Overview

About the property

Two Bedroom/One Bath Beach Side Bungalow just a 2 minute walk to the beach

We are offering our unique and rustic historic carriage house. Built in the early 1900's and the home of one of the early ice delivery businesses in the Historic Ocean View section of Norfolk, on the Chesapeake Bay. Our unique bungalow is a 2 to 3 minute walk to the beautiful, wide and expansive beaches of the Bay. These beaches are perfect for little children as the waves usually are very small and the water is very shallow. The fishing in this area is very good from the surf as well.

Our unit is very nicely decorated and is perfect for a small family. It can also accommodate some larger groups. We have off street parking available for two vehicles. We have a fenced in grassy yard area that is perfect for walking dogs or allowing them some room to walk and play.

Our main bedroom which opens to the bathroom, contains a very comfortable queen size bed. The second bedroom has two very comfortable twin beds.

We have a large living room that has a gas fireplace for beauty as well as heat in the colder months. Included is WiFi and a 55" Smart TV. We also have a futon that opens to a full size bed and can easily accommodate two people. The unit can handle six people easily. There is one bathroom with a small shower that may be difficult for plus size people to negotiate. We have an outdoor patio for leisure to enjoy the very pretty outdoors along with nice shade. We do allow pets with an additional fee for cleaning, however, please keep your pets off of the furniture and bedding. We want to keep it beautiful and clean for our future guests.

We do allow outdoor smoking in the yard and on our patio. Thank you for considering a stay in our Beautiful Historic Bungalow! We have added an extra rollout twin bed to handle one more little one. We also have a Pack & Play for your infant to sleep in as well as a high chair.

As this property was constructed very early in the 1900's you will notice some very unique architectural features. The bathroom is unfortunately rather small, so the shower may be a bit cramped for larger people. There is a full time guest in the above apartment, so please no parties. This unique unit will open your eyes to architecture as it existed around the turn of the century. Enjoy!

About George

My name is George, and I am an engineering student at ODU who makes ends meet by hosting people in my unique vacation homes in Ocean View.

George purchased this bungalow in 2017

Why George chose Bay View

This property is cute, unique and perfectly situated to walk to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay beaches! Perfect for your family or a larger group! While it is equipped with all the comforts of home, due to its age and construction, it would not be considered luxurious. It is clean and comfortable, but could be challenging if you are over 6'2" tall. The ceilings are a bit low, as are the door jambs. There are no overhead lights or fans due to the ceilings being a bit low. We have installed lamps and other lighting to brighten it up. We hope you enjoy the Rustic nature and the Old World Charm of this Turn of the Century Carriage House - or as we refer to it, "Our Bungalow".

What makes this bungalow unique

Our proximity to the beaches makes this a wonderful vacation spot!

A large new Air Conditioner is being installed August 1. A new Sofa/LoveSeat Combo is being installed at the same time.

Had a great time

  • 5 of 5

Older bungalow but quaint. Lots of room for the 7 of us and 1 dog. Walked to the beach and had fun. Was able to cook instead of "going out" every night.

I do wish there was more lighting and electrical outlits but we made due.

Over all great time!! Thanks George!!

Great place for a chill beach weekend with the family

  • 4 of 5

We rented this place for a long beach weekend. It was my wife, two children, mother and myself. We had a great time and loved the amenities provided. The beach is quiet, a short walk away and very easy to get to with a crosswalk across Ocean View Dr. My only problem with the place was the small bathroom, especially the shower. It was as far away from the front door as possible. This made rinsing off from the beach problematic without tracking sand across the apartment. I recommend adding an outdoor shower for rinsing off when returning from the beach. Aside from that one issue, the apartment amenities are good for a beach rental, the area is quiet, there is a convenience store within walking distance, there are plenty of good dining options and grocery stores within an easy drive, and the layout of the apartment is great for a family. Having lived in Norfolk and VA Beach and having family in the area, I have stayed at and visited numerous rentals/hotels/motels around Hampton Roads and this place was great. For the price I don't feel we could have done better. My entire family loved the apartment and didn't have any complaints, except having to leave the beach to get ready for dinner. This will be my first choice when returning to the Hampton Roads area for a visit to the beach.

