About the property

2nd floor Studio lodging close to everything.

The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from it's center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. Your own private parking leads to the stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV with satalite TV and blueray. The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment so that if you stand in the center you have a 360 degree view of the sky. Notice how it changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through it's moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. An antique ship's light occupies the cuppola and can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. Seagulls are your companions and you may hear their webby feet tapping on the roof in the morning. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home (VRBO# 405338) and is next door to the 'Writer's Cabin' (VRBO# 452067) and 'The Boathouse' a recently constructed timberframe home that is the residence of the owners. You are always welcome to drop in to the Boathouse and see what project is under way. Currently the owner is building an Alaskan skiff. If you are traveling with a large group, consider including the neighboring Fisherman's and Writer's cabins which share the property. There is capacity for a group of 12 or so if you rent all the cabins. You can get the whole family reunion or wedding group on one site! The Lighthouse is known for it's inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a handfull of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Minnesota

We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.

What makes this studio unique

This is a great location for the summer festivals fall leaf looking, and winter get always. Music and art seem to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening in the summer. Artists are plying their wares in many shops. There is always something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is very close. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock. Not only is the Lighthouse charming, It is a cleverly designed lodging- and has been praised by a notable architect guest for it's creative use of geometry, timberframing, and blend of luxurious appointments while retaining economy of space.

Perfect Grand Marais location and launching point

  • 5 of 5

The Lighthouse was a dream to stay at! I stayed for a week in February while taking a class at the North House Folk school and the location and amenities were perfect. Arrival was just as described in the welcome packet. The location was an easy walk to and from the school for class every day and meant I did not have to worry about clearing snow off my car or parking and I could walk back to the lighthouse over lunch. The kitchenette and kitchen tools were great for cooking a couple meals and making breakfast and coffee every morning. They had excellent recommendations for location hiking trails and restaurants. The view and morning light were incredible. I would definitely love to stay here again and think this is a perfect option for someone by themselves or a couple who are taking at class at North House, want to use it as a launching point for daytime activities but easily walk to places at night or need a creative retreat. I can't wait for my next visit!

Fantastic spot, cozy and fun. We enjoyed our stay at the lighthouse far more than our stay at a much more expensive place in Duluth.

Cozy Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with our newborn right after Christmas and it was such a wonderful experience. The space is functional and cozy, especially during a snowy winter week. It's easy to walk to the main stores and restaurants in Grand Marais and has a great view of the lake. We only wished there would have been a snow storm during our stay since it's a great place to watch the weather and hibernate. We would recommend this place to any couple looking for a fun getaway.

beauty and comfort

  • 5 of 5

The Lighthouse is indeed unique. With wonderful views of the Grand Marais harbor, excellent for sunrise and sunset alike, this charming accommodation provides beauty inside as well. The warmth of wood and the openness of a high cupola (with a "lighthouse" lamp!) create a sense of spacious and pleasing surroundings in a very compact room. I stayed here over a week in mid-October, enjoying a course at the North House Folk School, days of hiking, and the pleasure of returning to this space as my home base. The kitchen area offers all one needs for breakfasts and simple meals, and the shower and bathroom are an imaginative and very private use of a small space. The unit is on the second floor, reached by an external staircase, and the outdoors balcony area with a table and chairs expands the living area and offers more views. The Lighthouse is best for a solo traveler or a couple. This past summer I stayed in the Writer's Cabin on the same property and found that also pleasant and well furnished, with more room but less "magic." The owners are most gracious, friendly and helpful yet respectful of a need for solitude if that is what you come to the North Shore for. I already look forward to a return visit!
