment you step right into the main square of medieval Sarlat, along with its cobbled streets, little shops, restaurants, superb market and art galleries.

Things to do:: The Dordogne region provides an fascinating array of sites and activities

It houses the most magnificent and interesting sites of the Palaeolithic era in Europe with troglodyte shelters and caves, the most famous being Lascaux , cave paintings of 15,000-year-old galloping horses, reindeer, bison, and ibex. Although the original is now closed Lascaux 2 is equally interesting, also Font de Gaume is worth a visit.

From fairytale Château Milandes, to the flamboyant Hautefort and fortresses like Castlenaud to Bastides, like Domme & Belves, also pretty villages set into the cliff faces – La Roque Gageac and Beynac. also the fabulous gardens of Eyirgnac and Marqueyssac , giving you plenty of sites to see, whether by car, bike, foot , canoe or Balloon you will experience a holiday of memories.

Restaurants, cafes and markets are a speciality..In this region you will find Duck everywhere on the menu. Among the markets which have an array of fresh produce you will find:

Truffles, foie gras, wild mushrooms like cepes, girolles and morels, also walnuts, confits (meats preserved in fat) and fine country meats, chestnuts, strawberries, wines, liquors and brandies…and of course the famous cheeses..

So after your hectic day of sightseeing, relax in the centre of Sarlat, watch the world go by knowing you are only a few minutes walk from your apartment 'Le Cantou'

The Dordogne enjoys a more settled weather pattern than UK or Ireland, although it does have rain enriching the region with green fields in the winter months. It has a varied temperature, starting off cool in the mornings and heating up as the day goes along…layers are the best clothing to bring. In the summer-time the average temperature is around 30 ‘C..

The nearest airport is Bergerac, with airlines Ryan air and Flybe.

The new Brive Airport has flights from London with CityJet. Slightly further away you can get flights into Limoges, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Rodez..

From Calais the car journey is around 10 hours.

There is a train service from Paris to Bordeaux, then change to Sarlat. There is also a service from Paris to Souillac, then a shuttle bus to Sarlat.

In Sarlat there are car hire services such as Europcar, which is in walking distance from Sarlat train station.

Notes:
Le Cantou is set in a medieval town house in the centre of historical Sarlat. Unfortunately there is no parking in the historical centre, but there is free parking 200 metres away. The apartment is on the second floor of a stone spiral staircase, and has a lovely view of the courtyard below and the roof tops above. The apartment has 3 huge windows and a fan so plenty of ventilation. The Tourist office is 2 minutes walk away from the apartment..where you can browse through the delights that the region has to offer. During the summer months, Sarlat is bustling with festivals of music, theatre and the street theatre, and of course not forgetting the Film Festival in November, the truffle festival in january, the duck festival in february ......

An excellent property!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Sarlat was spent in this perfect property which could not have been better. The property is well equipped, immaculately clean and comfortable and we feel blessed to have found it! The owner, Emanuelle, was extremely helpful, he left us to our holiday but we knew he was there on the end of the phone if we needed him.

The property is conveniently located right in the Centre of the medieval town of Sarlat. The town is buzzing and steeped in history. There are lots of wonderful restaurants to choose from and lots to see in and around Sarlat.

We would highly recommend the property and will definitely be returning some time in the future!

Ideal location

  • 5 of 5

This spacious, lovely apt. has all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. It is perfectly situated in the middle of the medieval town, walkable to everything, steps away from the twice-weekly market, shops and restaurants, and still is very quiet.

Emmanuel was very responsive to our correspondence and met us on our arrival and helped us move in. We highly recommend this apt. for your stay in Sarlat.

Beautiful apartment in heart of Sarlat

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is perfect for a week-long stay in Sarlat. It is esthetically pleasing and has a terrific location just steps from a number of good restaurants. Although it has a cute little kitchen, we never used it because it was so convenient to eat out. The bed was extremely comfortable and the two chairs with reading light were great.

Perfect elegant. Great location. Owner provided important details for great stay

  • 5 of 5

This property is a short walk from the visitor center in the heart of mid evil Sarlat. It’s well apportioned with the small but very functioning kitchen, the by weekly market is literally steps from the front door. The Wi-Fi could not have been better. There was a nice television that we never turned on... you need to be able to walk up two flights of stairs so being in good shape is a must for this apartment. If you like the idea of staying in our home that has been lived in for hundreds of years but has all the modern conveniences of today’s France, this is the place to be! The owner, Emanuel, spent an hour with us on our first day to show us his booklet of favorite restaurants and other shops, leaving the booklet that detailed everything for easy access. . Parking is a few blocks away, so again, if you like to walk a bit, this is a wonderful location. We highly recommend the city, this location, this apartment, and Emanuel.

Excellent Apartment

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay in this apartment. The location is perfect. The apartment itself is very roomy, yet feels cozy. Beautifully decorated, lacking nothing. The owner, Emmanuel, could not be more helpful and is available whenever needed. We believe this to be the best value for the money in all of Sarlat.

Exceptional Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

This apartment exceeded all our expectations! Emmanuel is an excellent host providing us with amazing restaurant recommendations, all cleaning products (laundry detergent included) and a well-stocked kitchen. Emmanuel helped carry our luggage from our car (parked several blocks away) up the 2 flight spiral staircase to the apartment. He also made sure we knew how to operate the appliances. As a bonus, Emmanuel gave us a lovely bottle of red wine. The location of this apartment could not have been more ideal, right in the center of the old medieval city. Sarlat is an excellent hub for all tourist attractions in the Dordogne region including the prehistoric caves, canoeing, touring the Beau Villages and Castles, and shopping at the outdoor market. We look forward to returning to this apartment in Sarlat.

One thing we would like to make clear, as VRBO has it listed incorrectly; there is wifi at the apartment. You do not need to go to the Tourist Information Office to access wifi.

Sarlat has been described as 'the jewel in the crown' with its medieval centre restored to its 17th century magnificence with such perfection that it is lit at night by gas lamps and is the set for a myriad of French movies. There are numerous 'plus beaux villages de France' in the area including Beynac. La Roque-Gageac, St-Leon-sur-Vezere, Domme, and Belves and the town markets are some of the finest in France, with many designated as 'marches de France.' .

The natural beauty of the area can be explored on the many well marked hiking and bike trails or by renting kayaks or canoes all along the Dordogne and Vezere rivers. A trip to buy groceries along the country lanes through the forest, over the hills and along the rivers is a treat in itself. With your apartment tucked into a charming medieval alley off the main square you can avail of the superb market, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Other Activities: Canoe/kayak, Ballooning, rock climbing, caving
