Saltbrook on the Bay is a semi-unplugged retreat. It's a simple, out-in-the-country - very rural, by-the-seaside old cottage, reminiscent of vacations of a different time. It's perfect for couples or small families who are looking to unwind and relax without distraction of most electronic devices. (There is NO television, NO internet and VERY LIMITED cell reception at the cottage - although free internet is available in nearby town - about 20 minutes away.)
Our weeks run from Saturday to Saturday and we only make very few weeks available for rental during the summer and fall season. We have a minimum stay of one week as we've found that it takes several days to truly unwind and separate oneself from technology that is normally used everyday.
We have worked very hard to keep our little cottage pristine from gadgets and whirs and beeps and hums and take you back to nature where you wake to the sound of the ocean waves and light of the morning sun.
Saltbrook on the Bay is a vintage, seasonal, traditional summer cottage. The first floor has a living room and dining room that seats 4. There is also a front 'sun-room' that holds books and games as well as a game table.
The cottage kitchen is equipped with a full size fridge and electric range. There is a stove-top percolator coffee pot, a teapot, toaster and all cooking utensils, dishes and glassware for 4.
The bathroom is on the first floor and has a tub/shower, hairdryer and washing machine (a clothesline is outside for the freshest of laundry).
Upstairs there are two bedrooms --
The back bedroom has a queen bed with an ocean view..
The front bedroom has two twin beds.
The rocky beach is accessed by a grassy path through a meadow. Swimming and water activity are NOT recommended at our beach. Relaxing, hiking on the rocks for miles and stargazing are highly recommended.
While you are here, make sure you visit the fish market down the road in Parker’s Cove for world-famous scallops or lobster (they will cook them for you). And be sure to visit Annapolis Royal farmer’s market to sample some of the abundant organic produce and local bread and wines, one of the very best farmer's markets in the province.
There are many, many different day trips to make from the cottage home-base. Also, we've had many past guests who rent the cottage for a week as a home base and take overnight trips to Halifax and PEI. But day trips (within an hour or two drive from the cottage) are scenic and abundant with beauty, history and adventure.
Our property is certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a 'Backyard Wildlife Habitat'.
We are also certified by the American Vacation Rental Owners Association (AVROA).
The History of Saltbrook on the Bay:
So... Maria (one of the owners) was procrastinating at work one day (the office had just started getting internet back around 2003) and she landed upon a Nova Scotia real estate website. She was curious about real estate in the area (she had vacationed in Annapolis Royal on a family vacation when she was a teenager) so she called the real estate agent.
Long story short, by the time she had hung up the phone, she had made an offer - sight unseen -- on a tiny cottage on the shore of the Bay of Fundy. Immediately, she packed up her young daughter and headed up to see what she had purchased (well, after telling her husband...."Honey... I kind of bought a house today").
The cottage was falling apart, with about six different patterns of competing wallpaper, pink shag carpet, and a bathroom with a crumbling foundation (chunks of the ceiling would fall on your head while showering). But the setting was just spectacular. Saltbrook has been a labor of love for the past 15 years or so. Little by little, each room has been redone (and some redone again). The foundation is new, the wallpaper is stripped (although a piece salvaged from one room has been framed), the pink shag carpet removed to reveal hardwood flooring.
It has truly become the family's "Happy Place".
