Our house is located in downtown Gettysburg 2 blocks from the center of town. Please call us to book your next visit to Gettysburg with us at The Gettysburg Retreat! Thank You!

The Gettysburg Retreat is a pre-Civil War 2 story Gable front house. Built in 1853 it was originally owned by William Steinhour. Steinhour owned the house until 1859, then sold to Henry and Mary Zeigler in 1860, then repurchased by William Steinhour in 1864. It was later bought in 1868 by William Z. Little and then sold in 1872 to James Caldwell. The house was later passed down to Little's heir in 1873.

One thing interesting about the house, is in the first 2 blocks of West Middle Street. You will find several Civil War houses towards downtown Gettysburg, but as you reach The Gettysburg Retreat, the house beside it was the last house in town until you get to Seminary Ridge during the Civil War.

The land Gettysburg was founded on was originally owned by William Penn. Penn would later sell the land to town founder James Getty. The Gettysburg Retreat was the 127th lot of land allocated to Getty in the exchange.

Overall, we love it! Only thing is the parking. If we could get 3-4 parkings would be great!

Owner's Response: I am sorry you felt there was not enough spaces for you to park at. I sent you instructions on parking and told you to use any of the parking spaces that faced the street. This is in a parking lot out back and the business closes on Friday at four so the whole parking lot was yours the whole time you were there. I am sorry there was any confusion on parking

We had a weekend with my siblings and really enjoyed the house. It was very comfortable and had the best beds and sheets! Great location and enjoyed the homemade cookies our host provided on our arrival. I would definitely stay here again.

GREAT Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

The house was everything we expected and more. It was very clean and well decorated. There were seven adults and one child and there was plenty of space to spread out. It was great being able to all sit at the table for meals that we had at the house. Would go back again tomorrow!! Thanks Sandee

About Sandee

We purchased the home in 2012 and my husband and I have been remodeling it every since. We are DYI's! It has been fun.

The house is located at 145 West Middle Street in Gettysburg and is within walking distance to downtown Gettysburg. There is a Trolley that runs in Gettysburg that you can ride for a small fee all day and it even goes out to The Gettysburg Visitor's Center and Museum. So you can leave your car at the house and save on gas while you are here!

We own 2 vacation homes now. Lincoln Quarters is located right next door to The Gettysburg Retreat. It is a 3 bedroom 1 bath upstairs apartment.

We have the only 2 vacation homes in Gettysburg that are both legally open with all of our permits and licences.

Sandee purchased this house in 2012

Why Sandee chose Gettysburg

My Husband and I purchased this property because we loved the history behind it and wanted to share with others that love Gettysburg also.

What makes this house unique

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great house, great location, great owners!

Left on Jun 11, 2016 for a stay in Jun 2016

This is the first time I ever rented a house. I thought I would be uncomfortable in some one else's house, but I was wrong. We felt comfortable from the second we entered the Retreat. We were a group of 7 adults. We had two sets of honeymooners, 4 were in there 20's and three of us were in our late 50's..We had tons of space and privacy when needed. To start you need to know what kind of service you will receive from the owners. The day before we left I hosted a wedding in my yard, so it was 7:30 PM before I sat down to check my emails.I saw an email from the owner, Sandee, asking me to call her as soon as possible. I thought maybe she needs more information from me. When she answered the phone she had said she had been trying to call me all day and was glad I had called. She wanted me to know that severe thunderstorms were predicted to come through in the afternoon and she wanted us to get down early so we would not be driving through these storms. She offered to have the house ready by 9AM! Check in is at 4PM and we had already arranged for a early check in at 3PM. Sh said the house would be ready at 9AM for us and she would have flashlights with fresh batteries waiting for us in the kitchen if the power went out. That was so nice of her to call and let us come early. We reached the house by 1:30 and the storms hit a hour later. We explored the house after arriving and found that we had enough towels and bedding that we would not even have to do laundry the whole vacation if we did not want too. There was extra toilet paper, paper towels, light bulbs, batteries, extension cords, notepads, pens, hand soaps, dish detergent, laundry detergent and the list goes on.The house has everything you need except for personal items like body wash, shampoo and conditioner. The living room was a great place for all of us to meet up for a while everyday. The youngsters played a lot of chess and checkers. Everyone found a movie they could enjoy in large selection under the stairs. The youngsters took the three upstairs bedrooms. They said all of the beds were comfortable. All of the rooms had box fans which was nice to block out noises from the streets. Everyone slept well. Us older folks took the downstairs rooms. The honeymooners took the bedroom of the kitchen which was nice since it has a door to a small porch off the side. They were also the early risers so they could make breakfa
