Born in Buffalo, attended Miami Univ. OH; career city planner, retired in 2011 to fulfill a dream- restoring a historic house into a lovely B & B. After 19 months and lots of help from some great contractors and my daughter, the Captain Bell House opened as a B & B on April 28, 2013
Philip Laurien purchased this house in 2011
The 1876 house retains original float glass windows, walnut newel post and curved railing, 10' ceilings, and arched pocket doors. There is a special warm feeling about this house that captures your heart the moment you walk thru the door.
Every suite has its own unique character and has been lovingly restored, yet with modern comforts. Great location in the downtown so you can walk 2 blocks to the lake, 4 blocks to the beach and 11 restaurants (including Zagat's 'exceptional- to perfect' rated Chez Francois) within 3 blocks.
This was our second stay with Phil and he is VERY accommodating. We enjoy being so close to downtown. Everything is so clean it is truly home away from home.
My husband and I were looking for a quiet weekend away from home, and we very much enjoyed our stay with Captain Phil at the Captain Bell House. Phil was very polite and accommodating. The Captain's Quarters was clean and comfortable, and we enjoyed the lake house decor. The bathroom was fabulous - nice, deep tub for baths and the towels were super soft! Loved the little town of Vermilion and the breakfast at Granny Joe's was excellent (you must try the potato cakes - out of this world!). Vermilion is situated nicely between Sandusky and Cleveland, so you can stay in a nice, quiet, small town and still be a short drive from things to do in the cities. We liked being able to walk to everything we wanted to do in Vermilion. We would definitely come back and stay again!
A typical B&B offers a room with a bed and, possibly, a bathroom. At Captain Bell House, you'll find so much more. The apartment is definitely spacious with a comfortable living room with desk, a well equipped kitchen, a large, sparkling clean bathroom, and a bedroom with a deliciously comfortable bed. Situated within walking distance to just about everything you could possibly want, you can watch the world go by, either through the large window or out on the patio. If you want to go a bit farther, you can hop on one of the two bikes that the owner supplies for free. Speaking of Phil, you couldn't find a friendlier, harder worker, justifiably proud of the historical home he's refurbished quite successfully. A bit unusual is the fact that the breakfast part of the B&B is a voucher for Granny Joe's down the street--perfect for the folks who don't like to "mix" so early in the morning. My only suggestion to Phil is that he boost the value of the voucher a tad. One final comment is that we ate well wherever we went but particularly enjoyed the Wine Vault. So delicious!
Our experience was very nice. The rooms were very clean with a seaside flair. The owner/operator was very nice, accommodating and helpful. The photos represented the rooms and the location well. It is located near downtown and many restaurants, small shops the lake and some inland channels. We hope to stay there again. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to visit the area and stay in a clean, charming and historical building.
We have been traveling to Lake Erie for a few days or a week for the last several years. This week was just my husband and me. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters; it was perfect! We enjoyed the roomy and super clean accommodations. Phil was the perfect host -- conveniently available, but never intrusive. We took advantage of the weber grill and patio for a couple of meals. We appreciated the bicycles provided. We enjoyed our morning stroll to Granny's and loved every breakfast we had. I recommend the 2 egg special with sour dough toast, bacon, and a potato pancake with sour cream! The omelets are great, too. The Wine Vault was a great place to eat less than a block away-amazing food at an affordable price. The full size washer and dryer made coming home with clean laundry and the transition back to real life so much easier. The house is located so conveniently so that you can walk to the quaint downtown. The beach at the end of Main Street is a great little place with beach chairs to rent for a $1 an hour. Saturday morning a great little farmer's market was up and running downtown. Our stay at the Captain's Quarters was just so relaxing and wonderful. The bed is so comfortable and the towels were so soft. I cannot recommend it highly enough! We cannot wait to go back! :-)
Enjoyed our stay at the Captain Bell House. Our spacious suite included a sitting room, bedroom, kitchen, full bathroom and washer and dryer. It was clean, comfortable and private. Had a lovely (albeit expensive!) three-hour dinner at Chez Francois. Our vouchers for breakfast the next morning at Granny Joe's covered only part of our meal, which was adequate -- but nothing to write home about. My husband's otherwise tasty pancakes were served with individual packets of Smucker's syrup. My oatmeal was runny.

The Captain Bell House B & B is located in the heart of old Harbourtown, an 1837 historic plat settled by ship builders and ship captains. Many of the original structures still exist and are constantly being restored. The town center is quaint, is very walkable with friendly residents eager to help you enjoy your stay.