Awesome

  • 5 of 5

This place was quaint and cozy. It provided everything we needed and the beach was amazing. With only a short drive into va beach was nice and had plenty of restraunts to choose from. Being pet friendly was a plus for us. I had a few questions and they were very responsive. I would and will be staying there again

Fun Little Rental

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week (family of 4). The rental is a smaller downstairs unit. For a larger family the shower could be a little small, I'm in n between and did find it a bit difficult to move around and the shower head is a little low. This was not a deal breaker though. The rest of the unit is really nice, has a living room with a large TV and a kitchen. I've read the other reviews and during our stay we had no issues with the air conditioning - yes they are 2 window units but they worked without issue. Every day of our stay was 90+ degrees and we had ZERO issues with the unit or any bedroom being hot. Bathroom is small but who really cares, there was a large mirror in the master bedroom and we used that most of the time. The biggest downside was the lighting - it was pretty dark and the lamps we'rent really bright enough for the space and there weren't enough outlets around - we would have to unplug something to charge our phones. I didn't feel the furniture in the living room was very comfortable but my family didn't really take issue with that. The reason for the 4 STAR rating is that we came for a beach getaway and this rental served that purpose, any of the issues mentioned could easily be ignored and didn't make our experience poor in any way. Look at the other rental prices within the area and the price charged for this unit is phenomenal and it should be expected that it's not a 5-star hotel. It may not be well lit but it has the amenities you need to sit back and relax for a getaway. The area is great and friendly people all around and the owner is very responsive to concerns and questions and wants you to truly enjoy your stay. I would definitely stay again.

Cute and close to the beach but we will not stay here again

  • 2 of 5

This place is cute, comes with two dedicated parking spots and is only two blocks from the most quiet beach I have ever visited. However, there are a lot of problems with this rental. The AC units are window units; one in the living room and one in the master bedroom. If you plan to sleep in the second bedroom, be ready for the heat and a terrible smell.

The bathroom is the next issue. The shower is about 3’ by 2’ (WxD), so if you are overweight forget it. The handles extend out so far I had bruises. The shower walls are drywall and the paint is peeling. The floor consists of wood slats and I’m about 50% sure that everytime you shower you flood the laundry room. You also have to shower by camping light- no actual light in the shower.

Another issue is the electrical. There were only two plugs in the master bedroom and everytime I turned on my blow dryer I popped the breaker and would have to go outside to the laundry room to reset it. This rental also has no built in lighting. Everything is lamps or camping lights. The switches don’t work and there are rope lights illuminating the bathroom mirror.

Lastly, and I asked the owner to correct this problem, the walls and ceiling are covered in soot. I think someone previously tried to burn something in the fireplace (fake) and smoked out the rental.

Ok- with all that being said, these are pretty easy fixes or things to overlook if you try hard enough (we stayed for a week). BUT- I would not pay the same amount to stay here that I would at a nice hotel. So do your homework and ask yourself what it is you want. This place is cute, has a kitchen, a fenced in yard (which our two dogs loved), two parking spots and is in a good neighborhood. Its two blocks from the beach (where you can walk your dogs in the sand/water) and a short drive to some good restaurants. It has a full size washer and dryer, huge flat screen tv and the owner is sweet in providing a lot of things (toothpaste, shampoo, soaps, laundry soap, etc).

Owner's Response: Thank you Deanna. We do have window units, but I have just added a new larger one that is really keeping the place COLD! Keep in mind they didn't even have AC when this Historic Little Bungalow was built! We love it and are very proud of what we've created here. We've also added new furniture and more lamps for extra lighting! Come see us again!

Charming, local neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time on our long weekend stay here! We met the neighbors who were lovely and gave us some great recommendations on attractions and dining in the area. The house itself was very rustic, clean and well decorated. We really enjoyed ourselves and hope to visit again soon!

Our Historic little Bungalow is located very close to the beaches. The neighborhood is very family oriented with beautiful homes and side streets for walking, jogging or bike riding. The water here is very popular for surf fishing and very productive for trout, spot, croaker, blues and stripers! The Ocean View Pier is just a mile or so down the road and offers the chance to catch some really big fish - fees apply.

The neighborhood is nice and quiet and so is our unit. It is beautifully decorated and we strive to keep it very clean, well stocked an fresh so that our guests will love it and come back to see us again.
