Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom (Sleeps 8), 3 Bath - Pet Friendly

Built in 1790 and beautifully restored, The Old Peddler's House has 2 bedrooms (sleeping 8), 3 full baths, a living/family room and dining room, a large kitchen with eating area and a laundry room with washer and dryer. There is a fireplace in every room with the living room fireplace usable. There are comfortable rockers on the front porch and a large deck with a dining table/chairs and Adirondack chairs overlooking a creek. The setting is peaceful, quiet and secluded, surrounded by woods and meadows and located at the end of a mile-long gravel lane.

The house was built in 1790, the same timeframe as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. It was originally a humble single-room farmer's cabin with a fireplace and a narrow staircase to a second room above. In 1830, a mirror-image cabin was built adjoining it, doubling its size. A smaller rear "shed" addition was added in the early 1900s. The cabin has been lovingly restored to keep its historical features intact and tastefully add modern conveniences, including washer & dryer, dishwasher, television and Internet.

The Old Peddler's House is a scenic hour's drive from the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the homes of 3 Founding Fathers/Presidents (Jefferson, Madison and Monroe) and many Civil War battlefields (Appomattox, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Petersburg). It is a little over a mile from fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the scenic James River and is about 2.5 hours from Colonial Williamsburg. It is 40 minutes from Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. There are 6 wineries within an hour's drive, including Donald Trump's and Dave Matthew's on Carter's Mountain, along with apple picking. Several apple cider places, including Bold Rock Cider, are about 40 minutes west.

The cabin is part of a 250-acres working cattle farm, home to grass-fed cows, horses, free-range chickens and friendly cats and dogs. The farm has a swimming pond and a children's' fort built in a copse of trees overlooking a creek for kids to explore and enjoy.

Beautiful home, wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

Tom and Alicia are the most gracious hosts. We were greeted by Alicia with fresh eggs and a tour of the home, including its history (which I love). They have done an amazing job restoring this home, and making it a beautiful and comfortable place to stay. We have 6 children, and it slept all 8 of us comfortably. And I have to add that Alicia didn’t flinch as all 6 of our kids piled out of the car (as some people do), and she was kind and welcoming to each of them. This goes a long way with a Mama :) Our kids loved playing in the creek and the large yard, and I loved that it was safe and secluded. Downtown Scottsville, VA is only about 15 minutes away and it’s the most charming little town. We will definitely be returning!

A very nice weekend

  • 5 of 5

The Peddler's cabin is a very charming and unique property. It is a bit quirky, but that adds to the charm. Tom is very proud of the amazing restoration of the cabin and I can see why. We stayed at the cabin for a long weekend while attending a wedding at Mt. Ada Farm. We enjoyed our stay very much. The fresh eggs were a nice touch. The cabin is warm and inviting, nicely decorated, rustic, but yet you have a tank less water heater (lots of hot water for showers), a nice sized kitchen, dual zone heating and cooling, comfortable beds and couches...sort of "glamping". The cabin is located down a one mile long (or so) unpaved road so plan for that. Internet could be a better and our phones struggled with connection -(but they did in may areas around Scottsville and Charlottesville so that is not unique to the cabin), and it was actually nice to be unplugged a bit. The cabin does have a land line phone from which you can all anywhere for no additional charge so you still can be connected if you need to be. They allowed us to bring our dogs for a small pet fee and the dogs loved it too! The cabin is convenient to several nice wineries. We did several tastings. The brew pub in town was a friendly low key spot. Much more fun than hotel rooms! All in all a great spot with very friendly and accommodating owners. Someday, we would welcome the opportunity to return.

Tranquility and Nature

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect month of March at the Peddler's Cottage. The cottage is so cozy and tidy and comfortable. It has been lovingly and tastefully renovated. We are a retired couple with an old dog, and long walks through the trails in the woods were just what we wanted to do. The cottage is remote, it is about a 20 minute drive to Scottsville, where you will find groceries, a good coffee shop/bookstore and pub. The area is full of interesting historical sites, and many vineyards. We loved Barboursville.

Alicia and Tom and the most gracious hosts with a beautiful and historical property

  • 5 of 5

We are thrilled that we chose this house to catch up with old friends and enjoy nature and quiet. Tom and Alicia are lovely! They spent time with us at check in, and during our stay, showing us their beautiful farm. We even met a baby cow and collected eggs from the chicken coop. The house is larger than I️t seemed in photos, and perfectly quaint. We already want to book again and come back!
