Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday studio in Grand Marais - The Lighthouse

2nd floor Studio lodging close to everything.

The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from it's center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. Your own private parking leads to the stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV with satalite TV and blueray. The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment so that if you stand in the center you have a 360 degree view of the sky. Notice how it changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through it's moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. An antique ship's light occupies the cuppola and can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. Seagulls are your companions and you may hear their webby feet tapping on the roof in the morning. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home (VRBO# 405338) and is next door to the 'Writer's Cabin' (VRBO# 452067) and 'The Boathouse' a recently constructed timberframe home that is the residence of the owners. You are always welcome to drop in to the Boathouse and see what project is under way. Currently the owner is building an Alaskan skiff. If you are traveling with a large group, consider including the neighboring Fisherman's and Writer's cabins which share the property. There is capacity for a group of 12 or so if you rent all the cabins. You can get the whole family reunion or wedding group on one site! The Lighthouse is known for it's inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a handfull of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Minnesota

We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.

What makes this studio unique

This is a great location for the summer festivals fall leaf looking, and winter get always. Music and art seem to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening in the summer. Artists are plying their wares in many shops. There is always something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is very close. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock. Not only is the Lighthouse charming, It is a cleverly designed lodging- and has been praised by a notable architect guest for it's creative use of geometry, timberframing, and blend of luxurious appointments while retaining economy of space.

beauty and comfort

  • 5 of 5

The Lighthouse is indeed unique. With wonderful views of the Grand Marais harbor, excellent for sunrise and sunset alike, this charming accommodation provides beauty inside as well. The warmth of wood and the openness of a high cupola (with a "lighthouse" lamp!) create a sense of spacious and pleasing surroundings in a very compact room. I stayed here over a week in mid-October, enjoying a course at the North House Folk School, days of hiking, and the pleasure of returning to this space as my home base. The kitchen area offers all one needs for breakfasts and simple meals, and the shower and bathroom are an imaginative and very private use of a small space. The unit is on the second floor, reached by an external staircase, and the outdoors balcony area with a table and chairs expands the living area and offers more views. The Lighthouse is best for a solo traveler or a couple. This past summer I stayed in the Writer's Cabin on the same property and found that also pleasant and well furnished, with more room but less "magic." The owners are most gracious, friendly and helpful yet respectful of a need for solitude if that is what you come to the North Shore for. I already look forward to a return visit!

Perfect rental in a perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

The location and quality of this rental are top notch. It's a fantastic place to walk into town from, or to have as a base camp for hiking excursions. And, if it rains, rent a RedBox movie in town and have a great spot to hang out. Highly recommended.

Excellent! Great communication. Responded promptly to questions we had. Unit was super clean. Had everything we needed. We appreciated the many small details they put into making our stay smooth. For instance; fresh flowers on the table, a packet containing information about local restaurant/businesses and reading lights in very handy places, just to name a few. Can't wait to return in the future!

A perfect mix of convenience and seclusion

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the lighthouse. Upon checking in, the room was exactly as advertised. We felt welcome and at home within minutes and while we were so very close to anywhere in town, we continued to feel compelled just to hole up in the room relaxing. It's a charming and unique place that we won't soon forget.

A very nice place to stay while in Grand Marais.

  • 5 of 5

Staying in the lighthouse was very pleasant and the town is fine. We appreciated the list of places Todd and Susan enjoy, it was very helpful,

I do have some comments I would like to get to Todd. I tried to send these comments direct to Todd using an email address provided in the binder in the room. Apparently that address is obsolete. The comment I wanted to give Todd regarded the remote for the cable TV. The zero button does not work. For example, if you try to key in channel 50, you will get channel 5. One last comment regards the invitation in the binder to go visit the boathouse. I suggest that the binder have a map of the layout of the complex. I could not be sure where the boathouse was and did not want to explore to the extent that I trespassed on a neighbor's property.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback, we keep extra remotes so we will just replace it. We are working with an area artist to create unique and one of a kind signs on the property that help people know what is what. We think this will help with exactly what you are talking about, and with clarity with parking as well. Cheers!

Exceptional in Every Way

  • 5 of 5

Hats off to the owners for creating an exceptional place to call home while visiting Grand Marais. We've stayed at several properties through VRBO and this ranks right at the top. It's amazing how much style was fit into this space and while it's small, it's perfect in its simplicity and just right for the two of us. We enjoyed a commanding view of the harbor, were steps from downtown, and still it felt like a private retreat nicely detached from all the action. We hope to return again soon.
