About the property

1 Bedroom/2 Bathroom - 1400 sq ft of oceanfront living space

This beautifully restored oceanfront home has all the charm of yesteryear with the added conveniences and sustainability of today. Offered as a vacation rental for the first time in 2013, the view and location are spectacular. In 2014, The Guardian newspaper listed it as one of the Top Beach Houses in the World. Completely renovated, this updated home has hardwood floors, granite countertops, koa cabinets, stainless steel appliances, air conditioning, iHome docking stations, Bose outdoor speakers with Bluetooth receiver (to pair your own devices and play music) with connections for Android and Apple products, iTouch pre-loaded with various Hawaiian music, wireless internet, full size washer/dryer, brand new California king bedroom set, luxurious bedding, hdtv plasma in great room and bedroom, gas bbq, Tiki Hut for afternoon drinks, teak lounges, etc etc. All lights are on dimmers so you can create your own environment and mood. There's even an indoor switch to light up the water at night to create your own private manta ray and eel show!

Ideally located overlooking Kahaluu Beach, you are within feet of the best snorkeling and surfing on the island. (If you do surf or stand up paddleboard, you can paddle straight out and be in the break in less than 5 minutes.) Dolphin sightings are quite common. During winter months, whales can be seen daily as they swim by.

Uniquely situated on a 9000 sq ft oceanfront lot, this home is a one-of-a-kind. You will experience complete privacy with expansive views up and down the coast. (We also own the property next door where you are free to pick papayas, bananas, etc. or just sit and watch the sunset.) While there is so much to do on the Big Island, you will have a difficult time pulling yourself away from your home and the incredible views and sounds of the ocean. You will find this special place to be relaxing, rejuvenating and inspiring.

Upon arrival you will be provided with tropical flower arrangements, kona coffee, fresh fruit, homemade banana bread, etc. For bookings exceeding 14 days, a 'freshen up' cleaning will be arranged midway through your stay at no additional charge.

About Ronald P. Herrema

Married over 20 years, we share the passion for travel and exploration. We own a business in California and Australia, and try to spend as much time as possible at this special home in Hawaii.

Ronald P. Herrema purchased this house in 2013

Why Ronald P. Herrema chose Kona Coast

We have been blessed to have traveled to many parts of the world and have not found a property or location as special as this one. Extensive renovation has been done to make this home both luxurious and sustainable. Expansive panoramic views and the gentle sounds of the ocean create a very unique setting unmatched by anything we have seen.

What makes this house unique

You will not find a home as close to the water as this one! The sights and sounds of the ocean are mesmerizing. From the large lanai and deck you can watch surfers, paddle boarders and boogie boarders or jump in the water and experience some of the best snorkeling on the globe. Lighting up the water at night makes for a spectacular view.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just left Kona Moana Hale yesterday. We had a great time in this beautiful and tastefully decorated home. We will surely miss the amazing sunsets, the sound of the waves and the cool ocean breeze. The home had everything we needed and more!

The fruits and goodies basket was a welcome treat. Everything you'll need for the beach (except sun screen!) has been provided - towels, chairs, snorkel sets and icebox.

It was also in the perfect location for everything we wanted to do - exploring the white, black and green sand beaches, snorkeling with the manta rays, visiting the volcanoes and eating out (but we enjoyed breakfast and dinner at the deck the most!). Even if the home was along a busy road, you can't hear any traffic noise because of the sounds of the crashing waves!

We also had a very pleasant experience dealing with Ron, the owner, when we were booking their home. He was very responsive over email, providing suggestions about the island and even calling us when we checked-in, to make sure we had everything we needed.

The Big Island is now our favorite of the Hawaiian islands and Kona Moana Hale was one of the reasons for that!

Breathtaking views

We have just returned from an amazing holiday. The oceanfront cottage is stunning with everything you need. So lucky that we got to spend 11 nights there! Spent plenty of time on the lanai watching waves, sunsets, and surfers. It's within walking distance of a great snorkelling spot and not far from town. Thank you Ron & Pam. Better than anything we could have imagined.

We loved the property we can't wait to go back. The pictures in the ad are great but it's way better in person. Ownership is highly perfessional as well.

Immaculate cottage with breathtaking views

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Is the first words that come to mind! Our stay at the Kona Moana Hale was amazing! Far the best vacation ever! I have vacactioned in the Bahamas, honeymooned in the Virgin Islands, but this little cottage far surpasses anywhere we have stayed. I just want to say thanks to Ron and his wife for going beyond to make our stay even more special , from the fruit, to the banana bread, the snorkeling equipment, those things really mattered. I want to also say the place was immaculate clean! I Can be pretty picky about cleanliness, and this was a huge plus at the cottage for me, thanks to the crew who does the cleaning! You do an awesome job! The cottage was so wonderful I just wanted to stay there and enjoy the scenery and not even go out! The view is breathtaking! We walked down the beach and done some snorkeling which was wonderful! We saw many colorful fish, my husband say turtles as well, we went zip lining, done the 8 mile hike to the volcano, went to the green beach and black beach, visited kua bay beach, which is a must, very beautiful! Also be sure and go early on weekend to beat the crowd. We ate at Annie's for an amazing burger! We enjoyed virgin pina coladas at Huggos, they were spectular! Enjoyed going to farmers market for fresh fruit. My husband and I hated to leave and go back home to reality, but looking forward to our next stay at the Kona Moana Hale! You definitely won't regret your stay here, you will wish you had more time!

Could not have been better

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Kona Moana Hale in early November, it was out first VRBO experience and I do not know how it could have been better. Ron was fantastic prior to the trip with providing all the information we would need. He also called after our arrival just to ensure everything was as it should be. The house itself was spotless and stocked with everything we could have possibly needed for our visit. I would recommend this property to absolutely anyone wanting to visit Kona or the surrounding area. I know we will be back!

A wonderful way to live!

  • 5 of 5

We spent nine days in Kona Moana Hale and enjoyed every second of our time there. The home was as advertised and the pictures show a delightful, clean, well-maintained, house with a killer location. To be any closer to the ocean you need flippers. We spent our mornings drinking coffee and watching the surfers and the afternoons reading and watching the spinner dolphins. In the evenings we went to dinner at many of the local eateries and came back to music and wine on the deck watching the stars. As an added bonus we were there during the Kona Ironman competition and they ran down the street in front of the house. It was very difficult to go home to reality. Ron was a delight to work with and very helpful with all of the details. He even called the first morning to see if we had any questions. The vacation was everything we wanted it to be and one that we will not soon forget.
