Overview

About the property

Your secluded oceanfront paradise....

Welcome to Bear Beach Maine!

If you are looking for a cozy yet spacious and extremely well-appointed home nestled peacefully in the woods and directly on a secluded, sandy beach this is your place!

From the moment you walk through the door you will feel warmly greeted by this log home designed to resemble an early American lodge. The open concept great room with its cathedral ceiling, large field-stone fireplace and comfy furnishings are equally favorable for both larger gatherings and intimate parties of two. The sunlight streams through the expansive windows in the afternoon. Enjoy a fire, a glass of wine or hot chocolate and a good book or movie on the Blu-ray/DVD player for a perfect day of relaxation.

There are two dining areas within the open concept, each with expandable leaves allowing plenty of room for meal time guests or family game nights. The hutch/book case contains enough games and puzzles to make even a rainy or snowy day enjoyable. Or head to the basement for a game of Foosball or ping pong (Some call it beer pong). A wooden folding table next to the hutch can be set up as a "working vacation" desk...Sometimes its needed. We do have free wifi!

In the kitchen you will find nearly everything imaginable to make gourmet meals or heat up a frozen dinner. From spices to a lobster pot, cast iron cookware, electric griddle, both Keurig and regular coffee makers, microwave, toaster, crock pot, wine cooler with lots of beverage glasses! If something is missing, you probably just have not found it yet.

Sleep soundly in the master queen bed to the sound of the ocean or to a crackling fire in the master fireplace. But first, unwind in the warmth of the claw foot soaking tub in the connecting bathroom.

On the same level, in the other wing of the house, are two bedrooms and the second full bathroom. Both have queen beds, one also has an ocean view with sliding doors to the covered oceanfront deck where you can sip your morning coffee while listening to the sounds of sea birds and lobster boats.

The spacious loft with four twin beds overlooks the great room and has stunning views of the ocean and also the back yard.

Arguably, the most fun part of the house is not even IN the house. The Bare Den is located in the back yard and houses the sauna with cool-down room (open all year) and also the out-door shower (open seasonally). Nothing is as refreshing as taking a warm shower in the open air while watching the ocean and an occasional bald eagle flying overhead. Its also great for rinsing off sandy feet or pets! And at the end of a day, relaxing every muscle in the heat of the sauna and cooling down with an icy beverage is simply magical.

Bear Beach Maine is located on Holmes Bay in the town of Cutler. Because the house faces West on the bay, it enjoys the most gorgeous sunsets over the ocean. Relax on the front deck with a glass of wine, chilled cocktail or cup of coffee and its hard not to reflect on the many blessings of the day as the sun falls below the horizon.

Head down the staircase in front of the house to the sandy beach. Enjoy long walks along the varying shoreline at lower tide, or have kayaks delivered to the house from Sunrise Canoe and Kayak to view the coast from a whole different perspective. Pack a picnic lunch and kayak over to Hog Island a 15-20 minute paddle from the front of the house. A short hike around the island will have you searching for the Indian rock carvings (petroglyphs) which were pecked into ledges hundreds of years ago by the Algonquin Indians. These unique carvings are located on the southwest side of the island and are engraved into the latent shale stone.

If you do find the need to leave the house (like to get lobsters) head just a few miles out to Little River Lobster in the town of Cutler and watch your dinner come straight from the ocean to your table! At the end of our road, stop by A to Z Variety and pick up some freshly-harvested clams right from Holmes Bay! Add to that an amazing selection of fine wine and beer from all over the world (and local varieties) at the French Cellar in Machias, and you will have a meal to remember!

Other fun suggestions:

Cutler Harbor is considered one of the prettiest little harbors in Maine. And there you will find The Bold Coast Charter Company where Captain Andy Patterson can take you to Machias Seal Island to view the largest puffin colony along the coast of Maine. His tours book up very fast, so book early!

A few miles further toward the town of Milbridge, Robertson Sea Tours offers a number of unique and very educational tours including a whale-watching tour. Captain Robertson was a teacher who followed his dream of owning a tour company and becoming a commercial fisherman. He knows how to impart his knowledge and love of the ocean area to others!

Bear Beach Maine is also only a few minutes drive from two of the most spectacular ocean-side hiking trails on the east coast, the Western Head Trail (located on the west side of Cutler harbor) and the Bold Coast Trail (located just to east of Cutler harbor). Both of these hikes expose area guests to some of Maine's most rugged and bold crashing-surf shorelines east of Acadia.

