About Karen

We were the owners of an exclusive store named Peking Lounge located in Vancouver's Chinatown and have been in business since 2003. We use our house on Bowen Island on a regular basis but welcome rental opportunities as well. Currently living in Toronto now, we have entrusted the management to Heidi and Karen, Bowen residents.

Karen purchased this house in 2008

Why Karen chose British Columbia Gulf Islands

We bought this house on Bowen Island in 2008 due to its proximity to Vancouver and to all the services available on the island alone with hourly ferries. Although only 45 minutes door to door from downtown Vancouver to the house, the island's unique setting and quietness allows one to relax and unwind without having to drive for hours or having to pack food and other necessities as everything is available right on the island. Because the house is located so close to the ferry terminal and the village, it is possible to leave your car behind and walk everywhere. We are also less then 1 km from Kilarney Lake and its amazing 5 km hiking loop.

What makes this house unique

The Peking Lounge Guest House has a unique Asian inspired decor that provides guests with a sense of peacefulness and comfort. Access to Vancouver is so easy that it is the perfect place to call your base as you enjoy all the beauty and activities of the Vancouver area without having to stay in the city and often pay much higher prices. The Guest House is fully equipped for those who prefer to lounge around, relax and share fantastic home cooked meals without having to go anywhere. The house is not ideal for functions, weddings, family reunions etc, but perfect for quiet retreats or small groups of friends to spend time together. The back garden is shaded and private and features a yoga/ meditation platform.

Peking House

Hi Karen

Just to let you know that we really enjoyed our stay. I took my five year old granddaughter on a tour of the grounds. She is a collector of interesting things. She brought a small bag with her. She picked a red berry from one tree, and then a multicoloured leaf from somewhere else. As we went around the circle at every corner was a “hidden treasure”. A beautiful bowl in behind something placed perfectly. She looked and said “oh look at that beautiful pot”. I explained that someone had placed that there. She said who – I told her that the lady that owned the house had done that. She looked up at me with her big brown eyes and said “she is special Bubbie” My older grandchildren loved it too. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed. We walked to town for lunch on Saturday but cooked at home on the two nights we were there. The lovely fireplace with a crackling fire was so enjoyable for all of us city folks that have the gas fireplaces. We played cards, cooked food, slept so well in the comfortable beds with the soft cosy sheets and duvets.

Cozy, comfortable and perfect for our two-family Christmas gathering

Our party of eight just spent a lovely Christmas vacation at the Peking Lounge Guest House. It really is a beautiful and cozy home, with lots of space for a large group such as ours—two families with adult children and a baby (and dogs). It is tastefully furnished and decorated, with lots of natural light from the large windows and skylights, and the beds (and bedding) were really comfortable! (My daughter-in-law even wrote down the brand of pillow so she could find one like it!)

While we really only used the main upstairs kitchen—which was very well equipped and offered lots of counter space for two or three people to work in—it was nice to have the extra fridge downstairs, and we did use both ovens to cook our turkey dinner.

The fireplace (and firewood provided) made it super cozy upstairs, and Karen had set up a decorated Christmas tree and added some other festive touches—making it feel warm and welcoming. The large wood coffee table in the living room was perfect for playing games around.

There was snow on Bowen for our entire seven-day stay there, which is atypical from what we understood but made it very pretty. We explored the nearby trails and walked into town from the house. Would love to visit at a warmer time of year to fully enjoy the outdoor patio and deck on the house—it would be gorgeous to relax out there on a sunny day, overlooking the peaceful back garden. Because of the wintry weather, we didn’t get to make use of the kayaks, but I would definitely see that as a plus in a different season.

A big thank you to Karen, the manager, who was considerate and pleasant to deal with. The owners of the Peking Lounge Guest House are fortunate to have her as their representative!

I would definitely recommend staying at the Peking Lounge Guest House. Thanks again!

Wonderful, relaxing stay

We had the pleasure of staying at Peking Lounge Guest House again for a wedding this summer, and it was just as great as we remembered. Check-in was smooth - even when I forgot the passcode(!) - Karen was quick to respond and we were able to get in immediately. We were only there for 2 nights but it was exactly the calm, quiet getaway we were looking for. It's in a perfect location as we had people in our party walk off the ferry. I highly recommend staying at the Peking Lounge Guest House, and I can't wait for our next stay!

As a family of six adults we really enjoyed the four bedrooms and space the house offered.
