About Alan Suen
I was born and raised in New York City, attended college at Yale, and currently live in New York with my wife and our son. Aside from annual unplanned trips to Disney World and Las Vegas, we've visited Alaska, Seattle, Vancouver, Cancun, Miami, and Cabo San Lucas. We've also road tripped on both the West Coast from San Francisco to LA to Las Vegas and on the East Coast from New York down to Florida. I'm a serial entrepreneur who loves to explore and try new things. I'm into fitness and nutrition, skiing, snowboarding, snorkeling, swimming, hiking, boating; the list is endless. But, above all, I love to spend time with my family.
Alan Suen purchased this House in 2017
Why Alan Suen chose The Heights
My first job was in Jersey City, just a 5 minute metro ride from New York's World Trade Center. There, I realized for the first time that Jersey City and other neighboring cities in New Jersey along the Hudson River had the most spectacular waterfront views of Manhattan and New York City. Given New York City's general outlawing of vacation rental properties, I chose to invest in Jersey City as it is the closest a vacation home can be located to New York City and has an entire city culture of its own with skyscrapers rivaling those in Manhattan as well as neighborhoods strewn with townhouses, brownstones, and Victorian architecture.
What makes this House unique
The home was built in 1900 on a solid stone foundation supported by beams running the entire length of the home, reminiscent of some of the classic townhouses in Brooklyn and Manhattan in New York City. The strength and durability of such construction no longer exists in today's newly constructed homes. It has an adorable enclosed porch area and neighbors who are more friendly than what I was used to in New York City. Although I've renovated the property to bring it up to date with contemporary style, if I had to sum up the home in one word, charming seems like the perfect description. Oh, and the place is sun-drenched in front during the day and has the most spectacular sunset view in the back.

Alan gave very good instructions on how to get around. Very helpful! He stayed in touch. Making sure all was well. Parking was a bit tough, but it looked to be that way everywhere.
Great location, easy accessibility to city and accommodating to our group of 10
This was great! Alan was an excellent host and very helpful. His place accommodated our group, tight squeeze in kitchen and one bathroom is very small, but it worked! Everything was mostly clean and well prepared for us. We did all agree that the showers could be cleaner and since we didn’t wear shoes in the House per request we all noticed the floor felt gritty. Other than that we had a great stay and would definitely stay here again! Thanks Alan!
Great place. Very comfy and was great for our group.
Great location really close to the area we needed only took us about 25 mins (driving) to get to Times Square. The beds are SUPER comfortable there is street parking and we got to experience a little of Jersey by visiting some of the local shops and bakeries as well as The awesome city of New york . Our host was very informative and that made our stay a lot easier overall I would definitely stay again.
Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to host you.
The house had plenty of sleeping space & was very clean and well kept!!!
The only issue that we had with the actual property itself was that it was really warm in the house and we did not how to control the temperature because we could not find a thermometer!!! Let the landlord know & he was going to have it taken care of by having the pipes drained .
Unfortunately, It did take us a little longer than we had anticipated to get ourselves into the city !! We did have a relatively large group though and taking Uber can get a little expensive If you need more than one vehicle.
We ended up taking a bus to the Path station but then had to take a Subway into the city !!
Other than that, we felt very safe in the neighborhood and had no other issues
The heating issue has been taken care of. My plumber drained all the radiators and the boiler, replaced valves, etc, so it is working like new again. Regarding the commute, taking to the bus South to the PATH to go back North to get to Times Square takes a lot longer than the travel directions I sent you, which was to simply take the bus or commuter van North straight to Times Square. My apologies this became an overlooked detail that lengthened your commute.
There is frequent bus service operated by the city and by private companies that takes you to and from Times Square and Port Authority bus terminal in 15-25 minutes. During the day, they run as frequently as every 3-5 minutes. They run until 12:40AM. The 24/7 PATH train is a 5 minute uber away and takes you to downtown Manhattan in 10 minutes. Newark Liberty International Airport is only 20 minutes away via taxi or Uber / Lyft / Juno rideshare. If you've never used these services, I can send you a link for a discount before you arrive. There's street parking in this very safe neighborhood but make sure you read the street signs for parking restrictions.