Guests can also visit scenic Lubec where West Quoddy Head light house is located and its wonderful coastal hiking trail. Don't forget to stop by Monica's Chocolates for a decadent selection of hand-made Peruvian chocolates (She gives free samples!) Just across the bridge from Lubec is Canada's Campobello Island and the location of President Theodore and Eleanor Roosevelt's summer home. This is probably the best free tour you will ever take especially if you are able to score tickets to the morning seating of "Tea With Eleanor"...Keep in mind that Campabello Island is in the Atlantic time zone when making plans.

Both Lubec and Campobello Island are only 30 minutes from Bear Beach Maine. Also, New Brunswick, Canada is only 1 hour and 15 minutes away, and Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are just 2 hours from the house. These destinations are easy day trips from the property.

The house is 2 hours from Bangor International Airport, 5 hours from the Portland Jetport, 7 hours from Boston and 11 hours from New York City.

Bear Beach Maine is available all year. There is a four-night minimum stay. The months of mid June through mid October are rented on a weekly basis only with Saturday as the "change over" day.

Both a 50% deposit and a signed rental agreement are required before your reservation is confirmed.

The balance of rental fees and a $500 refundable security/damage deposit is due 30 days prior to your arrival.

Your well-behaved dogs are welcome with no additional pet fee (We trust that that pet parents are responsible and will remove waste from the yard before departure...Should additional cleaning be required, it will be deducted from the security deposit)

Cats are not permitted due to severe allergies.

Smoking is not allowed in the house or Bare Den

Rates subject to change anytime until booking & deposit

Ask about monthly rentals

While our cancellation policy is 100% refund with more than 60 days notice from arrival day, the service fee to VRBO/Homeaway is non refundable.

We look forward to sharing our little piece of coastal heaven with you!

About Sue Biewer

My husband and I have lived in Michigan for all of our married life where we have raised three beautiful and kind children, recently adding the blessing of our totally-awesome grandson! While we all currently live in close proximity to each other here, we continue to meet up in Cutler as often as our busy schedules allow to escape the hustle and bustle of every-day life. Life and time go by so quickly; in Cutler we gather snap shots in an effort to make time stand still and life to be relived long after we are gone...

Sue Biewer purchased this house in 2005

Why Sue Biewer chose Cutler

My father's job took us to many places during the first 13 years of my life. We lived in Alabama, Indiana, Illinois, Maine and three different moves to Michigan. Though we lived in Maine for less than two years, it stood out as our favorite place. Any mention of Maine would always bring a smile to my parents' faces as they reminisced about the only place we ever lived where they never felt the need to "get away" for a vacation. After their passing my husband and I were blessed enough to be able to purchase this amazing property and build our dream log home where we continue to make memories with our ever-growing family. It is my greatest joy to be able to share my love of Maine with my family and with others; it is my passion!

Bear Beach Maine is dedicated to my parents and to all the memories we shared together in Maine. Without them surely I would have never known such a wonderful place...a little bit of "heaven on earth". I love you, Mom and Dad...

What makes this house unique

My husband, Jim, always wanted a log cabin in the woods. My dream was to have a tangible connection to Maine through a home on the ocean. This place offers both and so much more. It is close enough to shopping and fun sights while feeling like a million miles away at the same time. It seems that no matter how stressful our lives are, when we are in Cutler sitting on the beach and watching the sunset over the ocean, life is good. We feel God there, and we continue to be so grateful that He allows us this small glimpse of paradise.

My wish for you, and for all who come here, is that you will find peace and feel loved. This house was built with lots of all. Have the best vacation ever!

Best place for a relaxing enjoyable vacation with all the conveniences of home!

