Things to do:: The Dordogne region provides an fascinating array of sites and activities

It houses the most magnificent and interesting sites of the Palaeolithic era in Europe with troglodyte shelters and caves, the most famous being Lascaux , cave paintings of 15,000-year-old galloping horses, reindeer, bison, and ibex. Although the original is now closed Lascaux 2 is equally interesting, also Font de Gaume is worth a visit.

From fairytale Château Milandes, to the flamboyant Hautefort and fortresses like Castlenaud to Bastides, like Domme & Belves, also pretty villages set into the cliff faces – La Roque Gageac and Beynac. also the fabulous gardens of Eyirgnac and Marqueyssac , giving you plenty of sites to see, whether by car, bike, foot , canoe or Balloon you will experience a holiday of memories.

Restaurants, cafes and markets are a speciality..In this region you will find Duck everywhere on the menu. Among the markets which have an array of fresh produce you will find:

Truffles, foie gras, wild mushrooms like cepes, girolles and morels, also walnuts, confits (meats preserved in fat) and fine country meats, chestnuts, strawberries, wines, liquors and brandies…and of course the famous cheeses..

So after your hectic day of sightseeing, relax in the centre of Sarlat, watch the world go by knowing you are only a few minutes walk from your apartment 'Le Cantou'

The Dordogne enjoys a more settled weather pattern than UK or Ireland, although it does have rain enriching the region with green fields in the winter months. It has a varied temperature, starting off cool in the mornings and heating up as the day goes along…layers are the best clothing to bring. In the summer-time the average temperature is around 30 ‘C..

The nearest airport is Bergerac, with airlines Ryan air and Flybe.

The new Brive Airport has flights from London with CityJet. Slightly further away you can get flights into Limoges, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Rodez..

From Calais the car journey is around 10 hours.

There is a train service from Paris to Bordeaux, then change to Sarlat. There is also a service from Paris to Souillac, then a shuttle bus to Sarlat.

In Sarlat there are car hire services such as Europcar, which is in walking distance from Sarlat train station.

Le Cantou is set in a medieval town house in the centre of historical Sarlat. Unfortunately there is no parking in the historical centre, but there is free parking 200 metres away. The apartment is on the second floor of a stone spiral staircase, and has a lovely view of the courtyard below and the roof tops above. The apartment has 3 huge windows and a fan so plenty of ventilation. The Tourist office is 2 minutes walk away from the apartment..where you can browse through the delights that the region has to offer. During the summer months, Sarlat is bustling with festivals of music, theatre and the street theatre, and of course not forgetting the Film Festival in November, the truffle festival in january, the duck festival in february ......

Excellent Apartment

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay in this apartment. The location is perfect. The apartment itself is very roomy, yet feels cozy. Beautifully decorated, lacking nothing. The owner, Emmanuel, could not be more helpful and is available whenever needed. We believe this to be the best value for the money in all of Sarlat.

Exceptional Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

This apartment exceeded all our expectations! Emmanuel is an excellent host providing us with amazing restaurant recommendations, all cleaning products (laundry detergent included) and a well-stocked kitchen. Emmanuel helped carry our luggage from our car (parked several blocks away) up the 2 flight spiral staircase to the apartment. He also made sure we knew how to operate the appliances. As a bonus, Emmanuel gave us a lovely bottle of red wine. The location of this apartment could not have been more ideal, right in the center of the old medieval city. Sarlat is an excellent hub for all tourist attractions in the Dordogne region including the prehistoric caves, canoeing, touring the Beau Villages and Castles, and shopping at the outdoor market. We look forward to returning to this apartment in Sarlat.

One thing we would like to make clear, as VRBO has it listed incorrectly; there is wifi at the apartment. You do not need to go to the Tourist Information Office to access wifi.

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this apartment. Its central yet quiet location in the medieval heart of Sarlat is ideal. The apartment is very clean, comfortable, well equipped and tastefully decorated. Emmanuel the owner was prompt, friendly and helpful both during the booking process and on our arrival and departure. He clearly takes pride in ensuring the apartment is well presented and that his guests are well informed about it. His recommendations about local restaurants and things to do and see were also very useful.

Charming historic apartment in center of oldest Sarlat

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the most magnificent time in Sarlat. Our perfectly appointed apartment was like a second home. We comfortably settled in with the help of the kind and energetic Emmanuel who was gracious and easy going. Our French language facility is poor at best so it helped immensely to have Emmanuel's expert help in English.

The apartment is stocked with all needed supplies and the stone lined bath is the best of modern amenities giving this 500 year old apartment living over to 21st century comforts. Sitting in the evening and looking out over the rooftops kept us in more than one night. We were so comfortable and the apartment itself is such a great experience why go out? Of course a quick juant downstairs and then three meters to the left and POW! You're in the old town square.

A huge advantage of this great place is the actual windows do not open into the square getting some of that nighttime reverie noise down.

In my humbe opinion the photos of the place on VRBO don't fully capture the charm of this terrific spot. Without a doubt if you are lucky enough to get to stay here you will not be disappointed.

Great location in the heart of Sarlat.

  • 4 of 5

This apartment was just as shown in the photos. The location was perfect. Right in the middle of everything. The WiFi worked great. At the next of our day, we were able to catch up on the news because we had English TV channels like CNN and BBC. The kitchen was tight but well equipped with everything that you would need to prepare breakfast or an easy meal. The value for price was just as we expected. The apartment could do with a bit of an update. A few less nick nacks would have given it a cleaner style and new linens would have been nice extras but again, for the price, it was more than we expected. We were happy here. Then owner was very kind and helpful. He showed us where the free parking was and left us a bottle of nice red wine.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay in this beautiful, historical apartment in the heart of the city. On market day we walked out of the apartment and were right in the middle of things! The host was very helpful. It was our favorite area that we stayed in during our five week trip around France.

Sarlat has been described as 'the jewel in the crown' with its medieval centre restored to its 17th century magnificence with such perfection that it is lit at night by gas lamps and is the set for a myriad of French movies. There are numerous 'plus beaux villages de France' in the area including Beynac. La Roque-Gageac, St-Leon-sur-Vezere, Domme, and Belves and the town markets are some of the finest in France, with many designated as 'marches de France.' .

The natural beauty of the area can be explored on the many well marked hiking and bike trails or by renting kayaks or canoes all along the Dordogne and Vezere rivers. A trip to buy groceries along the country lanes through the forest, over the hills and along the rivers is a treat in itself. With your apartment tucked into a charming medieval alley off the main square you can avail of the superb market, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Other Activities: Canoe/kayak, Ballooning, rock climbing, caving
