The dwellings are log chalets complete with showers and bathrooms on the river's edge in a pristine forested mountain setting. All the furniture is log style including the beds. Hiking, fishing, horseback riding and nearby hot springs are all within 15 minutes of the resort.
I began my career in 1963 in Montana as a forester for the U.S. Forest Service as a ranger in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. After eight years I left and for a year I studied flamenco guitar in Spain. I returned to Montana to obtain advanced degrees in forestry and botany and taught college courses in forestry and fly fishing for 22 years. I retired from teaching in 1996 and built the dwelling and developed the site on the Clark Fork River to serve the public for lodging and fishing. My daughter worked as the cook and my son served as the second fishing guide for me until he started a similar business in northern California. I now have 5 grandchildren.
Donn R. Dale Owner, Outfitter, Guide and Manager purchased this chalet in 1983
Mountain riverside trail hiking, fly fishing, horseback riding, bird watching, white water rafting, scenic river floats and antiquing are all within 15 minutes of Clark Fork River Outfitters. There are comfortable dwellings with meals available next to the river and it is very quiet and tranquil in the evenings spent on the decks which overlook the river. Glacier Park is two hours drive to the northeast.
Clark Fork River Outfitters is known as a wonderful stress clinic where you can really unwind, relax and enjoy nature at it's best. It is very quiet here with only the sound of birds and the water rushing from the nearby river.
We reserved this place at the last minute before a rafting trip. Don was great to deal with! He is very accommodating and patient since we didn't have all of our details before I called him. We had 12 people staying in two chalets and a teepee. The main river chalet was a fantastic gathering spot for a BBQ right on the water. Don and his hired hand spent part of the evening with us. Don entertained us with his fabulous flamenco guitar playing. We caught crawfish, had a fire on the beach, laughed, visited and all slept soundly with enough beds to go around! Kitchen was handy but we were glad we brought our own cups, plates, and utensils. We wanted to clean up better but had no dish towels or cloths. Bathrooms were stocked with towels and wash cloths. It was a great over night stay and we are looking forward to going back next year for a longer stay and to take advantage of Don's fly fishing skills.
My husband and I stayed at the Clark Fork River Outfitters for 4 days and had a wonderful time. When we arrived our cabin was neat, tidy and clean. The log cabin is right on the river as advertised, beautiful surroundings and peaceful with the deck facing the river. Everything worked perfectly making our stay one we will always relish. The staff was delightful, informative and a lot of fun. Whenever we had a question or request it was always addressed quickly professionally and with a smile. The coffee and breakfast was awesome every morning.
Neither of us had ever fly fished before and were very much looking forward to learning. We came to the right place to learn how to fly fish. Don’s focus on getting the technique right mixed with a great sense of humor made our lessons a highlight of our visit. In our first session we had the basics down with regards to casting. We were hooked. We did not bring our own fishing gear however the staff and Don were gracious whenever we popped in after our daily adventure to lend us rod and reels allowing us to practice ( top notch gear). We very much enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to do it again.
If you are looking for a wonderful time fly fishing in Montana, join Don and his crew you will be glad you did!
My wife and I arrived and Donn was there to meet us and direct us to our cabin. Having fished the Clark Fork before so we decided that this visit was not going to include fishing but rather it was going to be relaxation and down time even though we knew of Donn's legendary status as a guide.
We enjoyed a beautiful London Broil the first nite after returning from the hotsprings down the road. After the gourmet food we listened to Donn's top-notch guitar playing on the deck while we watched osprey and eagles fishing in the river in front of us. In the morning we had a hearty breakfast and just lazed around the property enjoying the complete tranquility of the place.
My wife is pretty picky as far as cleanliness goes and I was a bit worried about booking us into such remote/rustic conditions. By the end of our visit she was raving about clean everything was from the kitchen to the cabins
If you want to relax, be in complete beauty and tranquility .....and be treated like a king and queen, both my wife and I highly recommend this gem.
Thanks Donn!! (next time we are going to fish!)
We arrived with another couple for fishing and an overnight stay. After getting situated we started for the river and a day of fishing. Once on the river we settled in and thoroughly enjoyed the float. Our time on the river entailed many stops at fishing holes where several fish were caught and plenty of time was given to fish all we wanted. As the day progressed we shared lots of stories of travels and experiences and many many laughs. We stopped for lunch along the rivers edge and tables were set up and we were served a delightful lunch. I would definitely say that the time on the river was very very ample and no shortage of fishing stops. When we arrived back to the cabins we sat on the deck of the main cabin and chatted with friends and then we were served a delicious dinner and taken well care of. The amazing thing to me was the long night sleep my husband and I enjoyed as we very much enjoyed our time with Don Dale and his staff who literally catered to us with a smile on their face.
The host was nowhere to be found upon arrival. After waiting around for over half an hour, he finally emerged and showed us to our cabin. The bathroom smelled awful and was covered with mouse droppings, since there was a nest under the sink. The toilet, sink and shower were filthy, and the shower had someone's personal soaps and scrubber in it. I had to ask for some cleaning products to clean the bathroom and nest myself. Donn's only employee had apparently quit showing up to work.
The first breakfast was so bad, we had to decline the second breakfast. We were not served dinner on the first night or lunch on the second day. The dinner on the river was pre-boiled chicken and corn. They were both not stored to food service guidelines, and were barely warm after hours on the water. He dropped one of our plates of food and told us to just "wash it off" in the river and eat it anyway. I don't think Donn has had a food handling class in a while!
The guide service was frustrating to the point of anger! Donn Dale, the owner and guide, was extremely rude to my fiancé, she had to hold back tears. On more than one occasion Donn yelled at her and yanked the pole out of her hand. I had to confront Donn and ask if we needed to just stop fishing and return to the take out! He stated everything was fine, and chilled out for a little while. Donn then repeatedly talked down to my fiancé. The rest of the trip, Donn was just grumpy and offered little help. On the first strike from a rising fish, I lost my fly. It was an obvious bad knot, and Donn blamed me, for setting the hook too hard, on 4x tippet.
Other issues of note;
My fiancé and I were requested to help with a shuttle of three trucks and and trailers to a take out down river. We did the nice thing and used up a portion of our morning and helped. Not even a thanks was given.
We talked to a couple that were staying in the other cabin, and they reported the same horrific conditions in their cabin, as well.
I was charged $140 over the quoted price. When I called to ask about the over charge, Donn stated the website was wrong and was changed a month ago. I was looking at the current website, and no such changes had happened. He attempted to charge me for for each individual meal and each night of lodging and then for the guided trip. The website clearly had a price for all inclusive package that was much cheaper.
I do not recommend staying here.