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough good things about this wonderful home. Every single convenience was provided for us. The home was very clean and neat. Bedrooms were beautiful and close to bathrooms. Kitchen was well stocked with every appliance and tools necessary to cook everything from lobster to fresh wild blueberry pie! Toys, games, and supplies for children were all provided. Extra blankets, pillows, linens, towels were terrific. Beach was amazing and so close to the door! We loved kayaking over to hog island and finding lots of shells and rocks for our collections. Kite flying at the beach was also a hit. Sauna and outdoor shower and fire ring were the added bonus. We also loved the binoculars, books about Maine and bird/plant ID,, and flyers from various Maine attractions all conveniently located for us. Board games, ping pong, air hockey, and foozball were an added bonus. Lobster pot, crackers, lobster butter warmers/holders, and fresh lobster just down the road made the trip that much better! Sitting on the deck every morning with hot coffee looking out at that wonderful God-created view will never be forgotten! This is just an amazingly beautiful home and setting...so private and relaxing yet close to Machias to shop or got out if needed. Sunsets at this place are amazingly beautiful and seeing the lobster boats were also a treat. Eagles and ospreys were frequently seen too! We even got to see a moose and a family of ospreys while driving to Machias one morning! Jasper Beach and Rogue Bluffs (with wild blueberries and red raspberries) were terrific and so was the lighthouse near Lubec/East Quoddy with some wonderful trails overlooking the islands and bogs with carnivorous plants. I could go on and on about the many sensational things about the area and the house, but just want you to know it was the best memory making place I have ever been to in my life!

Fantastic Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our week at Bear Beach couldn't have been better. We enjoyed swimming, walks on the beach, ping pong in the basement and relaxing in the sauna. We went on a lovely hike at Western Head Trail (not far at all from Bear Beach), bought lobsters from Little River Lobster, went shopping at the Dollar Store, walked down to the convenience store for pizza and beer. We drove into Machias to get wine and cheese from The French Cellar and had a lovely night on the deck. The house had everything we needed. Having our own private beach was amazing. Sue and Jim were very quick to respond to any questions we had. This is a perfect spot for a family of all ages. My children (ages 6, 10, 13, 18 and 21) all had a fabulous time. We were able to make great memories, go on little adventures and relax when we needed to!!

Great house, beautiful location, can't wait to go back

  • 5 of 5

Bear Beach is a great property surrounded by woods and with a staircase to the bay. As a family who loves to cook, we particularly liked the open kitchen, where we could socialize while making dinner. The sauna was a wonderful way to relax after a long coastal hike. Kids loved playing in the bay. Really great location with a 15 min drive to a coastal hike in Cutler and 25-40 min drives to other hikes further north.

Great location-very comfortable accomodations-excellent customer service

  • 5 of 5

We rented Bear Beach for a week May 2018 for a University Machias Graduation with family 3.5 days and friends to explore the area 3.5 days.

Location on ocean with sunset views fantastic! All aspects of house made for a very comfortable stay for 8 adults. Outdoor back yard space great for lawn games. Sauna worked great! Machias/Cutler/Lubec has wonderful maintained hiking trails through mature green mossy forests opening to breath taking ocean views! There is a bike trail that is not paved but has wonderful scenery and brings you to a very good restaurant/brewery in Machais. Sue was ideal to work with providing information about the area and tips to make our stay in their home more enjoyable!

Perfect destination!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and our little precious bully Ali, I have busy lives and this was just the most perfect place we could have chosen. Nestled away in remote Maine, we had the beautiful beach view and natural beauty.

Sue was just such a wonderful host. Always in touch and making sure we had exactly what we needed. Sue made some wonderful suggestions such as driving through the lovely village of Cutler, which we enjoy so very much. We also enjoyed the local wine shop where we chatted with the owner who suggested a lovely local blueberry wine which we enjoyed very much with some local cheese we purchased there as well. We stopped in some of the shops in downtown Machias where everyone was just so friendly. The Bluebird Diner had the best onion rings I’ve every had, and I live in the land of Diners!

The home they share is just so beautiful and comfortable. We took advantage of the lovely fireplace as well as the sauna! What a treat! During low tide we took such nice strolls on the beach just listening to the sound of beauty.

One note, Sue does let you know it is a dirt road to the house so after lots of snow or rain, you know what comes next...lots of mud!! Good thing I bought a pair of boots I could just throw out.. :)

Again, if you’re looking for a relaxing, beautiful get-a-way for piece and quite and just need to reconnect with loved ones...this is the perfect place.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the very-kind words and wonderful review, Aixa! So happy to hear that you and your husband along with Ali had a great time despite the sad demise of your boots! (Sorry!) Fortunately, the mud does not last forever, but it can be rather messy while its there. The friendliness of the people together with the incredibly-stunning natural beauty are two of the things that most made me fall in love with this part of Maine. It can be difficult to find such a peaceful, unspoiled place in today's busy world. You and your family are absolutely welcome back anytime... perhaps in kayak/sand season!
